Scottish football on solid ground

1313

Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

    Excellent post.

I should mention that I nearly missed it, as I scrolled through the trolls, the discussion on Palestine and some posters carrying over an argument from last night.

Those who think that the blog ‘isn’t broken’ are wrong. It may be a format that meets the needs of the self indulgent attention seekers. However, Paul should give some thought to those who no longer read or post (at all or as much). Are you happy with what you have lost? Worth asking at least.

But I digress. I enjoyed your post.

Around the time that Sevco were born, I pondered as to how Celtic should spend their time in the following years. To me, it was simple. Qualify for the CL 5 years on the trot. Sell when we have to. Reinvest. Allow ourselves to slowly improve.

I have been a bit disappointed in how things have gone to date. It LOOKS like we are trying to follow such a strategy, just not doing a great job of it.

Or are we following such a strategy? I wonder now, what is our strategy? Perhaps CQN can get an interview with someone from Celtic and actually explore this.

I don’t expect a response. You’ll never find this post in this bog of a blog…..:)

So really what you’re saying is that you believe the GB should be highlighting issues that are important to you.

The GB don’t do anything unless it’s well thought through beforehand so to suggest that they require ‘re educated’ is nonsense.

What you fail to grasp continuously is that above all else, regardless of what anyone thinks of their actions, politics and displays, the members of the GB were Celtic supporters prior to their formation in 2006 and remain Celtic supporters.

They back to the team repeatedly when others bump their gums in the stands or thump their keyboards on the internet.

I think everyone recognises how vital Champions League qualification is and what a difference it makes.

The balancing act is how to achieve that and if possible retain the best possible squad.

I know that all players have their price and appreciate that Celtic have invested fairly heavily in a scouting system that is constantly looking for quality replacements for every position.

I speak to Celtic fans regularly who are very happy at what has gone on in the past few years in that regard with the capture of the likes of Wanyama, Matthews, Izzy, Hooper, Lustig, Commons, Johansson and so on.

I am a little more cynical personally but hey that is just my view.

However, that area still needs to grow and improve as does the transition from talented under 20 squad through to first team contenders.

I think we have a few who can now do that — McGregor, Henderson etc.

The progression will take time, but the effort has to be constant and relentless.

    Wee Ron

    Thanks for that.

I don’t see there being a change in the single thread format of the blog — that has never been discussed or suggested at any time and to be honest I don’t think it will get Paul’s support.

I understand why some will say that they would prefer a multi thread blog, in the hope that those who want to talk about Palestine, or the referendum or any other hot topic that is non football related would stick to a separate thread, but to be honest that is neither guaranteed and personally I think it would take away from the blog.

Other suggestions have been made that are worth considering perhaps — though I don’t know all the details or the suggestions.

Obviously, I know many folk who used to post but don’t anymore as they simply don’t like some of the posts, or disagree with some of the opinions, or feel that it is not football related enough, or to be frank have just moved on.

At the end of the day Paul will consult others and a final layout will be decided but I don’t expect it to be radically different to what you see just now.

There will be a modification to the bookstore page so that this is separate from the main blog page.

There are two reasons for that.

First many folk, including Paul, don’t want the main blog page to become a forum for simply selling books or other items such as the beanie hats and so on. Some see that as the commercialisation of the blog and whilst it certainly adds a certain commercial element to what went on before, it is actually far more than that and links in with certain charity aims that hopefully everyone can support.

Secondly, if you are going to sell or promote anything via the web then this particular style of wordpress forum is hopeless for that purpose as it is currently set out.

Contrary to what was suggested by Blantyre Tim last night, the entire remodeling process is controlled by Paul and the technician working on the reversioning is someone who Paul personally has worked with for a long time and is the only person he trusts to access the information contained on the CQN server — this is something that is totally understandable.

Hopefully the updated site ( I have no idea what it will look like on completion ) will meet with the approval of all or at least most, and will enhance the site going forward.

Who knows what kind of technology we will have in 5 or 6 years — the blog could radically change in that time and to be honest developments in the internet and its use will always force evolution.
