Sinister and inflammatory

542

I was considerably alarmed at this morning’s Daily Record article, which appears to equate calls for an inquiry into an alleged conspiracy to subvert tax law, as well as SFA and SPL rules, on a level with sectarianism. Most clearly here:

“Of course, this will infuriate the self-proclaimed, proud ‘bampots’ on social media toiling away 24/7 in pursuit of justice for Scottish football.

“Their irreversibly entrenched view will always be that ‘the Protestant establishment club cheated on an industrial scale’”.

I’m disturbed that so many people on social media are having their views on rule breaking caricatured as an anti-Protestant witch-hunt.

This is wildly inaccurate, sinister and inflammatory. A sign, perhaps, of the direction of travel in this debate.

This bit is really, REALLY, important.

If there is a perception that there is a risk to social media users this debate is closed – trust me on this one. Right now, some are asking themselves, “How much sectarian hatred are the media prepared to stir up if we talk about this?”

Convince people their club’s record is being questioned, not because of rule breaking, but for religious reasons, and you open Pandora’s Box – and we all know this.

Don’t get angry. This angle is thus far isolated, should be mocked and we should quickly move on.

If you want the debate to take place, don’t lose focus and stick to the point: were tax laws, SFA and SPL rules broken, if so, was this an oversight, or was there a conspiracy to subvert the rules and earlier inquiries?

Perhaps most importantly, this is the time for other clubs and their fans to have their say.

Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney on CQN TONIGHT!

Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, and Celt for Change, Brendan Sweeny, Live chat on CQN tonight.

I’m absolutely delighted we have yet another Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig, on CQN tonight, as well as a one of the most influential fans in our history, Brendan Sweeny (who will cringe at reading that).

Brendan has researched and written Celtic: The Early Years, forward by Jim. It is the most incredible account of the how and why a football club was formed in Parkhead in 1888, and the seismic events which shaped its future during the Early Years.

Both will be on CQN tonight from 7:30, you can ask questions on the blog and chat to them. Ask Jim about those great times, his career after football, or what’s going on at the club now.

Brendan, as an integral part of Celts for Change, Jungle Bhoys and now Celtic Graves Society, has been a force of nature for the Celtic cause. This is also about as far into the limelight as he’s ever likely to emerge!

Premium Seats competition for Kilmarnock game on Saturday

Magners, Celtic’s main sponsor, are offering fans the chance to win a pair of Premium Seat tickets in the Jock Stein Stand to the match. All you have to do is answer the following question:

Who was Celtic manager when Kilmarnock won their first game in over half a century?

Email answer to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer in the email SUBJECT box.

Competition closes at 22:00 tonight, so this is a one day target!

On another subject, Ad hominem, def:

An ad hominem (Latin for “to the man” or “to the person”), is an attack on an argument made by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, rather than attacking the argument directly. When used inappropriately, it is a logical fallacy in which a claim or argument is dismissed on the basis of some irrelevant fact or supposition about the author or the person being criticised.

Just saying……..

Time for some Labi Siffre tunes.

Nobody has been more critical than me of our BOARD.

Getting rid of them may be the easy part.

Replacing them with folk with stomach for the fight may be more difficult.

The only option is to put pressure on the present lot.

And no matter how difficult some might find it to stomach, the way to do it is at the turnstile.

Make it plain to them that if they want THEM over principle, they can enjoy THEM in an empty stadium.

Hopefully, there will be some forceful, measured speaking from the floor at AGM.

I think it is best to keep your powder dry until after the appeal if there is one. I believe once that is past HMRC will move in as will others in Scottish football who are not happy at the going ons at Ibrokes or the SFA and the SPL the decent people in Scottish football surely cannot let this pass they like us will know if the whole mess is not cleaned up properly Scottish football will surely die. H.H.

  6. We’ve just posted a feature on Jim Craig who will be on CQN this evening from 7.30pm to answer your questions.

Brendan Sweeney will also be on the blog tonight and will be happy to answer questions on his new book Celtic The Early Years and on the Celts For Change movement that helped save our club in 1994.

Jim and Brendan will be happy to sign copies of the book tonight and will add personal dedications as requested.

You can buy the book at cqnbookstore.com and email any personal message to me and I will get this added. Your Book will be posted out tomorrow anywhere in world. This is a very special book that took Brendan five years to research and write.

Isn’t it just possible that the club know that they would only isolate themselves and us at a time when the tactic is to be part of what all the clubs are pushing for?

Celtic shouting about this on their own is what would play entirely into the hands of the people who want the SFA to do nothing.

By couching their statement in the terms they did, the club have the deniability required when this other despicable campaign gathers momentum – as it will do.

  8. Can I ask (with a straight face) if the DR listed the journalistic credentials and club loyalties of Mr Mooney prominently today?

Just so that the readers would appreciate his built in bias..

  9. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

RWE- yes; I thought if they had commissioned a piece from Paul67 it is unlikely that they would omit to mention his role as a legendary Celtic bhlogger..almost as unlikely as commissioning an article in the first place.

  10. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

On a happier note series 3 of ‘The Bridge’ starts on Saturday; wee Saga is flyin’solo after the actor who played Martin flounced.

  11. I thought that the piece in the record today was an attempt to get the club to say something, they are desperate to drag us down with them.

As NA2 said earlier, only in an openly sectarian society would they get away with publishing stuff like that.

I don’t have the answer, but what I do know is that money, or the lack of it, is all they will listen to, take that away from them, you will get what you want, end of.

  12. Awe_Naw @ 4.42.

You are right, that the statement was induced through reaction of the shareholders, and supporters, in the internet and new media age, I was mildly surprised we bothered, though.

I also agree that despite it being quite well deposited to merely reaffirm ‘Celtic’s surprise at LNS etc ’, it was reminiscent to our polite enquiry about the other type of physical, slight of hand, in the ICT semi final.

A well-worded and subtle ( for Celtic ) statement, caused a SMSM media led sectarian fuelled maelstrom, which was only stopped short in its tracks because of more serious world events.

Labelling Celtic, whether it be the board, the PLC, or the supporters, as ‘Old Firm’ is hurtful to Celtic supporters. Celtic Football Club successfully discarded the label years before, it was miraculously reinvented and brushed down as soon as they died. It’s always been your mantra to be very supportive of the team, but diametrically opposed to anything connected to the boardroom or it’s strategy, therefore you’ll forgive me for adopting a wait and see attitude, for a bit longer.

If the Celtic boardroom status transpires to be as ‘truthful’ as you maintain on these pages in relation to ‘old firmism ’ and what happened in 2012 and since ( it’s not finished and we don’t know all the facts yet ) at best, it will alter the way, in which I’ll continue to support Celtic, forever.

I think I’ve mentioned that before.

  13. Under 19s fitba – Ireland 0 Scotland 4 so Scotland qualify for the Elite round. Aiden Nesbitt got one, the others were scored by Ryan Hardie, Ross McCrorie and a guy called Kiltie – brilliant name for a Scotland player :)

  14. can a fan or fan group sue the SFA over lack of governance, deception, improper policy management etc… is this a viable avenue for a paying customer?

I was looking for something else and happened to spot the photo of Henryk and just read the bit underneath it without knowing what it was all about. Suitably chastised and I will know better in future. 0:-)

    Gotta love Zlatan.

  23. some of you might recall my posting of last month (missing the hoot’). i posted a photo of my eldest son at his daughters christening. since then charles attended scotlands super hospital to address an issue of an irregular drip of fluid (from the sinus area) going down his throat

it transpired that this was cranial fluid leaking from cracks(2) in his scull (the result of a car crash two years ago when he underwent brain surgery) the consequences of this leak could be meningitis or just as its easy to crush a cracked egg in your hand its almost impossible to crush a complete one

the surgeon also gave the prognosis that a part of charles’ brain had became trapped in one of these cracks and as its been trapped for neigh on two years the best solution was to burn it off and plug the cracks with effectively a skin graph from charles’ nasal passages

the procedure took 6hours and i received a call to say all went well, after calling round the family i unmuted the tv just to hear tom jones’ rendition of ‘you are my sunshine’…….and that fills me up under normal circumstances. anyway the bhoys home now, he’ll be off work for a month to let things knit
