Sinister and inflammatory

542

I was considerably alarmed at this morning’s Daily Record article, which appears to equate calls for an inquiry into an alleged conspiracy to subvert tax law, as well as SFA and SPL rules, on a level with sectarianism. Most clearly here:

“Of course, this will infuriate the self-proclaimed, proud ‘bampots’ on social media toiling away 24/7 in pursuit of justice for Scottish football.

“Their irreversibly entrenched view will always be that ‘the Protestant establishment club cheated on an industrial scale’”.

I’m disturbed that so many people on social media are having their views on rule breaking caricatured as an anti-Protestant witch-hunt.

This is wildly inaccurate, sinister and inflammatory. A sign, perhaps, of the direction of travel in this debate.

This bit is really, REALLY, important.

If there is a perception that there is a risk to social media users this debate is closed – trust me on this one. Right now, some are asking themselves, “How much sectarian hatred are the media prepared to stir up if we talk about this?”

Convince people their club’s record is being questioned, not because of rule breaking, but for religious reasons, and you open Pandora’s Box – and we all know this.

Don’t get angry. This angle is thus far isolated, should be mocked and we should quickly move on.

If you want the debate to take place, don’t lose focus and stick to the point: were tax laws, SFA and SPL rules broken, if so, was this an oversight, or was there a conspiracy to subvert the rules and earlier inquiries?

Perhaps most importantly, this is the time for other clubs and their fans to have their say.

Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney on CQN TONIGHT!

Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, and Celt for Change, Brendan Sweeny, Live chat on CQN tonight.

I’m absolutely delighted we have yet another Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, on CQN tonight, as well as a one of the most influential fans in our history, Brendan Sweeny (who will cringe at reading that).

Brendan has researched and written Celtic: The Early Years, forward by Jim. It is the most incredible account of the how and why a football club was formed in Parkhead in 1888, and the seismic events which shaped its future during the Early Years.

Both will be on CQN tonight from 7:30, you can ask questions on the blog and chat to them. Ask Jim about those great times, his career after football, or what’s going on at the club now.

Brendan, as an integral part of Celts for Change, Jungle Bhoys and now Celtic Graves Society, has been a force of nature for the Celtic cause. This is also about as far into the limelight as he’s ever likely to emerge!

Premium Seats competition for Kilmarnock game on Saturday

Magners, Celtic’s main sponsor, are offering fans the chance to win a pair of Premium Seat tickets in the Jock Stein Stand to the match. All you have to do is answer the following question:

Who was Celtic manager when Kilmarnock won their first game in over half a century?

Email answer to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer in the email SUBJECT box.

Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, so this is a one day target!

On another subject, Ad hominem, def:

An ad hominem (Latin for “to the man” or “to the person”), is an attack on an argument made by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, rather than attacking the argument directly. When used inappropriately, it is a logical fallacy in which a claim or argument is dismissed on the basis of some irrelevant fact or supposition about the author or the person being criticised.

Just saying……..

Time for some Labi Siffre tunes.

  6. only way 2 beat the sfa is by withholding cash They r seriously compromised with the eBt scandal and will do what they have 2 do. Which means bad news for us. Sooner we get 2 England the better.

Well done to CQN for organising our two guests tonight. There will be many like me who didn’t post or ask a question but thoroughly enjoyed reading tonight’s entertaining and informative session. Looking forward to Santa bringing me Brendan’s book.

  8. An extremely enjoyable night on CQN thanks to Jim Craig, Brendan Sweeney and Paul67

To all who sometimes get annoyed with the blog its good to remember nights like this when we are all (almost)

  9. great stuff tonight from the bampots! thanks for setting this up Paul67 and thanks again to the legends!

  10. Well what an evening that was!

I made an Beef stew – with a full bottle of Cote du Rhone included – and both Brendan Seeeney and Jim Craig loved it!

Just before they arrived the door bell rang. It was a courier delivering some copies of Celtic captain Scott Brown’s new book which CQN produced.

And tomorrow morning I have a delivery of 4 pallets of The Winds of Change!

Loved some of the stories Jim was telling us tonight away from the blog.

Which Lion was Jock’s ‘blue eyed Bhoy?’

Brendan and Jim signed some copies of Celtic The Early Years. First come first served on these.

    Hope you all enjoyed tonight.

    Interesting article Paul.

The record runs an inflammatory feature.

    Disgraceful? Not in my opinion.

    Predictable? Absolutely.

In 2007 the record’s circulation was 380k. Today it is half that figure.

Us internet bampots are their enemy. We’re putting them out of business. Of course they’ll attack us.

This is their last stand. If they can’t retain their rangers loving constituency the game is up.

Any Celtic fan that buys the daily record?

Now in my book that is disgraceful !

    Hail hail

  12. Winning Captains

Very enjoyable, thanks for giving us the opportunity to speak to another Lion, and to a great Celtic Mhan.

Time for another Q and A session.

    When you made the stew did you;

    a) pour the bottle of wine into the stew

    b) drink the bottle of wine while making the stew or

    c) share the wine with our guests while eating the stew?

  14. Sorry, apart from one or two personal, information questions, the only cutting question asked, the one about the Huns titles, was as usual, fudged.

Would it not be a good idea to get Ex players on,even guys like Brendan, and have a real discussion about whats going on at the moment. This is CQN,we should be getting info into what some of our heroes think on the subject, because we sure as God wont get it anywhere else.

    Anyway,glad that many enjoyed it.

I wasn’t able to ask a question – working – but delighted that Jim and Brendan made time for this small community tonight. Where else does this happen? I’ve not read back mate – did you ask them those questions you want answers to? Perhaps you were working, like me? If not – why not just send them an email or whatever if you want their opinion on any subject? They don’t appear to be the kind of people who will give an equivocal reply to “cutting edge” queries? Not having a go – just not had a chance to review what’s happened tonight…

  16. Beatbhoy – recipe is a secret other than forget stock and more wine.

Back To Basics – if we can get more Celtic ( non CQN ers) to get their news from us…

Turkeybhoy – we have guys on here like a Brth (charity), Hamiltontim ( supporters’ interest) or Auldheid ( rules are rules). Is one a lesser Celtic man than the other?

Jim is a ‘Celtic anorak’ – he’d rather talk about football. Who are we to argue?

Brendan stood up and made a difference. His wife shared a bottle of wine with my wife tonight as the Bhoys went onto the blog. No one should doubt his love for Celtic.

Recently I have been thinking about Celts I don’t like. Craig Burley’s one. I’ll tell you what – Jim Craig is a credit to our club.

He answered a question from Blantyre Tim. I told him that his dad was John Fallon. Couldn’t shut him up talking about how brilliant FALLON Sr is as a player and a man. He enthuses Celtic.

I also noted that the Manchester calculator has now reached 300,000, there must have been a few more trainload of .Chelseas fans arrived late. I will not send the link as it truly does not deserve any more hits but it is worth a look just for a laugh.

    Dismal down here yet again.

BBC weather forecasters keep repeating that it is going to get a lot colder at the weekend. Pretty cold here all week already. Yet again they are being thoughtlessly London centric.

One sad note about last night: WC having to explain why it is dangerous for anyone connected to Celtic in Scotland calling for those titles to be stripped. If we need any evidence for this, just look at the treatment meted out to Neil Lennon for simply being himself.
