Signed Roy Keane shirt, Hearts lay it on the line

407

We are going to see a lot of people in their true light through this.  Last night, Scott McGarvey, son of Celtic legend Frank, put his prized, signed, Roy Keane Republic of Ireland jersey on ebay to raise money for Glasgow South East Foodbank.  Their need, like so many others who cater for the poor, has never been greater.

Scott got the match worn shirt from Roy’s Ireland, and Frank’s Celtic, team-mate, Packie Bonner.  It is a rare and cherished piece of sporting memorabilia. Keep an eye on the auction here.  If you don’t have a wall for it, you can always move house.

Hearts “chairman’s statement”, (self-identifying is ‘so Edinburgh’)* issued by Ann Budge last night, was worthy of a read.  If you can look past the close-up of Mr Budge (she started it) occupying all real estate above the fold, she had an obligatory kick at The Sun for an earlier article bereft of the basic grasp of business, before getting onto the matter in hand.

Hearts, like almost every other club in Scotland and most in Europe, had no contingency for what she tells us all of football knows is a shutdown until “late July/August”.  It was either cut costs early or make people redundant eventually.  Earlier this week we heard from Aberdeen, those two are as ready for this crisis as anyone apart Celtic, but neither is in a good place.  At least Aberdeen know they will play top flight football next season.

Budge was first to move and put staff and players on 50% salary, with minimum wage protections.  Many others will follow.  Stenhousemuir are showing the way for clubs who know they can rely on fans to keep their club alive (yes, Stenhousmuir fans can do what others cannot).  On Wednesday, their chairman, wrote, “We’ve had a surge in people wanting to buy shares in the club.  Many have.  Welcome to The Warriors.  We’ve had people making donations, and lots more offers too.”

These are hard times, but many clubs with either be saved by the largess of their fans, or will perish in the summer.

Remember to check out the Roy Keane auction.

*sorry salt ‘n’ sauce friends.

  1. Really didn’t want to see King move on, I always felt they’d get absolutely nowhere near us with him in charge and that’s how it turned out.

He leaves the club a basket case: a ten million budget deficit for this season, a ‘many millions’ sports direct liability, no kit manufacturer for next season, years of losses into the tens of millions and zero trophies.

King was obviously pushed out the door – the club’s website hasn’t carried his standing down statement.

King will demand a generous price for his 25% stake so I don’t see him leaving the stage anytime soon.

  2. Good morning CQN from a beautiful spring morning in the Garngad

    Knightswoodbhoy – welcome

Corkcelt – is it total lockdown now over where you are?? Something we should be doing here in the UK, although the place is a lot quieter there are still people out walking with friends or neighbours and also still a lot of non essential work getting carried out.

IMO – the UK needs total lockdown but then again it maybe to late as the damage might already be done.

On a brighter note, CRC’s Friday night quiz is coming back, I only took part in a couple as I am hopeless but I will be giving it a go. Cheers CRC

  3. LISBON LIONS…

I watched it again on TV last night, and it really made me forget the virus for that Hour. When it ended it took me a few minutes to “come to”, and suddenly remember the current crisis.

Forgive me if I have shared this story previously on here……

My Da took to all the European games at Celtic Park leading up to Lisbon itself. He had travelled to Nantes and maybe Zurich for those away games ?

At the time of Lisbon I was only 11 and a half years old and my Da had arranged for him and appox 8/9 of his Taxis pals to drive to Lisbon from Glasgow in 3 separate cars. I wasnt allowed to go because of the long road journey….according to my Da beforehand ?

I remember him telling me that “If we were flying over to Lisbon he would have taken me, but it was too long a journey for a wee Bhoy” ?

Ive always had good reason to believe that my Da LIED to me before Lisbon, ” Too long a journey for a wee Bhoy” ?

The reason I suspect that he lied is simple…..

I was brought up by my Grand parents ( My Da’s Mum and Dad Easterhouse ). On my Da’s arrival back from Lisbon he came to see us at my Grand parents home and he had brought me a Box for of Goodies from Lisbon. In this Goodie Box was a Ball, a Celtic Pennant, Scarf…and the most wonderful Portugese newspaper which had BOTH the Full Squads of Inter Milan and Celtic on their front page in splendid Gloosy Colour. I had never seen a Newspaper in Colour before ( except maybe the Celtic View ?)…but this fantastic Photo was Glossy…I had it for years until I lost it in the 1980’s due to moving home.

Anyway, my memory of my Da returning from Lisbon was his visit to my grand parents home. I can distinctly remember My Da…his Da and me sitting in our living room, while I opened my Box of Lisbon Goodies.

All the while my Da…and his Da were chatting away maybe for 30/45 minutes or so………..

I cant remember my Da talking to much about the actual game…all he spoke about was…….. ALL the STRIP Clubs that he and his Taxi mates had visited, and how some foreign wummin were doing “The Dance of the Seven Veils” in these Strip Clubs !

In later years I soon realised THAT was the reason why my da didnt take me to Lisbon….it was a Jolly Bhoys Outing !

    Lying Bassa !

    LOL

  4. LISBON LIONS…

It was also great to hear Berttie describing what was “going on” as both teams took to the field and line up on the halfway line, as it was clear that wee Jinky and maybe Willie Wallace were shouting across to the Inter players, and pointing in their directions…”Is it you thats MARKING me ” ?

Up to last night, I had wrongly assumed that Jinky and Wispy were trying to arrange who to swap Shirts with come the end of the match, but wee Bertie cleared that one up.

Those Inter Bhoys MUST have been in shock before a ball was kicked when the Celtic Players started singing in the Tunnel and to them to shout and point at certain Inter players in the way that they did, those Inter Boys must have been saying….WHAT THE Feck…in Italian ?

This Inter mob didnt stand a chance against these Gallus Celtic Bhoys…Ive almost felt pity for them since that day…not !

Seems like the Huns should be getting the old chestnut,”What, the cheque has not arrived yet?I can assure you it was posted from,Hong Kong 3 days ago.Ach,it must be this virus thing that’s holding it up,just sit tight. We will call you sometime in the future, don’t call us”.

  17. Good morning, friends from a very bright looking, dry and almost sunny East Kilbride. A day of painting a bedroom lies ahead for me. Which is thirsty work, of course, so looking forward to and (ahem) relaxing Saturday evening ;-)

  18. Morning Everyone,

Day 5 of not being out of the hoose and with the sleety/hail Hail stuff now battering off the car outside it looks like another day of lockdown.

All good so far here in the freezing north. Should have been in Dubai at this time, beside the pool, celebrating our youngest Bhoys wedding but apparently there’s a bit of a virus going around, which forced us all to cancel any plans we had. Postpone is probably a better word, as the trip will obviously ( God willing ) be rescheduled later in the year hopefully.

Condolences to Canamalar and Kickinthenakas on the recent loss of their Fathers. So sad. Thoughts also with our friend The Exiled Tim and his family during these tough times.

Stay safe everyone, and God bless you all.

Great to see you posting again, my best wishes to you and the family.

hats Off to Mrs BT….What a STAR !

I took my rubbish down to the Bin a few minutes ago, and I also took the opportunity to walk about 15 yards out my front door to see if my local shop was open…Sadly the shutters were down. I hope that he is only late in opening Today, but the Calton/Saltmarket is like a ghost town, so I hope that the shop hasnt closed for the forseeable future, as I was knackered just walking that 15 yards or so and back again ?

  21. Once again Tescos Home Delivery scheme fully booked up…and NO Slots available til around 16th April ?

I have my Tesco delivery this Monday, but like most folk I am unsure exactly what food is still available…I’ll bet that PM Johson, Prince Charles, Hancock etc etc DO NOT have this problem !

    Queue jumpin bassa’s.

Its an absolute disgrace that NHS Staff…especially Front Line Workers havent been tested ….unlike the Elite.

I can only assume that the Medics that tested PM Johnson, Charlie, Hancock etc WERE Tested before they tested the Elite…or were they ?

    ………..

I havent been in The Tolbooth for approx 6 or 7 months, since I first went into hospital in September last year and took my 1st Heart Attack…soon followed by another Heart Attack in early December 2019, when I was admitted yet again due to serious blood loss.

For some time now…the walk to the Tolbooth Pub and back again is a bit too much for me these days…it is a real struggle for me to walk that far and to The Trongate for shopping in recent times.

IF I have went out for a Beer..its only 20 yards away to my REAL lOCAL…Even then Im out of breath etc.

Obviously because of all the medication that Ive been on since last year, I dont go out much to drink beer before this Corona Crisis.

Hopefully we can meet up for a few Beers once this virus etc has gone ?
