Sky deal likely to fall if next season is delayed

283

While it is possible for Sky to broadcast their annual allotment of 48 SPFL games into a truncated period, i.e. October 2020 to May 2021, doing so would unravel the contract.  Under the current deal, negotiated while the world still had a largely functioning economy, Sky agreed to pay £666k (insert your own joke) for each live game for the next five years.

This money reflects the value Sky put on the audience and subsequent advertisers it expected to attract.  As we have touched on before, just about every asset class is worth less than it was before the crisis, which includes current and anticipated advertising revenues.  The size of our economy will be less going forward, which will correlate with advertising spend.

As we know to our cost, Sky pay enough money to choose when games are broadcast.  They are reluctant to put Scottish games on while they simultaneously broadcast games from England.  This splits their football audience and lowers the value of the product.

As it stands, there is probably no more than a 50% chance SPFL football can start season 2020-21 on time behind closed doors.  There is significantly less chance of ticket income that early in the season.  All of this makes next season’s Sky TV deal an absolute must for dozens of clubs across the four leagues.

For those in the bottom two leagues, £1k – £2k per week might be the difference between remaining in business in a semi-professional capacity or going bust.  The £3k – £10k per week available to Championship clubs is likely to be enough for a few of them to keep their heads off the chopping block for a few painful months.

Clubs in the top flight each receive over £20k per week.  That will make little difference to the likes of Hearts, where overheads are significantly higher, but it will go a long way at Hamilton and Ross County.

There is an oddity about football TV deals, they contain non-disclosure clauses.  No one outside of the SPFL board is supposed to know what the terms are, outside of a few agreed facts (usually just the fee and term).  The board cannot openly share details with member clubs, board members are not supposed to discuss the terms with others at their own club.

It is, therefore, likely that some clubs were unaware of the consequences they voted for when they voted against the SPFL’s resolution.  The League’s executives are legally unable to articulate the dangers, although I am sure they hope indiscrete leaks serve to do the job for them.  I suspect that may have happened to give Dundee pause for thought on Friday night.

If reports that Dundee are set to change their vote to Yes, the game here remains solvent in theory only for a while yet, but I’m not convinced it will make any difference to the final picture.  The short list of Third Lanark, Airdrieonians, Gretna and Rangers is set to become a lot longer.

Wasn’t it great to hear Kelty Hearts manager Barry Ferguson say, “we’ll take it”, when the Lowland League ended the campaign and made them champions?  None of this ‘null and void’ nonsense for Barry!

  1. So is it the case that Dundees original NO Vote MUST stand…Legally…….DESPITE Clubs having 28 days to vote, during which ( in theory), any number of them could have also changed their minds ?

Part of Partick Thistles “argument” has been made public today by their Legal Rep and thats the part that argued that ” There was NOT enough time given by the SPFL for Clubs to digest matters”…or words to that effect…

It clearly stated on the Voting Paper that Clubs should provide their vote by Friday 10th April at 5pm IF POSSIBLE ?

There MUST have been some WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION of the ” 28 Days” to ensure the Clubs themselves were aware of that “Time Frame”….as I cant believe that the SPFL had kept the 28 Days, “Rule” all to themselves and never told anyone…or did they ?

If you purchase an item from a store…on the receipt ( most receipts)..will give the customer 28 days or so to return goods that they have found to be at fault…or that they have simply CHANGED their minds about ?

If the SPFL HAD made the ” 28 Days” clear to all Clubs…then I dont see how Dundee can be denied the right to change their minds ?

Maybe Im wrong of course ?

After sevco dies, and given its recent lurch to the DUP/UDA demographic, Third Klanark might be an apt name for the next incarnation of the strange Ibrox beast slouching towards Govan to be born.

    ………………………..

Third Klanark. That is so good. Very clever. You’ve made me laugh out loud. I’ll be using that! Thank you 🤣

As an ordinary terracing foot soldier, this article was an interesting read. The Great and the Good don’t often draw back the curtain to invite inspection.

To me, Paul67 is providing hauners to Doncaster as he fights off the dogs. Exculpatory testimony about the written and verbal narrative presented by the SPFL Board last week.

    Hope it works.

Scoddland should have 2 professional leagues. It would no bad thing if some of these teams fell by the wayside. it would also reduce the power and influence of the SFA.

Well whatever you think of them DUNDEE have played a blinder.

It might not work out for them but they have got everyone at one another’s throats.

16 team league looks ok to me .No split and no plastic pitches.

  6. Fairhill Bhoy,

I did reply,to be honest i dont know,

but my guess would be any bets that dont

have a finish would be void yeah.

Bets on say Celtic/Rangers winning the treble

would settle on Celtic winning the League Cup,

    Rangers bets would be losers.

  8. WDH – I first tasted Mochar on the slopes of the Golan Heights in the early nineties- seek it out when I can. Not only a great wine but brings back surreal memories of working with a tech company based on a kibbutz in Galilee.

ICT guy on Radio Scotland on Saturday confirmed that Friday was a request in order to try and expedite an outcome but was not enforceable as the resolutions required the usual 28 days as per rules.

This makes me wonder why those against it or now argiung for more time to consider things didn’t just hold off voting.

  10. Oh what a tangled web THEY weave while Celtic just sit back enjoying the vista. Just sit back and let them all make statement (s) and accusations before turning and devouring one and other.

Our club is strong and can ride out this storm, other clubs? Need to wait and see but Sevco are sliding into the abyss. The sooner the better for Scottish football.

  11. Usually on here we’re sympathetic when people are in danger of losing their jobs – but lots wanting a cull of the leagues which would have that affect on their staff.

Having said that we have too many professional teams.

  12. FB,

I had a few texts with him too after i seen him post on the other side,

I thought Gerry Britton became a lawyer after he stopped laying football, a lawyer who doesn’t read something as important as the vote last week ? Hmmm

  20. I would imagine any league reconstruction would cast just as much doubt on the validity of the new sky contract as mush as a delayed start would.

  21. Paul67 –

I know you put a lot of time and effort into maintaining the site. Given that, surely you’d prefer it to be accessible to everyone who wants to either read it or contribute to it.

I’ve now given up trying to access it on my iPhone – the benefit I get from reading about all things Celtic pales in significance to the frustration involved in trying to access the pages.

I’m almost there now with the laptop as well. The number of ads is just overwhelming and the number of clicks it takes to get to reading the comments is just not worth it anymore.

Yes, I know users have tried things like duckduckgo etc, but I shouldn’t have to install software on my PC just to read a blog. Back in the day when you were so against having ads on the site, I was one of those readers who encouraged you to go down this route, or charging readers a nominal amount to participate.

At the end of the day it’s your site to do whatever you want to do with it, but from a long time user perspective it’s just got ridiculously difficult to use.

  22. Dundee are doing what I would expect them to do, try to get a good deal for self. However, I dont think it will work and so the vote will fall. So long as nill and void is not passed through I will be happy and I dont think it will be passed given the damage it would do.

  25. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

What I like about the whole SPFL loans idea and the noise that it is an alternative and whats never been discussed is that granting of loans is not obligatory, the SPFL can say no.

Now why would the SPFL say No?

Well, having accounts showing the business is loss making and in danger of folding is likely to be considered too high a risk :)

As discussed to yesterday, I wonder how many clubs would be considered too high a risk, or put it another way are there any other clubs, apart from Celtic, that qualify as low risk and need a loan?

  26. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Have some clubs applied for loans and been knocked back because they are unacceptable risk?

Could any of the clubs who have decided to scupper the resolution included in that number?

  27. Wow!

  28. Canamalar

One would assume that the normal rules of providing loans would apply. The SPFL hasn’t got enough money to save sevco.

  29. prestonpans bhoys on

Obviously nothing happening in Scottish football as Reporting Scotland give it a miss

  30. When was the loan facilty introduced.? Wouldn’t be with the arrival of the new huns by any chance.
