Scotland, consolable in defeat

473

I want Scotland to win at pretty much anything.  For me (fourth generation), this is my home and my country.  I also want Celtic players to be successful.  But the engagement with tonight’s qualifier against Serbia is not there.  If I’m really honest, my biggest wish is for Callum McGregor to have a midweek off.

Memories of the 1998 World Cup do not help.  Celtic contributed more players to that tournament than any other club in world football.  We paid a price the following season as exhaustion took its toll.  Do I really want Celtic players on international duty in throughout the summer, before another tortuous European qualification campaign?  Do you?  No need to pull that plaster off yet.

My country’s position on the international stage has always been viewed through pragmatism.  Will it hurt the poor, or the soon-to-be-poor (hmmm)?  Will it hurt what I really care about, like Celtic?

So good luck to them tonight, but if we are beaten by the better team, I will be consolable.

  1. Good morning, friends and an extra Big Happy Happy Friday from a dry but threatening looking East Kilbride.

I’m still on an emotional high after the conclusion of last night’s game. Watching Ryan’s interview was so incredible. Enjoy your day, everyone!

People will not be allowed to drink alcohol on trains or at stations in Scotland from Monday, ScotRail has announced.

to link celtic to scotlands recent record..

i have been hyper critical of celtics (and some of the fans) obsession with signing every semi decent scottish player going and having a team with mostly scottish players in it up against even semi-decent european opposition during an era when the international team was pish

it has failed us so many times recently

so whereas there has definitely been an improvement in the international team – especially in its hardtobeatabilityness – i still wouldnt be rushing in to sign everyone of those squad members that we can

  6. Considering the way that we as a club and fans have been treated by the sfa over the years, I am supprised at the outpouring of congratulations for the national team. But everyone to their own.

Only one team for me .

I can’t see many ‘law abiding citizens’ being adversley affected. It’s a sensible and rational decision. I’m surprised that its taken so long for it to be introduced.

Who, other than jakies( however outwardly respectable they appear), feels the need to drink alcohol in an enclosed environment in close proximity to others in the midst of a pandemic where a primary transmission route is airborne transmission by aerosol?

  8. Watching the news this morning and the final missed penalty from Serbia and I noticed this for the first time, can anyone tell me why the Scotland top has red in it?

  9. I asked the same question months ago. Nobody knew the answer, other than it makes the strip a bit more hun like

  10. JINKYREDSTAR on 12TH NOVEMBER 2020 11:36 PM

And BBC Scotland field more Rangers players than Scotland did

    How sad

JINKY, was reading back over last night’s comments and saw that one – made me smile so it did! And …. so true!

Saw also your reference to the ‘Joe Jordan’ game at Hampdump. That was the night when, when Joe scored, the whole of the North Enclosure fell/ran forward about 12/15 feet and lo and behold, there at our feet was the remnants of a massive cairry oot. Well, apart from wondering why there was any drink left at that time in the game, what were poor students supposed to do? And so on the return journey up the terrace we were armed with a few cans each, to celebrate the forthcoming qualification for the World Cuppie.

  11. Just reading back and some pretty harsh criticisms of Clarke. Yes, the subs stopped the flow of Scotland’s game but stick or twist is never an easy decision and if £20m striker McBurnie had run half as much as the striker he replaced, they might not have gone to penalties.

Eleven games unbeaten, knocking out Serbia in Belgrade – who would’ve seen that 18 months ago? They’re unspectacular and not a great watch but credit where it’s due. Clarke has turned them into a stuffy and competitive outfit.

  12. glendalystonsils on

    GEEBEE1978

……or , if Griff had come on instead of the utterly useless McBurnie , the game might not even have gone to extra time .

  13. GLENDALYSTONSILS on 13TH NOVEMBER 2020 11:11 AM

I agree and hindsight is the perfect science. I didn’t foresee McBurnie having the stinker he did and obviously, neither did Clarke.

  14. GB- Clarke got it spot on for 82 minutes, his subs made the team lose balance, Dykes was spent right enough, but McGinn and Christie could have played on for 8 minutes……Clarke would have been crucified if Scotland had lost,he put subs on for a 90 minute game, and never factored in extra time, but great scenes from the dressing room and hotel after.HH

  15. !!BADA BING!! on 13TH NOVEMBER 2020 11:16 AM

Honestly mate, I’m not disagreeing and I’m sure Clarke himself will reflect on what he should’ve done. But he did get them to this position in the first place and they played some decent stuff for 70-odd minutes.

You’re right….fine margins in football. Ferguson’s line-up against Bayern was lopsided and they were outplayed for much of the game – two late goals and the rest is history.

Clarke would’ve been hammered had they lost and some of the criticism would’ve been fair. But they didn’t and again, fine margins. Just think a bit of credit is due to a manager who has done a fine job, that’s all.

  16. The biggest surprises to me last night was the performances of a few players,no one has really rated.Big Dykes was immense leading the line.An absolute nightmare for Serbia, all night.Big Gallacher was excellent at CH,and not for the 1st time.I know the usual groans will go up,but if we lose out on this boy,we should chuck it.The levels he has stepped up to in this campaign, have been a real eye opener. If we don’t,someone else will.January would be the ideal time.

A fantastic result, and whats more, its made around 70% of the Hun support sick as pigs.Thats a double dunt for me.

  17. Good news – Well done to Scotland and all those on here who had a great night celebrating in such tough times.

Bad news (for us) – Another 120 minutes for Callum McGregor on top of an overused season to date.

  19. There’s no doubt Clarke is a good manager but he would have been heavily criticised had Serbia won. Football is a fickle game as we know. The Celtic boys (past, present and fans) were excellent.

First time I’ve really watched Dykes and think he’d have been a decent buy for us. Brilliant in the air. The boy Gallagher was very good also. Scotland were the best team throuout the normal time and were very organised, kept and passed the ball well. Hopefully, our guys will get a rest and also a lift from this.

  20. Hello again all you young rebels.

Just a wee post before you all go to bed, wait!!!! it’s me that’s going to

    bed, feck.

Right,… got talking to an auld Tim today, even older than me or CQN’s

    finest the incomparable OLDTIM.

Reminiscing, and a game Celtic went abroad and big Jock insisted they

take all their own food, and cook it on site sort of, embody remember

    what game? the score?

Was it against a Spanish club? as the dreaded lergy usually struck every

U.K visitor who went on holiday.

The point is big Jock was always thinking ahead.

  21. On the vaccine debate.Personally I will trample over people to get it.Watching the Virus expert on Question Time last night was a real eye opener for me.On the question of”Its too quick”,he explained how far this century, science has come,in developing vaccines.43,000 tested around the world, and fantastic results.

On the question of “Side effects”,he explained, there may be,for some, but if you looked at the side effects, which can be caused by taking,Paracetamol, you would never take one.All drugs have a massive list of side effects, which do not harm the vast majority.

I am ignoring the “Tinfoil heads”and joining the first queue for the vaccine I see.
