Shadow of Prodan, Jullien a different type of project

307

From what I see in photographs, Christopher Jullien, who completed his transfer to Celtic this morning, is 8’6”, chiselled, and already filling the Celtic Park tunnel.  We needed at least one central defender, so I am delighted he is in so early in the transfer window.

Second observation (after his stature): he is not a ‘project’, or at least, he’s an older and more expensive project than we normally buy.  We will continue to sign players for less than €8m, but there is also value in this space.  If this is the new norm, it is where we should be aiming.

Christopher will join Kristofer as our top central defender pairing, but we lost Boyata and Benkovic, so there remains a gap in the squad – perhaps one for a more traditional looking ‘project’.

The shadow of Daniel Prodan lingers in Scottish football.  Prodan was a £2.2m Rangers signing in 1998, but whatever was done at his medical, a knee injury was not diagnosed.  The player never played a game for the club, which was so chastened, it passed up the chance to sing John Hartson a year later.  Hartson had a perfectly good knee, which had recovered from an earlier operation.  Hartson went on to do well elsewhere, including against Rangers, who, having bought Prodan, lost Hartson, then punished by Hartson, were cursed by a unique treble.

Two years ago Celtic signed South African central defender, Rivaldo Cotzee, subject to a medical, which he failed, due to a knee injury.  The player has played only a dozen games since, all in South Africa.

What do we know about knee injuries?  Sometimes they get better, sometimes they don’t.  David Turnbull must now wait for the outcome of an operation next week, which will determine his future in the game.  Let’s hope he makes a full recovery; he was certainly a player I looked forward to seeing at Celtic.

  1. FATHER JACK – Pity the uppity zombies and Stevie Ghee when Lenny unleashes the Celtic firepower on their bankrupt rag tag band of £200k misfits

    ?

  2. I might be in the minority in saying this…

But if K.T leaves this summer, and we recoup 25 million. And proceed to sign Peraud and Bolo to compete at left back.

I for one, could live with that.

K.T has been a phenomenon breaking in to the first team at such a young age. And cementing his spot at left back. Performing without fear, and to a high standard in Europe, against likes of Man City etc.

He’s one of our own, etc etc…

But greats have left before, and the wheel continues to turn. The team… the collective is the sum of multiple parts. Providing he is amply replaced, then what will be will be.

Ruggyman- correct, we need to move on,KT will go soon, with everyone’s blessing, he will come back to us a better player,he’s been with us since he was a wean, you can’t deny these Bhoys the chance of taking the money on offer.HH

  5. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Wow, pretty good job of normalizing the departure and chasing KT getting done on here, it will soon be made up common knowledge the he wants away. KT wants to be a Celtic player it’s all he’s ever wanted, now that he’s a first team pick in line for the captaincy why would anyone think his ambitions have changed?

  6. STEPHBHOY @ 6:31 PM,

    Well, the aul strop…

Do you know what I said at the time? I’m not buying that pantomime.

Isn’t it interesting how we’ve been hearing how difficult transfer business is, how strewn with pitfalls it is…

We’ve seen the Turnbull (forgive me) saga.

First it’s identifying the player and making an approach

Then there’s agreeing a price between the Club

Then there’s the “magnificent” personal terms

    Then there’s the exacting medical…

Or you can just throw a strop and by pass that stuff;)

Your post deserves and will, hopefully get, a more fullsome answer…

    As it happens I’m…

    Have a grand night all…

    Hail Hail

If the money is right,KT,Callum,Eddie ,will go,it’s the way football has always been.

  8. They haven’t got a pot to pish in or a windy to throw it out of.

Hence the loans deals and the £200k diddies.

It took us over 100 years to bury the old club, and we’ll do away with the new one in less than 12.

No crystal ball required to see reality.

  9. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

I’m sure the money can be right next season or the season after, telling suitors that they are not for sale yet rather than encourage offers would discourage clubs from unsettling our players. But then if the Plc want to sell them then babbling shite about every player having their price would do exactly that eh.

  10. 16 Roads

Maybe not, but the team of diddies done us twice last season, that was real.

They won’t die, you know that.

  11. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Ruggyg..,

It’s called hawking your assets, that’s the reality, obviously a stranger to you when you can’t se it.

CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION

Well done for pointing out what the panic merchants seem to have forgotten. The CEO and greedy agents might have pound signs in their eyes but I doubt very much if KT has . It might not prevent him being pushed out but it won’t be on his initiative.

  13. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

You tell the players agents the players will not be going for two years and offers will not be entertained.

If the player puts in a transfer reuest then that takes precedence.

Reading the drivel on here you’d be expected to believe KT put in a transfer request, if he did I’m sure we’d know all about it.

  14. !!Bada Bing!! on

Will it still be drivel, when he’s pictured in an Arsenal jersey in a couple of weeks??

  15. Celtic, could have made a statement that KT purely and simply wasn’t for sale. Not for sale at any price.

However, by stating a price (if we are to believe reports / £25 million) .. by stating a value, they have entered in to a negotiation. Entering in to a negotiation is a buying / selling signal. It suggests we are open to doing business.

Therefore Arsenal are encouraged to revisit and keep coming back with improved terms.

It seems to me, a sale of KT is entirely possible…. even likely

  16. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

So, who is unsettling our players, the clubs who are encouraged to make offers or the Plc trying to flog players who have not requested a transfer, oh wait it’s the meeja blame them cause they told the world that every player has their price and offers will be considered.

Solution is simple unless our star players want away then agents and suitors are told not yet we’ll let you know when they put in a transfer request until then look elsewhere. It’s no hard if you want to keep your best players when they want to stay.

  17. The club have said that CalMac is not for sale, NL has been as good as openly touting KT, if they didn’t want to sell KT they would have said so.

  18. FATHER JACK – They beat us when our squad was crippled with injuries and we were about 30 yards off the pace.

They are dying right before our very eyes trying to stop the 10, just like the old club folded attempting to emulate 1967.

Look at the calibre and value of the players they are signing just now ffs.

They have nothing else to throw never mind the kitchen sink.

    The delusion is staggering.

  19. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Rugged…,

As I said, hawking assets and unsettling the player, being told by the love of your life you are surplus to requirements will sour the relationship, no?

pushing him out the door is what you are implying and your obviously ok with that as long as there’s some money in it.

  20. I’ll get shit for this but I don’t think KT is ready for the EPL, he had a great start to his career but injury has really stalled that development. He has at times been suspect at the back and is not consistent at putting in crosses/passes from the wing.

  21. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

In two years he’ll be 24 it’s no like time is running out.

  22. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Ruggyg..,

There’s a wee bit your ignoring, now that they have set a value, if KT rejects it and plays out his contract any future renegotiation will have to reflect that value, basically the Plc have told KT to go end of he’s not wanted at Celtic Park.

  23. Canamalar…

its the temptation that presents itself.

I don’t know what your line of work is, but if a company made you a proposal to quadruple your salary right here and now. You’d be tempted. You would balance that versus the risk of sitting tight where you are, in the hope a further similar opportunity arises in a couple of years. But there is no guarantees. the opportunity might not arise again.

  24. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

So we have reached a consensus, the Plc are chasing KT out the door and have got plenty on here thinking its a good thing, which is where I started, it took a bit of time but we got there, that’s reality innit.

  25. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Ruggyg…,

No idea how you could make such a comparison, I am not living my dream or working my dream job so the attempted analogy is poor to say the least.

  26. We’ll agree to disagree.

To say Celtic, the plc board are chasing K.T out the door. That isn’t accurate. They would be willing to sell, at a certain price level. But that is different from chasing the lad out the door.

The reality as I see it, is … if Arsenal meet Celtic’s valuation of K.T, then Celtic will then put the ball in Kieran’s court. Final decision will be up to him.

  27. 16 Roads

I can’t agree that we were crippled with injuries, the game last year we had in the line up

    Gordon

    CalMac

    Benkovic

    Boyatta

    Lustig

    Ntcham

    Brown

    Sinclair

    Christie

    Forrest

    Johnstone

The second game we lost we had in the line up

    Bain

    Ajer

    Jozo

    Lustig

    Hayes

    CalMac

    Rogic

    Brown

    Johnstone

    Burke

    Eddie

Neither team was crippled with injuries, they should have been good enough to beat a team of diddies, they weren’t, off the pace, fair enough, if they were, they shouldn’t have been.

Football is not played on paper, the scum will not die, that should be obvious to you and everyone else, the SFA bent over backwards to make sure they didn’t die, as did every other club, why, for the money of course.

  28. On a different note… who would of thought that Cascarino could be so pivatol at a World Cup

  29. !!Bada Bing!! on

The Huddle- i disagree my friend, if a Club accepts a bid, you’re away,6 year contract or not…

  30. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    The huddle,

Are the Plc negotiating KTs exit?

Has KT put in a transfer request?

If the answers are yes and no, then the player is being chased out of Celtic Park by the Plc.

My observation was that this has been normalized and encouraged by too many on here, I have spent the last half hour being told it’s ok and I should be ok with it because that’s how greedy people are encouraged to behave and we should all be greedy no matter what it costs us.

My point was I don’t think there’s a consensus about KT on here.

I don’t know if he’s being forced out, I’d expect KT to tell us at some point if that is the case.

Does KT have to leave if he doesn’t want too?
