Scottish football as it should be

614

Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.

You can contribute to the 1254125 1254125 call to ensure Celtic retain our affinity with our founding cause by buying a raffle ticket for a fabulous framed Celtic top, signed by the equally-fabulous Seville squad.  Do it today.

Willie Wallace had a great time signing copies of his Heart of a Lion at Waterstons in East Kilbride and Falkirk this afternoon. East Kilbride was busier but the photos of stock Falkirk (below) before and after tells you all about his day. I hear our most recent treble winning captain came alone for a book at East Kilbride.

We’re at Waterstones, Stirling, on Thursday evening for late night shopping, will confirm times tomorrow. If you can’t make it along you can still order your signed copy below.

  3. The Boy Jinky, Got hooked on American Football many years ago. T’was the year The Chicago Bears won and I was intrigued with one big lad known as The Refrigerator, I think his real name was William Perry. So I became a Bears fan (I know, I know). Anyhow since then the clowns have gone from bad to worse. So a couple of years ago I decided to change teams and since then I have followed The Packers. Can’t say I watch too much of it now apart from The Super Bowl.

  4. TBJ – Im also hearing there was a bit of competition singing on the bus, not sure who got the words correct.

Been a tad rough today, no every day your team wins a double.

Question, when is the the draw for the CL made ?

Is our first qualifier regionalised ?

  8. A SHERIFF has cleared a Celtic fan of

behaving in a manner likely to incite

public disorder at a football match in

Inverness by singing a pro-IRA song.

    Calum Graham (21) of Riccarton

    Street, Glasgow, was identified by

    two police officers from video

    footage screened in court at

    Inverness singing “The Roll of

    Honour” a pro-IRA song

    commemorating hunger strikers in

    Northern Ireland’s prisons in 1981.

The fan, who was attending a Caley-

Thistle v Celtic match in Inverness

on August 25 last year admitted in

his evidence that he was one of a

group of fans singing the song.

But he denied the charge that he

    behaved in an offensive manner

likely to incite public disorder by

singing songs in support of a

    terrorist organisation.

    Inverness Sheriff Court heard during

his trial from from two police officers

who said Graham was one of two

fans who were arrested at the game

for singing the song. They were

    among dozens of fans caught

chanting the song on camera by

    officers drafted in from Glasgow.

    Sheriff Margaret Neilson said she

was satisfied the song could be

considered offensive and that it was

a song which supported a terrorist

    organisation.

But she said she found no evidence

that the singing of the song by

Graham was “likely to incite public

    disorder”.

“Parliament clearly has it in mind

that you must pass this hurdle for it

to be an offence,” she said. “I have a

    certain sympathy with the police

officers trying to deal with this

    legislation.”

She said she was not satisfied the

Crown has proved its case to the

    standard necessary to convict

Graham told the court in evidence he

had no convictions and never been

    in trouble with police before.

    He told his solicitor Duncan

Henderson he had attended over 300

    Celtic matches and regularly sang

    the song.

Asked if he had been aware of any

    difficulties before singing the song.

“No not at all,” he replied,

He said after the case: “I’m relieved.

The last 10 months have been

terrible and I’m glad it’s all over. I

will never sing the song again.”

  11. Roy Hodgson has made a personal

plea to England fans to avoid

chanting of a “religious or political

    perspective” during England’s

friendly with Republic of Ireland at

    Wembley tomorrow.

The move follows a Fifa request that

    the English Football Association

should warn supporters but it is

    understood there are no special

security measures in place for a

fixture that has not been played

since the game 18 years ago at

    Lansdowne Road that was

abandoned during the first half as

    England fans rioted.

The FAI is not making any similar

    demands of its team’s supporters

for fear of exacerbating the potential

    for disruption.

    The England manager’s intervention

comes in the email sent to all

    England fans before an

    international, which they should

    receive today. Hodgson wrote:

    “England fans are rightly renowned

for their passionate backing of the

    Three Lions wherever and

whenever the team plays, at home

or abroad. With this next match

coming in the middle of half-term

week, it promises to be a great

family occasion and everyone in the

stadium should be able to enjoy it.

“Ahead of the Ireland fixture, on

behalf of the FA, I would like to ask

our supporters to please respect our

opponents and welcome them in the

    right way. Wembley is considered

the world over as the home of

football and we ask those attending

to not take part in any chanting –

particularly of a religious or political

    perspective – which could cause

offence to our visitors or fellow

    fans.”

    Hodgson’s programme notes also

make the same point and mention

    how regarding the reputation of

England fans, “sadly it can be

    undone very quickly by a

Probably best to let that one go. Sometimes the written word is a poor substitute for actual conversation and written words can be distorted, misinterpreted or ambiguous. Having read both your contributions, neither of you have done anything. But sometimes it’s best to leave things for a day or two then kiss and make up.
