Sinister and inflammatory

542

I was considerably alarmed at this morning’s Daily Record article, which appears to equate calls for an inquiry into an alleged conspiracy to subvert tax law, as well as SFA and SPL rules, on a level with sectarianism. Most clearly here:

“Of course, this will infuriate the self-proclaimed, proud ‘bampots’ on social media toiling away 24/7 in pursuit of justice for Scottish football.

“Their irreversibly entrenched view will always be that ‘the Protestant establishment club cheated on an industrial scale’”.

I’m disturbed that so many people on social media are having their views on rule breaking caricatured as an anti-Protestant witch-hunt.

This is wildly inaccurate, sinister and inflammatory. A sign, perhaps, of the direction of travel in this debate.

This bit is really, REALLY, important.

If there is a perception that there is a risk to social media users this debate is closed – trust me on this one. Right now, some are asking themselves, “How much sectarian hatred are the media prepared to stir up if we talk about this?”

Convince people their club’s record is being questioned, not because of rule breaking, but for religious reasons, and you open Pandora’s Box – and we all know this.

Don’t get angry. This angle is thus far isolated, should be mocked and we should quickly move on.

If you want the debate to take place, don’t lose focus and stick to the point: were tax laws, SFA and SPL rules broken, if so, was this an oversight, or was there a conspiracy to subvert the rules and earlier inquiries?

Perhaps most importantly, this is the time for other clubs and their fans to have their say.

Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney on CQN TONIGHT!

Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, and Celt for Change, Brendan Sweeny, Live chat on CQN tonight.

I’m absolutely delighted we have yet another Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, on CQN tonight, as well as a one of the most influential fans in our history, Brendan Sweeny (who will cringe at reading that).

Brendan has researched and written Celtic: The Early Years, forward by Jim. It is the most incredible account of the how and why a football club was formed in Parkhead in 1888, and the seismic events which shaped its future during the Early Years.

Both will be on CQN tonight from 7:30, you can ask questions on the blog and chat to them. Ask Jim about those great times, his career after football, or what’s going on at the club now.

Brendan, as an integral part of Celts for Change, Jungle Bhoys and now Celtic Graves Society, has been a force of nature for the Celtic cause. This is also about as far into the limelight as he’s ever likely to emerge!

Premium Seats competition for Kilmarnock game on Saturday

Magners, Celtic’s main sponsor, are offering fans the chance to win a pair of Premium Seat tickets in the Jock Stein Stand to the match. All you have to do is answer the following question:

Who was Celtic manager when Kilmarnock won their first game in over half a century?

Email answer to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer in the email SUBJECT box.

Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, so this is a one day target!

On another subject, Ad hominem, def:

An ad hominem (Latin for “to the man” or “to the person”), is an attack on an argument made by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, rather than attacking the argument directly. When used inappropriately, it is a logical fallacy in which a claim or argument is dismissed on the basis of some irrelevant fact or supposition about the author or the person being criticised.

Just saying……..

Time for some Labi Siffre tunes.

The report into the activities and culture at HBOS should make for interesting reading today.

Enjoyed the Jim and Brendan slot last night. So who was the Big man’s blue eyed boy? Bobby Murdoch?

On another note, I think I’m right in saying that Jinky is the only player to make everyone’s best eleven. The KOK, Danny and Kenny being left out by those who went for the Lisbon team. Fair enough.

I reckon Danny McGrain is the one Celtic player who would have got into a World xi when at his peak, Jinky and Henrik debatable, considering who they were up against, If I’m being objective.

The ex-West Ham striker signed for Celtic as a free agent to bolster Ronny Deila’s attacking options and the 32-year-old played an hour of a bounce game against Livingston at Lennoxtown last week.

Cole has already said he is happy to use his wealth of experience to help his Parkhead team-mates and give advice. (Various)

MIXU Paatelainen is attempting to bring countryman Alexei Eremenko to Tannadice as the Finn seeks to stave off the danger of relegation.

    Efe’s in the money

CELTIC defender Efe Ambrose has banked a £13,000 reward for his stunning goal for Nigeria against Swaziland.

The 27-year-old converted a superb volley to secure a 2-0 win over the minnows on Tuesday night and send the Super Eagles into the group stage of African qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

However, there was an added bonus for Ambrose and fellow goalscorer, Moses Simon, who both collected $20,000 (£13,000). The bonus for each goalscorer was announced by River State Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike during a visit to the Nigeria training camp earlier this week – and Ambrose duly delivered on matchday. The Aston Villa defender has come under criticism from the Tartan Army in recent years who’ve viewed the former Rangers man as one of Gordon Strachan’s favourites, someone guaranteed a place in the side regardless of form for club or country. 12. For me? Griffiths.

Bolton Wanderers manager Neil Lennon has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is a very good player.

Lennon worked with Griffiths during his time as manager of Scottish Premiership giants Celtic.

The former Nottingham Forest midfielder seems to be a huge fan of the Scotland international striker.

However, Lennon does not appear to think that Griffiths is as good as former Celtic striker Gary Hooper, who joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Norwich City in the summer transfer window.

“He is a natural goalscorer and you can’t coach that, his movement was always very good,” Lennon told The Glasgow Evening Times about Griffiths.

“He’s got a bit of the devil in him – you don’t want to coach that out because some players need that, it helps them play with an edge.”

“He is maybe not at the level of a [Gary] Hooper but is without doubt a quality finisher and one you could work with and make even better,” added Lennon.

Griffiths joined Celtic from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2014 and has now established himself as one of the best players for the Bhoys.

The 25-year-old is the best striker in the current Celtic squad and has been in good form so far this season.

SEE ALSO: Will Celtic win their next four Scottish Premiership games?

Hooper, who was on the books of Celtic from 2010 to 2013, moved to Championship side Wednesday on loan from Premier League club Norwich City in the summer until January 2016.

The 27-year-old forward has created one chance in two Championship appearances for the Owls.

Must tell you,T.C. was not popular amongst the rank and file, but what would we know?

  14. MACJAY 1,

You’re right about TC not being popular with a large percentage of the support. Bit like Sammi, imo. Both very good footballers.

Again imo, Gary Hooper was better than Leigh Griffiths. Mind you, since he left, Gary seems to have gone backward, while Leigh has improved immensely since he joined.

I was a minority of one in my group, over the value that TC brought to the team.

He wasn’t a showy player and in the modern game he would be described as a ” water carrier”.

However, he had immense influence on how we played.

If anyone doubts this, they should ask Kenny Dalglish, the next time they are talking to him.

I have told the story on here of the night I was watching a Scottish League v English League highlights prog, along with two anti TC mates.

Tom Forsythe of Thrm was also watching the game, have played in it.

One of my buddies asked TF what he thought of Callaghan as a player, letting him know what his opinion was.

Forsythe told him in no uncertain terms how good a player Tommy was.
