Sky deal likely to fall if next season is delayed

283

While it is possible for Sky to broadcast their annual allotment of 48 SPFL games into a truncated period, i.e. October 2020 to May 2021, doing so would unravel the contract.  Under the current deal, negotiated while the world still had a largely functioning economy, Sky agreed to pay £666k (insert your own joke) for each live game for the next five years.

This money reflects the value Sky put on the audience and subsequent advertisers it expected to attract.  As we have touched on before, just about every asset class is worth less than it was before the crisis, which includes current and anticipated advertising revenues.  The size of our economy will be less going forward, which will correlate with advertising spend.

As we know to our cost, Sky pay enough money to choose when games are broadcast.  They are reluctant to put Scottish games on while they simultaneously broadcast games from England.  This splits their football audience and lowers the value of the product.

As it stands, there is probably no more than a 50% chance SPFL football can start season 2020-21 on time behind closed doors.  There is significantly less chance of ticket income that early in the season.  All of this makes next season’s Sky TV deal an absolute must for dozens of clubs across the four leagues.

For those in the bottom two leagues, £1k – £2k per week might be the difference between remaining in business in a semi-professional capacity or going bust.  The £3k – £10k per week available to Championship clubs is likely to be enough for a few of them to keep their heads off the chopping block for a few painful months.

Clubs in the top flight each receive over £20k per week.  That will make little difference to the likes of Hearts, where overheads are significantly higher, but it will go a long way at Hamilton and Ross County.

There is an oddity about football TV deals, they contain non-disclosure clauses.  No one outside of the SPFL board is supposed to know what the terms are, outside of a few agreed facts (usually just the fee and term).  The board cannot openly share details with member clubs, board members are not supposed to discuss the terms with others at their own club.

It is, therefore, likely that some clubs were unaware of the consequences they voted for when they voted against the SPFL’s resolution.  The League’s executives are legally unable to articulate the dangers, although I am sure they hope indiscrete leaks serve to do the job for them.  I suspect that may have happened to give Dundee pause for thought on Friday night.

If reports that Dundee are set to change their vote to Yes, the game here remains solvent in theory only for a while yet, but I’m not convinced it will make any difference to the final picture.  The short list of Third Lanark, Airdrieonians, Gretna and Rangers is set to become a lot longer.

Wasn’t it great to hear Kelty Hearts manager Barry Ferguson say, “we’ll take it”, when the Lowland League ended the campaign and made them champions?  None of this ‘null and void’ nonsense for Barry!

Agreed Bada. Started to watch it last week. Finished Series 1 in a couple of days and am now on Series 2. The frenetic pace of series 1 reminded me of Breaking Bad. I’ve also started to re-watch Justified on Prime. Brilliant.

  15. I can understand the fear that Ashley might want to beat Dave King by gaining control of the club.

I can see no sign that he wants to be a philanthropic Sugar Daddy- he wasn’t for Newcastle. His spending approach ensured Premier League Survival annd no more.

In the seven seasons before Ashley arrived at Newcastle, United finished top half on four occasions and only Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester United achieved that more times in those seven years.

Under Mike Ashley Newcastle finished fifth in 2011/12 and then just scraped it by ending up tenth after a dismal second half of the season last year.

In the 12 seasons prior to Ashley’s takeover in 2007 they reached two domestic cup finals.

They also progressed to an impressive five domestic or European cup semi-finals and achieved four top four finishes in that time.

Since Ashley arrived 12 years ago they have managed :-

Zero Top 4 finishes (compared with 4 in the previous 12 seasons)

One season in Europe (10 in the previous 12 sesons)

Zero Domestic Cup Finals (2 in 12 previously)

Zero Domestic or European semi-finals (cf with 5)

Two Dom or Eur Q-finals (cf with 15)

Highest League position- 5th ( prev. 2nd twice)

    Average PL position – 13th (cf 7th)

    Relegation from PL – 2 (cf 0)

Meanwhile in 2019 it was reported that:-

Newcastle United have made a profit in seven of the past eight seasons – but the Magpies are heavily reliant on Premier League TV money in order to remain in the black.

Only five English clubs have posted higher cumulative profits than Newcastle’s £79million since 2010, according to respected financial bloggers Swiss Ramble .

Looks to me like Ashley owned Newcastle to make money. It may be different in Scotland as you fear but why would Ashley invest a lot in playing staff just in order to win a cup or two, or even a league while treading water in any Euro campaigns. There is just no return to be had from this club and no justification for investing in it.

It might be useful as a money laundering exercise though

  16. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Teuchtar, thanks for uploading that game. . Beforehand there was a rock against Rangers event at the QM Union in Glasgow University organised by the The Glasgow Uni CSC . They even had a video of our win in Amsterdam the previous month to show before leaving for the game.

As a football match it was the best I have been at in over 20 years of going to games against the original Ibrox club. They were unbeaten in the league up to that match with the press saying this was their season,in their dazzling new strip (yeugh) . After that match they fell to pieces. We should have won the league bur didn’t only winning the league cup.

    Ach, Surely you’ve got a wee 20 mins spare?https://youtu.be/Y-9_GJmtCIs

    ……….

I watched that game again a few days ago as i was in the Jungle with some mates, and to be honest I had forgotten how well the Huns actually played that day, so for The Celts to come out on Top was extra special.

I went with some of my Fitba team mates and the one who had the car was a Hun. It was raining all day in Glasgow and our hun friend had a ticket for the Hun end, but we welcomed his offer to take us to Celtic Park and then back into the Toon.

One other aspect of this game was that apparently some Celtic supporters were NOT too happy with Murdo MacLeod, due to his LACK of celebration after scoring what proved to be the winner ?

Murdo was quoted in the Celtic View and papers afterwards…” I didnt have the energy to celebrate properly…I was too KNACKERED” !

Listening to Arthur Montford after the game on that clip…he wasnt too happy and almost described it as “Dull etc”…..I think he was gutted cos the Huns got beat, although he was usually keen to let everyone know that he was a Morton fan….like a later day Chic Young and his love of St Mirren ?

In fact, the game flowed from end to end and it could easy have ended 5-5 all.

  20. Re the SPFL Vote….

I am struggling to understand how a wee Club like Dundee FC can offer other clubs “Inducements” as has been claimed ?

The ONLY “inducement” that they can surely offer is their own proposals for League reconstruction to be tied in with any “Yes” Vote that they may bring to the table ?

Or am I missing something here ?

Hello again all you young rebels.

G’day BIG JIMMY and CANMAN only two bhoys up early this bright

    early Wed. morn.

Must be good back in Scotia, getting up early and wait eagerly for

the latest bit of bombast and bluster from the deluded hordes.

Here in Oz , i must admit i awaken early and anticipate a good read

on the comp. and i suppose it’s the same with thousands of tims

    worldwide.

See big Victor saying he has unfinished business with Celtic as he

just loves the fans and the club, a career in downward spiral, or worth

    a punt?

In my view, ask him if he’ll take a drop in salary, just like Lenny did

to be with the club he loves.

Other news… Looks as though the lockdown in Oz is working, but no

easing of restrictions, although a bit of dispute between the state

premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, and the country’s prime minister

over return to school, strange, but suppose it might be a bit like the

mayor of New York and president trumpet.

Meanwhile wee Grace was on vid ” Papa ! i’m so bored what can i do ”

” Get a baw darling, and show the wee mhan how to kick it right. ”

Actually i’m surprised he was able to hit the ball so hard lol.

Made the mistake of not reading back, i was referring to the 4-2 game

when Johnny Doyle was sent off.

As regards Arthur Montford , i believe he was a Morton fan, but i only

base that on the fact i never heard him say a bad word about Celtic.

Not like a hun would miss a chance if he had a mic.

    H.H . Mick

  24. MELBOURNE MICK…

Sorry but you are confusing the game ended 3-2 to Celtic in 1982, with the 4-2 game in 1979, which we won the league with 10 men after wee Johnny had been sent off for kicking the Hun Alex McDonald.

The 3-2 that has been posted was on a Staurday afternoon kick off 3pm.

By 1982 Johnny Doyle had passed away in late 1981.
