Scott Brown sat down

1251

You know what Dundee United really need?  Scott Brown to turn up at Hampden on Sunday with a point to prove. We’ve complained for years about the way media scrutiny falls haphazardly on Celtic but God help us if we ever acquire the cosy relationship others cultivate in order to avoid the light scrutiny required to keep them healthy.

Celtic players are allowed to drink before their day off (as is the manager).  Scott didn’t punch anyone, didn’t threaten anyone, didn’t drive under the influence, didn’t speak inappropriately and didn’t break club rules.

Had he not sat down this would never have been a story, even if he’d had an additional 10 drinks.  ‘Scott Brown sat down’ is the story – and that’s the worst they can come up with.  Paying someone £100 for a photograph and spending 30 minutes writing about it has to be the cheapest cover in publishing history.  It doesn’t pass the ‘news’ test, it is celebrity gossip.

Pin it to the dressing room wall and he’ll be Man of the Match on Sunday, you can bank on it.

CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner is tonight!  Soooooooo excited.  See you there.

  3. Sadly had to miss CQN11 due to a late health problem, I was so looking forward to it, last years CQN10 made me appreciate how special the group of people on this blog are. I was hoping to further explore my Coatbridge roots with the esteemed Leftclicktic who I have met and chatted to in the North Stand a few times, as well as the many other Coatbridge bhoys from this place. I hope the St Patricks day festivities go well for all attending, it really is a special place to be.

    Birth

Like a lot of young men in there twenties I had but a general knowledge of WW2and when it came to the Blitz it was London Coventry and my own Belfast that stood out .

It wasn’t until 1981 when I was one of the men in the blocks that possessed the miniature radios that I was un / fortunate tolisten to a Radio four documentary on the Clyde bombings

I remember it well as it was broadcast the same night that Francis Hughes spoke to us from the side of his prison door about him embarking on hunger strike the next day.

Listening to Frank in one ear and to the programme in the other ( through the use of an earpiece)had a remarkable effect on me no less because of the programme’s use of dramatic backing music and the sounds of explosions.

I tried trawling through the BBC s archives to see if the programme is available but with no success .Maybe with your undoubted talent and skill you might be more successful

Anyway I was just letting you know that at least one person understood the meaning of you earlier post

The Frank Kopel tribute tomorrow is entirely appropriate but bear in mind the battle fought by Celtic’s Billy McPhail who argued that he suffered dimentia symptoms from his 30’s onwards as a result of heading the heavy ball.

My dad used to tell a story about meeting Billy in his later years which was very very sad as he was such a nice man.

Father Sweeny was and is a breath of fresh air. When he was at St Bridget’s in Baillieston he used to come to our house on a regular basis for his dinner. Last year when my Mother was ill we reminisced about the evening I met FS outside our house when I was coming home from school. I used to sneak in to the kitchen and grab wee Biddy by the waist and she would always give me a nuclear verbal. A wee feisty woman from Donegal she new every verbal insult in the book but was always a paragon of virtue in front of the priest. Anyway one evening FS and I who met at the door both sneak into the kitchen and my wee Ma is peeling the tatties without a care in the world. FS who has been briefed on the mission shuffles forward undetected and grabs Bridged by the waist. Even I got a fright as she swung round with the tattie peeling knife and unloaded her Donegal gob machine gun with every possible explicit that you would deem to be profanity in the direction of the Father. He just burst out laughing as did I as wee Biddy tried to catch all her words as they launched themselves in his direction. My mother and I laughed and laughed at the memory of that evening last year on what turned out to be the last evening we spent together. Father Sweeny is one special guy and was a great source of inspiration to me and a great friend to my Family. My Mother always smiled when his name was mentioned. I am glad he was a part of a son and mothers last night together.

Andyr53 and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, Thanks to WG, Lennybhoy and everyone else involved, My only complaint is that table 21 should be split up next year, those guys make an art out enjoying themselves. , and it was good to see Oldtim cutting back his consumption for lent.

Hopefully Marys meals will benefit considerably from last night, and a magnificent gesture from the 3 guys involved in Lisa’s auction. That girl is a breath of fresh air, long may her and Kris be part of the Celtic family

Wonder what the team will be tomorrow, lots of ifs, buts and maybes……..

I’d play Forrest tomorrow, know he was poor against St Johnstone, but he played well (in my opinion) at Tannadice and managed the full game, his first 90 for what seems like ever.

Signs of improvement, return to fitness and some confidence building support from the fans, coupled with a game on the new, wide Hampden surface, should add up to a performance.

    C’mon the Hoops.

Thankyou for that and for sharing your experience.

I will look for one of the documentaries and will hopefully post a link in a minute or two.

I am of Clydebank stock in that Clydebank was my first home until I was aged 5.

However, of greater importance it was my late father’s home town after he left Donegal at the age of two and it was my grandparents home for the rest of their lived when they left Ireland in 1929.

I grew up listening to stories of Clydebank — its schools, cafes, Oh Holy Redeemers church, the war, Singers Factory and clock, John Brown’s shipyards and so much more but mostly its people.

There were the remanants of the blitz fully 30 and 40 years later with derelict half demolished buildings scattered throughout the town and any number of waste ground sites that were just left sitting.

A couple of years ago, Paddybhoy88 made a comment to me saying that all the family had just about left Clydebank. In the eyes of many there was nothing to stay for and so the kids and grandkids all eventually upped and offed.

Some were evacuated after that first night of bombing and simoly never returned “home”.

For years, Clydebank – which had been able to boast the most efficient and flexible workforce in Europe — was a town without hope.

Local politicians did their best, but at a national level it was a town abandoned in favour of the so called “New Towns” like Glenrothes, Cumberbnauld and East Kilbride — yet they were modelled on what had happened in Clydebank at the turn of the century.

By coincidence, when the Government did get around to redesigning the heart of the town, the chief architect was a German who did his best but without real political muscle behind him could only do so much and go so far.

I grew up in the affluent west end of Glasgow – and it is an area I love to bits. My heart is there in many respects.

But my soul will always be a Bankie.

No town or community should be left without Hope, as I am sure you are only too well aware, and no matter where we go in life, what we achieve, what station or profession we rise to, we should always remember our roots and what was sarificed and undergone by others and which in some way contributed to what we make of ourselves and our children.

Scotland, The UK as a whole, can never repay what it owes to the people of Clydebank and not just those who perished and suffered from the immediate effects of the Blitz.

    https://broganrogantrevinoandhogan.wordpress.com/2013/11/09/death-on-the-clyde-the-politicians-poppycock/

By the way we should also never forget that it was on this day that the Birmingham Six were finally released from prison after a litany of miscarriages of justice.
