Signed Roy Keane shirt, Hearts lay it on the line

407

We are going to see a lot of people in their true light through this.  Last night, Scott McGarvey, son of Celtic legend Frank, put his prized, signed, Roy Keane Republic of Ireland jersey on ebay to raise money for Glasgow South East Foodbank.  Their need, like so many others who cater for the poor, has never been greater.

Scott got the match worn shirt from Roy’s Ireland, and Frank’s Celtic, team-mate, Packie Bonner.  It is a rare and cherished piece of sporting memorabilia. Keep an eye on the auction here.  If you don’t have a wall for it, you can always move house.

Hearts “chairman’s statement”, (self-identifying is ‘so Edinburgh’)* issued by Ann Budge last night, was worthy of a read.  If you can look past the close-up of Mr Budge (she started it) occupying all real estate above the fold, she had an obligatory kick at The Sun for an earlier article bereft of the basic grasp of business, before getting onto the matter in hand.

Hearts, like almost every other club in Scotland and most in Europe, had no contingency for what she tells us all of football knows is a shutdown until “late July/August”.  It was either cut costs early or make people redundant eventually.  Earlier this week we heard from Aberdeen, those two are as ready for this crisis as anyone apart Celtic, but neither is in a good place.  At least Aberdeen know they will play top flight football next season.

Budge was first to move and put staff and players on 50% salary, with minimum wage protections.  Many others will follow.  Stenhousemuir are showing the way for clubs who know they can rely on fans to keep their club alive (yes, Stenhousmuir fans can do what others cannot).  On Wednesday, their chairman, wrote, “We’ve had a surge in people wanting to buy shares in the club.  Many have.  Welcome to The Warriors.  We’ve had people making donations, and lots more offers too.”

These are hard times, but many clubs with either be saved by the largess of their fans, or will perish in the summer.

Remember to check out the Roy Keane auction.

*sorry salt ‘n’ sauce friends.

I laughed out loud at this from BBC ..

And King confirmed fresh investment has now been “put on hold” as the club deal with the coronavirus crisis.

I’m still proud to call you my friend!

    CRC is some bhoy too!

I email him every week…………….with my weight!

  3. King self-isolates in South Africa, steps down as chairman and announces that the investment from the far east based scottish businessman has been shelved amid the coronaviris crisis.

Laughed again on second, third and fourth readings.

    Thank you DCK.

In these genuinely troubled times, laughter is important.

The mystical far east investment has self isolated and cannot travel to the UK

ANN BUDGE has warned Hearts players to take 50 per cent wage cuts by next week or she will SUSPEND their salaries.

The Tynecastle chairman sent an email to first-team stars telling them of her plan to invoke controversial clause 12 – just hours after SPFL lawyer Rod McKenzie told all clubs his judgement was they CAN use it if players refuse to drop their wages.

    Thunder Road,

You should not be carrying that pain, its not yours to own, you need closure to a question you should not even have to ask.

    Did you ask your mum?

It could have been a well meant intention based on flawed judgement, you will never know until you ask, just be prepared for any answer, remember people also suffer shock and don’t act the way they are expected.

Sorry for butting in but you could be needlessly torturing yourself.

‘King steps down….’ he was toxic ffs, nobody could do any business with thems as long as he was there.

  10. BADA,

I agree,it was Glasgow (Evening) Times which used term ‘steps down’.

  11. BADA, come on, there is/was an exiled millionaire scottish businessman willing to do business with him 😆

  12. A couple of months ago, someone, I can’t remember who, had a timeline whereby, due to the money issues, court cases etc. King would leave around the end of March / early April.

    Anyone remember who it was?

  14. Thunder Road,

Hope you are well, haven’t spoken to you since Munich.

My last thoughts of my dad are getting angry with him for being cantankerous with my mum. It was caused by denial on my part that he was dying. He was cantankerous through frustration of being debilitated through heart failure. He left school at 15 and worked all his life. Being the way he was at the end would have been driving him insane.

Like you I have never really discussed his final days. I prefer to remember to good times and how good a person he was.

Canman I hope things work out for you they way you would like.

  15. Jimkystar, got my 4 year old sleeping in my arms and can’t stop, my dad couldn’t, make it over but he sat me down as a 3 year old to watch the game, he died more than 30 years ago aged 67 I break up every time

  16. Camusbhoy, BT – I went to the stadium on my 60th birthday – the older I get the more people crowd round me when I watch the game, they are not actually here anymore but they gather round fir that game. One if the most emotional experiences ever.

Just watched the lisbon lions prog on bbc scotland……….no matter how many times i’ve watched this and other programmes about these ghuys, it generally reduces me to tears, of happiness of course. I’m a lucky guy it was my era and as a young fan met most if not all, from jinky and the buzzbomb walking down the main st in saltcoats, big billy, when i was an apprentice putting the central heating in his house to just meeting them and gettin the autographs at games……….its enough to make my heart go….you know the rest!

    Have just noticed that

    “David Cunningham King”

    is an anagram of

    “Duckin’ Diving Hangman”

Does the anagram accurately capture his character and his impact on Sevco?

  19. Kings statement is basically paving the way for a massive distress call from sevco.

    ‘distressed companies’ ‘witheld investment’ etc

It wouldn’t suprise me if Park ( no company income for 6 months) has said he won’t plug the ( £20m? ) black hole to survive the next 6 months and King has chucked him the keys.

Park and Robertson etc maybe didn’t even know he was away for good and was putting out a statement.

I guarantee we are days away from open talk of admin for them.

  23. My usual early post this morning suggested a list of everyone that was posting or lurking, if only to let everyone know that we were all safe. I did notice that the list took off but eventually evolved into something much much better – a good number of returning posters. I really do hope that trend continues, particularly as we become more and more dependent on such distractions in these worrying times. And when (and if) the football does recommence I’m expecting an overwhelming participation rate for the first ‘player of the year’ vote!

Stay safe everybody. And no falling out on here!
