So-called spivs only ones to cough up again

1057

It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers.  There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner.  These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.

The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces.  Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.

‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift.  Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.

It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in.  Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.

Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’  The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.

Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

You’re obviously an expert on HS2 so could you tell me will it reduce journey times between Glasgow and London?

You are now insulting my intelligence, if you do not know that the HS2 is not crossing the Scottish border, I suggest you go back to what you where doing before you came on this blog. Ignorance is no excuse. You will probably have your capitalist way eventually, I pray it is not to the deprivation of my Country, which I believe, is the greatest Country in the world, which has been desecrated by WM billionaires for their own pleasure over the past centuries.

Nothing wrong in the article except the omission of the part where the OO sought a judicial review of the decisions to restrict parades. The Labour Party having been the only one to attempt action, were forced to back down. Mr. Matheson met with the OO to apologise and climb down.

If Humza Yousaf asked Mr. Matheson why, it was only with a view to causing embarrassment (and he is entitled to do so) rather than out of any desire his party has or has shown to tackle this scourge.

This was one area where bi-partisan support would have been welcome but like the OBaF Act replacing Jack McConnell’s lower key and only partially effective educative approach to tackling sectarianism, the SNP wanted all the policies they supported to be sporting Tartan paint only.

  12. Talking about young Tony Watt,

I had the pleasure of picking him up a couple of Thursday nights ago in my Taxi.

As he was going from Queen St to Coatbridge we had a chance to have a decent wee chat, and may I say,

What a well spoken and mannerly young chap he was.

He was just back from a wee break in

Marbella where he had gone after his

    Season ended in Belgium.

He had enjoyed his time there and learned a lot from the experience.

It was difficult for him being away from home but he genuinely seemed to have stuck it out as he said himself it was a learning curve which would only benefit him in the long run.

He was very much looking forward to knuckling down and hoping to play for Celtic for a long time to come.

He was eager to stress that it was his own decision to ask for a loan move abroad as he was getting nowhere sitting on a bench.

He very rarely looks at any of the forums but is kept up to date by his friends about what garbage is spouted on them by people who know nothing about him.

I wished him well for his future and came away very impressed by a young man who seemed very driven to achieve his targets in life.

He is also a very good tipper btw!

    Best of luck Tony!

I don’t want to upset Hamitontim any further so I’ll refrain from commenting on that.

It does seem though that while HS2 doesn’t extend to the border nonetheless journey times between Glasgow and London will be reduced quite substantially.

    Puzzling, isn’t it?

It seems that you only have to improve part of a railway line for everyone who uses it to benefit.

I never said she is against the Welfare state. On the contrary she clearly benefited from it when she was unemployed before she struck it big and received ore state assistance.

I don’t agree with that, I said so.

    Deal with it.

You don’t appear to disagree with those things, just twist my words. I think we’ll leave it at that and by leave it I mean on a permanent basis.

I have no wish to speak with you ever again. I find your loathsome anti-Scottish vitriol and your constant attacks on any poster who even timidly suggests they might vote YES to be in the same manner as the so called cyber nats you attack so freely. You are obviously the flip side of the coin on that one.

As for your personal attack on my ability to do my job….. well if that’s the best you can muster in the immortal words of Ron Burgundy – you stay classy San Diego.

Now if you will excuse me I have to go to bed because I have exam students to teach in the morning to help them get a better life than the one they have and improve their prospects because I know the value of helping other people and I know you don’t get there on your own and unlike some people out there I don’t forget that fact.

I was doing it because I believe in it and nothing else but this has gone on long enough from me and I will let it be out of respect for other people who want to you know, talk about Celtic.

Wrong, the HS2 is proposed to firstly, Birmingham, and then Leeds. There are no plans to take it further. If, at all, it will be Newcastle and then……….. By probably, 2050 Edinburgh. The only way to reduce travel time between Glasgow and london, is to fly. Of course you will know that. KTF

  21. SP @ All over the place tonight on the subject of JKR

Your analysis of her and her life story is just shockingly bad.

JKR’s family and upbringing was and is very middle class.

Marriage breakdown and caring for her child turned her into a member of the distressed gentle folk. I fail to see how her benefits position would have changed vis a vis the ConDemNations benefit cuts.

Then you have her later inputs into public life where she viscerated Dave over his £150 marriage bounty. Fair play to her as her analysis is focused to the point of destroying his argument without getting out of second gear.

She has a history of thinking of others, whether it is the UK film industry or medical research and you want to destroy her reputation on the subject of a donation to the No Borders / Better Together / Labour United campaign.

What utter tripe. She is just supporting a cause she believes in and a cause she has benefitted from. She came north to get family support. That is what happens when the kingdom is united. No questions over health care, new benefit arrangements, questions over benefit tourism just a case you rock up and all it takes is a few phone calls.

Obviously I have reservations over her situation in the past.

Her family should have moved to Glesga and not Auld Reekie.

    Salt n’ Sauce — I ask you.

However she is the one who has a consistent narrative.

You are the one who is pushing water uphill to question her motives.

SFTB here is the original Herald article, sorry not convinced Mr Matheson did not play politics for a personal and political advantage, personally i hate the the religious card being played by any party, politics as always makes for strange bedfellows ? maybe Mr Matheson sleeps with that bedspread you mentioned earlier tonight………………..

    http://www.heraldscotland.com/politics/opinion/council-chief-citys-parade-plan-is-flawed.17535913

Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, was greeted with applause when he told a hustings of around 100 members of the Orange Order that he would “hold his hands up” and admit a groundbreaking approach to reducing marches in the city was flawed.

But last night the head of the organisation representing Scotland’s rank-and-file police officers said it would be “perverse” to encourage further parades, while the Orange Order said it now expects Mr Matheson to deliver on his promise.

The pledge comes after Strathclyde chief constable Stephen House championed Glasgow’s parades policy as the one best reflecting the police approach to marches, while encouraging other west of Scotland councils to follow the city’s lead.

Mr Matheson, whose Labour administration was returned last Friday with an unexpectedly large majority, said the council should have done more to consult the Orange Order and he promised a senior councillor would oversee a review.

He also told the meeting – held before last week’s election – that a vote for Labour would help safeguard the union and prevent the SNP using Glasgow as a stepping stone to independence.

The council has repeatedly hailed its approach to parades as a success, with almost all disputes with march organisers resolved before the event.

Introduced 18 months ago, the policy was aimed at reducing marches through the city centre and restricting start and finish times amid concerns over the impact on public resources, businesses and communities.

Climate protesters and trade unions have had demonstrations curtailed or re-routed, along with loyalist and Irish republican parades.

According to council figures, the number of parades by Protestant loyal orders in Glasgow outstrips the total number of marches in Londonderry and Belfast combined.
