Shadow industry around football

167

There’s speculation in one of the ‘papers today that Celtic are interested in a 28-year-old forward playing in the English second-tier whom few of us have heard of.  Celtic will sign a player of this profile on occasion, but he will not feature in a target list over two months before the transfer window opens.  Lists with that profile on them are visited late in a disappointing window.

Footballers and their agents are always looking to maximise their return.  Newspapers are always looking for stories.  What does an agent need to do to be able to tell a newspaper in good conscience that Celtic are looking at a player?  I think an email and phone call to one of the scouts is enough.  There’s a whole shadow industry around football which sits in plain sight but is underappreciated.

“You can’t just drop someone into a football club from the other side of the world and expect them to adapt to the culture, food, training, all these various facets it takes.”  Brendan Rodgers, talking about Yang’s recent good form after arriving at the club in the summer.

He added, “People not only forget it, but don’t understand it, or don’t want to understand it.”  Too succeed at the game we need to understand key components of the game.  None is more important that how to support the development of players.

  1. Quite agree Paul –

just to add to what Brendan says:“You can’t just drop someone into a football club from the other side of the world and expect them to adapt to the culture, food, training, all these various facets it takes.” Brendan Rodgers, talking about Yang’s recent good form after arriving at the club in the summer.

Many people “don’t want to understand” – just because a club may have the money, it is not as easy as walking into a supermarket and buying a MARS BAR. Celtic have a model and Brendan has aluded to the fact that he supports it – there appears to be glitch at the moment, but nothing that a league title will not blow away – we can buy some confectionery at a later date.

  2. Now that Brendan has got his way and Mark Lawwell has gone with his right hand man. Are we going to appoint a replacement or does Brendan intend to be defacto head of Recruitment as well as his coaching and Management jobs

  3. Feel free to read and interpret yourself, your all big boys

    A fine bit of work

    ===================

AT – it is indeed. I attended the Tommy Burns Supper in Edinburgh on Friday and Bernard spoke honestly and passionately about his love affair with Celtic.

A great lad and I hope he enjoys his retirement and continues his love of all things Celtic.

    Cheers for that AT.

    Not seen that before.

Brought a tear to my eye tbh.

He was an absolute gentleman as well as an outstanding player, captain and role model.

Met him at a boxing do and got a photo with him, which I show to every Tim I meet. 😂

Was chatting to him in between the contests, as I was one of the event organisers and it was like talking to one of your pals or neighbours. So humble, grounded and down to earth for such a legend.

    Gone but never forgotten.

  6. dearie me.

Celtic ultras group the Green Brigade have hit out at club chiefs after claiming they have been denied a designated area at the upcoming women’s team matches – and will now BOYCOTT the games.

    AT,

Bloody hell, could you not give me a warning – greetin just after finishing my lunch…

A tremendous tribute, first time I’ve seen that 👍

What was used by Stevie McCabe (Referee) for the first time in the 1969 English FA cup final?”

I know the answer now ( I looked it up !) but would never have got it. A very good question, The the handful of humorous answers were also very good -))

P67- FYI ‘ the second tier of English football ‘,is a million times better quality than the league we are in, this current Celtic team wouldn’t make the Play Offs IMO, the player in question Sammie Szmodics, has really improved in last 2 seasons at Blackburn Rovers, playing a bit further forward, and a very good finisher. So don’t sign anyone at 28 plus? Barry Robson, Paul Hartley, Aaron Mooy ,Tosh McKinley, Stan Varga ? I wish they were available for Sunday,it takes all sorts to make a team

    Good article Paul.

Brendan is smart and knows his stuff.

Yang will be asset in the run in.

    Daizen playing well.

    Nicolas showing some promise.

If Luis can get fit we’ll have decent options out wide.

James fit and on standby also helps.

As for your primary thrust ….

“There’s a whole shadow industry around football which sits in plain sight but is underappreciated”

    Hmm.

    If I may?

There’s one element your article didn’t address.

Industries (shadow or otherwise) only survive or thrive if there is a viable market for their products.

In this example, lamentably, there are many football supporters who (in between game days) are willing to consume this p15h AND pay for the privilege.

    🤔🤔🤔🤦🤦🤦

I didn’t realise that was the player in question. He’d be a massive step up from Idah.

Q1)What was used for the first time by the referee in the 1969 english facup final?
