Scott Allan wraps the green flag round himself

419

Scott Allan was whisked away from Dundee United as a 19-year-old with only four starts under his belt. At the time there was a great deal of annoyance that a promising Scottish talent was lost to our game almost before he started.

West Brom harvested him, but never gave him a game. He went on loan to Portsmouth (15 starts), MK Dons (2 starts) and Birmingham (another 2 starts), before transferring to Hibernian last summer. Performances for Hibs made him a standout for those who follow lower league football; Player of the Year material.

The most striking part of this deal is the cost, a reported £275k, plus Dylan McGeough, who Hibs had on loan last season and who was unlikely to ever force himself into contention at Celtic. It’s cheap. A cheap signing for Celtic, a cheap player for Hibs to sell. Gone are the days of £4m midfield players moving from Easter Road to Celtic. The price was determined by the competition (there is only one team in Scotland who can put anything like that kind of money down on a player. HP deals have limited appeal).

What he is to Ronny Deila, is a canvas.   Scott will go through the most intense few months of his career, starting Monday morning. He will get his opportunity to show what he can do. Every conceivable performance metric will be measured. And the measurements will improve.

Can’t wait to see him in a Celtic shirt, I’ve heard so much about how good he is for months……..

Welcome to Celtic, Scott.

  1. The feel good factor is tangible on the blog, however thoughts are starting to turn to match. A good performance and critically 3 points are essential to keep the party going till Malmo time.

This time last year, when RD laid out his football philosophy, I reckoned that Four first teasers’ jackets were on a shakey nail.

Sammi, Stokes, Mulgrew and Commons were those lads.

Of the four, Sammi has gone, Anthony is on the way, either out the door or out the team. Charlie is a squad player and Kris is still hanging in there, after admitting that he had to up his game to get his new contract.

This time next year we will probably be without VvD, and Bitton and perhaps, Johansen, therefore we need to be preparing now for that.

Henderson on loan is part of that ; so, too, will possibly be the morphing of Allan into the Commons role, over the course of next season.

The club is in a good place, from top to bottom and if any of us can’t appreciate that, then……..

  4. Lurgan, congratulations. Enjoy all those doubles.

Leftclicktim enjoy every minute of this great day for the wee mhan and you. We have all enjoyed your build up to this precious moment.

Anyone have anything to report of the smsm take on our new signing. I stopped reading those rags over three years ago and have saved a fortune but also been able to keep calm each morning without having to read their sycophantic nonsense.

  5. Corkcelt, Forrest signed extension at same time as Mathews and am sure i remember same length, may be wrong but think this is last year of contract for Forrest!!!

mulgrew has done well for Celtic over the years but his first team wage does not reflect his squad status (unless he takes a drop in wages i don’t see the benefit) we could invest that money better elsewhere!!!

effa has now been poor for best part of 2 years, his best position being a defensive right back, where we are arguably very string already (he has age and versatility on his side)

fisher is a decent player, but with lustig, effa and now jenko, you have to wonder where he fits long team?? How many right backs do we need!!!

    mcgergor not for me

stones will be sold if someone comes in

    dirk is a complete disappointment

feel a little for, Stefan s, but think he would jump at chance to leave and we would jump at chance to sell!!!

“I’ve seen him many times for Hibs admittedly mostly on TV. He plays as the main man in midfield a strutting, probing darting runs behind the strikers, he’s built like a whippet and hurdles tackles with grace, his forte is neat diagonal forward passes, but if there is space he’s got a decent shot on his right peg.”

At least He could do all of this last week before Celtic were mentioned.

The key for me is that he’s right sided unlike KC or SJ, could add a new dimension playing in a similar role.

  7. So we wake up this morning and a pretty average player from the last few weeks is now something of a prospect

The green flag that now adorns Scott Allan’s shoulders is nothing more than a flag of convenience

Mr Delia came here heralded as being the developer of young talent. Well relegating your young and upcoming talent to a league where the majority of participants would struggle to make a Celtic 3rd 11 for me is a board playing at oneupmanship rather than giving their manager the opportunity to develop the young talent at his disposal. No doubt Mr Delia will toe the party line,as did the manager before him, and be led by his masters rather than being a leader and his own man

As it is the Celtic board in this instance have probably done the Huns a financial favour by signing a player they could neither afford to buy or renumerate without suffering financial hardship.

Stokes Ciftci and Scepovic would have been a better alternative package offered.

For me Allan will just end up being another Dylan McGeouch

  8. thomthethim

p.s. In the same games I saw, Dylan McGeouch played too, he didn’t impress whereas Allan did, and not a surprise that he was player of the year, in the division.

Is this the best Scotland can do? Mind you, I suppose it mirrors everything else we do, except for whisky and salmon – Light-weight and Fifth-rate.

  12. Reasonable analysis Steph. Don’t agree with you entirely but that’s OK. In fairness you can’t say get rid of Efe and then count him as a right back and say we have enough of them so lets get rid of Fisher. You are getting rid of two right backs and you must take into account that Lustig is not 100% and at best needs to be nursed through a season.

  18. I knew our latest signing was a done deal a few days ago.

Ronny said in an interview that he was keen to sign more Scotts.

  19. Make no mistake about it Bhoys the Hibees are over the moon with McGeouch. He was very highly rated by Hibs supporters. Allan had to leave they had lost faith in him. Henderson is a bonus for them. The Bhoy will be a big plus for them and we will reap the benefits. Once players hit 18 they have to start games. Hopefully Henderson will do that. Rather than buy your GMS, Armstrongs, Allan’s we need to loan our own youngsters out until they are ready. Ronny and JC know this is the way forward. Our midfield area is strong. Henderson will learn much in the championship including how to deal with the pressure of having to win week in week out with a support that expects it. Much better for him to do that than get the odd game against diddy sides for us or 15 to 20 mins once a month. Celtic have the best youths in the country but unless players are exceptional and I mean able to step straight in and look like a European class player straight away they will have to go on loan and get experience. I’m pleased with this new strategy. I think it is very modern thinking and can benefit the club long term. Most big clubs across europe are doing exactly the same thing. If they don’t make it then it will increase their worth. Look at Dylan for example. Had he not been on loan to Hibs last season they wouldn’t have thought twice about the Bhoy. I am looking forward to see Allan in a Celtic shirt. In my opinion he is custom made for a Celtic side. Good players get better in good teams. I think we will be happy with him in the next couple of months. With our possession he will be able to pick those passes I have seen him make for Hibernian.

Hope the Celts get a good win today and set us up for midweek.
