Russia and Ukraine on track for 2015 Joint Championship

950

The organising committee of the proposed Joint Russian and Ukrainian championship have confirmed that the Russian Premier League have voted in favour of the proposal.  The matter will now go to the Russian Association and the corresponding authorities in Ukraine.

Valery Gazzaev, president of Russian club, Alania Vladikavkaz, told reporters, “Innovation is never easy, even the World Cup and European Championships had doubters in the game.  The English, who founded the game, were sceptical about such championships.

“We have had the same doubts about our project but in football, a policy of integration is now necessary.  Look at the European Championship in 2020, which will be held across 13 countries.

“Given the economic crisis in Europe few territories can afford to maintain a competitive team.  If we draw a combined championship with Russia and Ukraine we will improve entertainment, as well as football and financial stability.

“Half of Russian clubs are unprofitable (a considerably lower portion than UK clubs), 70% are subsidised by governmental budgets, this is wrong.  A Joint League will enable teams to earn money to pay their own way.

“We want to create a strong league which will compete with the best in Europe.

“The plan is to hold the first joint championship in 2015-16.  Teams will compete in European competitions under their national flags.  The national quotas for participation in the tournament will remain the same, so if ranking does not change, Russia and Ukraine will be represented in the Champions League by six teams.

“Our proposal is fully consistent with Uefa strategy.  Uefa understand that, under the current league structures, Financial Fair Plan will weaken our clubs.  A combined championship gives us a solution.

“Part of the budget for the new league will come from the sale of media rights.  The remaining amount will be generated from sponsors.  It’s not just about Gazprom, other major Russian, Ukrainian and international companies will be involved (no mention of Flamingo Land yet).”

Make no mistake, this project’s viability is underwritten by political and financial muscle.  Gazprom are a huge player in world energy markets, as well as European football sponsorship, while politicians in Moscow and Kiev see football as a ‘political football’.

They have the money and backers to ensure this slips through Uefa, creating an important blueprint in the process.  Note specifically that Champions League spots will be retained by each nation, a hugely important point for integration elsewhere.

Have to agree – fan unity seems to be particularly difficult to achieve. Other Clubs fans seem to rally in a unified manner – Jambos, Pars, even dare I say it, rasellick back in the 90’s.

Not sure whether this is due to the Scots Presbyterian mind-set in relation to distrusting heirarchies & dictatorships but now is surely the time to finally unite and let the Board know that we are unwilling to put up with any more of this never-ending soap opera.

I can’t help but think the continuing cycle of leaks, statements and spinning are providing convenient smokescreens to distract the fans whilst the current custodians of our Club continue with their “activities” relatively unfettered. We surely cannot allow the Club to sleep walk into another insolvency crisis – that would be criminal.

John Paul Young (aka Love is in the Air) does indeed a Celtic connections. Firstly he is my mums cousin. His sister is researching the family tree and found that her (and therefore his and my mum) great grandparents were both subscribers to the founding of Celtic. Their great grand mother is listed in the 20s section here http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/Names+of+Subscribers (the only women)

I’m told that there is a picture at Celtic Park of these initial high contributing subscribers and that it wasn’t the done thing for women to be donating in those times so the great grand father is in the picture (though he did subscribe too).

She is looking for a copy of this photo. Does anyone know where it is in Celtic Park and how I would get a copy. Can I just ask to be let in and take a photo of it (notwithstanding the treatment of Morrisey)

    Ticket Fiascos

    Posted On 28 Sep, 2013 – By lostbhoys – With 0 Comments

Samaras celebrates at Rugby ParkIt almost seems like Celtic are going out of their way to annoy us this week. Tuesday saw another poor attitude defeat in a cup match – I’m still having nightmares about cleared corners there were so many that went unattacked, or at best sclaffed wide. Then on Thursday, Celtic announced a partnership with Stubhub which would not only be another way for the club to sell tickets but could potentially also be used by people who had bought a ticket but now wanted to sell it on.

Someone at our club isn’t looking at the fine details.

Stubhub are already in bed with plenty of English teams, but just a couple of days ago it was announced that Tottenham Hotspur fans were furious that their club was involved with what they perceive to be legalised ticket touting.

As far as I can see, they’re absolutely spot on. Yes, you can try selling a ticket at face value on their web site. But once they take their cut you’d actually be losing money for doing so. Basically if you use this facility then to get your money back you need to rip off whoever you are selling to. And that’s assuming you’re honest to start with. We already have problems with ticket touts as was evident for the big Champions League games last season, so potentially this news will only encourage them to make money out of selling on tickets for Celtic games through a recognised partner of the club.

Not only that, but the fact the club suddenly found some more tickets for the Barcelona match to give to Stubhub to sell is pretty disconcerting as well. What about all those supporters who queued up outside the ticket office just a couple of weeks ago? What about all the stories of how the three match packages were sold out? When Celtic said we had sold out what they actually meant was sold out from the ones allocated directly to the supporters as three match packages and not those you’re keeping back for your new partners. Or maybe they meant “sold out” in another sense entirely. Whatever the story, the Stubhub tickets quickly sold, which sadly proves there’s a market for them.

I should point out that you can still get individual tickets directly from the club, which makes it even stranger that Stubhub would be brought in at this stage. The club claim that this is to open up further markets and tickets won’t be sold at above face value prices. The club have also said that only they will sell tickets through them and not fans, which I’d suggest defeats the purpose of Stubhub being involved unless that’s planned for the future. I’m also not sure what markets Stubhub reach that Ticketmaster – whom we currently use for online ticket sales – don’t already. Oh yes, and for all the club won’t charge any more than face value for the tickets, buyers through Stubhub face a 15% markup by the distributor. Thanks for that Celtic. Not that Ticketmaster aren’t bad enough with their £1.50 per ticket “internet charge” right enough.

Regardless, Stubhub is an appalling web site from which we should be keeping our distance. If the long term goal is to have some kind of ticket exchange then other alternatives exist that won’t rip off Celtic supporters. Mind you, with the recent change from Thomas Cook – who ripped us off – to Celtic Travel which is actually just Thomson – who also rip us off – it’s clear to see that money making schemes are still more important than getting the best deal for the supporters. Well I suppose they need to recoup that £100 one-off season ticket discount from us somehow.

Of course, this isn’t the only ticket fiasco we’ve encountered this week. Kilmarnock decided pretty much out of the blue that they were going to offer Celtic supporters the chance to buy tickets for this weekend’s match at £20, which would also entitle them to up to two child tickets for free. Which sounds absolutely brilliant until you consider that they didn’t tell Celtic about the £20 part initially and so our club excitedly informed supporters about the wonderful kids offer. Which certainly hacked off all of those supporters who had already purchased a ticket for the game at the original £26 price.

Kilmarnock are desperate. They know the only time they get a decent crowd is when Celtic turn up. They usually give us two stands behind the goals. Last year we only filled one of them and the other was lined with flags. This year it sounds like even less will be going. All of this while the Kilmarnock fans become increasingly hacked off at owner Michael Johnston’s attitude towards them, something which to an outsider like me appeared to start the minute he abstained from a certain Newco vote while everyone else voted no. You’ll also note that they’re not getting a discount on the Celtic game at all. Who on earth rips off their own fans?

    Oh wait, the StubHub thing.

Kilmarnock are heading for a crisis, that’s pretty clear. The fans revolt is growing and is bound to reach the point where they take more action in an effort to try and force Johnston out. How far they need to go to do that, and how far it will push Kilmarnock to financial oblivion, remains to be seen. Given his actions so far I can’t help but think Johnston is the kind of man who would see the club go to the wall without a care in the world unless he gets his over-inflated valuation from a sale. Given they are around £7 million in debt it’s going to be difficult to see who would pay it.

But before they get to that point, we have a game to play.

We only went to Rugby Park once last season – another factor in their financial troubles no doubt – but that game was one of the best Celtic played last season. Celtic dominated from start to finish, scored some fantastic goals, and won the game 3-1. Those goals came from Scott Brown, Joe Ledley and Georgios Samaras – the latter being the end product of a move that involved passes between all ten outfield players – before a very late consolation from Cillian Sheridan.

Of course, Sheridan had scored in Kilmarnock’s first win at Celtic Park for 57 years earlier in the season, with Liam Kelly also on the scoresheet from the penalty spot in the 2-0 win. Kilmarnock’s other visit to Celtic Park was a 4-1 win for Celtic, although once more Sheridan was on the scoresheet. That goal cancelled out Joe Ledley’s opener, but a goal from Anthony Stokes in between two from Adam Matthews ensured the victory. The good news is Sheridan now plays in Greece for APOEL.

Kilmarnock are struggling pretty badly at the moment. No wins from seven matches in the league, and only three draws in that run against St Johnstone, St Mirren and Partick Thistle. Defeat to Hamilton Juco in the League Cup wasn’t great either but we can’t really criticise anyone for that. After all, Hamilton are top of the Championship, not second bottom. In the eight games, Kilmarnock have scored just six goals. Three of those have come from Kris Boyd who has only ever scored once in his entire career against Celtic, while two of the other three goals have come from Barry Nicholson. So clearly it’s the old heads who are doing the business for Kilmarnock. The other goal? A Stephen McManus own goal in a defeat to Motherwell.

After being dumped out of the League Cup, Celtic need to bounce back with a good performance against Kilmarnock. The players need it, the fans need it. That’s without even considering what comes next. I don’t even want to think about going into that game off the back of two poor domestic performances.

  27. Good Morning All, I’m sitting here dressed up in red and white this morning (just as well we are not playing the sheepies today). Heading off to Dublin at 10.30, plan to watch the Celtic game in Quinns Pub with the Naomh Padraig CSC and after its onwards to the hallowed ground of Croke Park for the All Ireland Hurling Final to support my beloved County. A Cork/Celtic double would do nicely but win or lose, tomorrow I will still be a Cork Celt.
