It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers. There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner. These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.
The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces. Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.
‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift. Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.
It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in. Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.
Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’ The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.
Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.
Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

If there are to be moments of true football genius, we need this wee man to find his mojo!

Sorry if i missed it but not one yes voter, from my experience very keen to tell everyone why should vote yes, has addressed any of the questions i put bout what life wud be like for ordinary guy like me in independent Scotland. Some bluster bout OO who are irrelevance but nothin bout tax, wages, prices, the real stuff that matters to the ordinary voter.
That was a waste of a train journey.
Or a waste of my failing eyesight reading the mince in the blog.
A t least I got to listen to sneevins on sports desk.

You do not need to want Alex Salmond to be PM of Scotland to want independence but he is far more palatable than David Cameron or George Osbourne.
Scotlands shame – there are no certainties in independence. I would hope for a left of centre government putting more progressive policies in place over time. I would want a fairer, more progressive taxation system (no party is actually offering that at the moment apart from the Greens). Scotland has the potential to be a very wealthy country but I would want that wealth distributed for everyone’s benefit within Scotland. Having economic policy decide by the economic conditions of the South of England is extremely harmful to Scotland and the rest of the UK. Having more of those levers of powers in our control is the basis to move forward.
Morning all. Pleasant down here at the moment. Carole is saying that we can expect rain soon. It was always thus. Summer, what summer??? Let’s hope we can enjoy it.
I enjoyed the John Hartson on BBC Wales last night. I hope too to enjoy the World Cup. Looks like Blatter is going to enjoy continuing support at FIFA.
(That’s enough enjoying. Ed.)

Hi justafan. My general point to you was to point out that democracy is just that. A majority vote. We have that now, with all it’s votes, independence won’t change that. As for compulsorary voting well of course the SNP want that. They also want to outlaw catholocism.
Plus de change…..
Two truly horrible posts.
Blatant lies about SNP wanting to outlaw capitalism. Reasoning that is incomprehensible to me.

A remarkable post this
” good question which I don’t have an answer for, and it is much worse imo than 50 years ago.
I remember the 12th of July march and that was that, although I could be wrong.
Now we have a marching season that goes on for months and causes massive inconvenience and trouble is often the result as the drunken hordes run rampage.”
Having spent so long on this site telling us how much Scotland has progressed vis a vis sectarianism. Here you are saying the opposite.
Can you even live with your self?????
Conflicting opinions within a person’s thoughts are quite normal in my experience and shouldn’t attract such hatred.
Paradoxes exist!
Question for techie folk

Good morning and you know full well I’m not a Nat.
You didn’t answer my question about whether you really believe an independent Scotland would be to right of the present government
No more posts as I’ve other things to do.

Mr Maynard
Runs tonight. He is very well, and the only question mark is whether he will get the trip, but they think he should. Something was amiss on his last run. At a big price he’s definitely worth trying each way. Small stakes are all that’s needed at the price he is.
Good luck if you have a go, but as always , bet what you can afford to lose.
Thanks BT, not hearing anything on this appointment ( Celtic obviously) :-)

I’ve not seen your questions but I get the gist , nor am I a yes voter, but I think your questions can be asked ahead of every general election when you choose a government.
The SNP have given their view on these things in their white paper, Scotland’s Future but the problem for me is that policies on taxation, pensions, prices, monetary policy, etc will depend on the government elected; not independence per se.
This is the minutiae of government.
The way I see it Independence or Unionism is about bigger things.
The constitution – written or not, checks and balances;
Parliament – number of chambers, elected or appointed;
Judiciary – separate and independent from the executive;
Executive – responsibility/size/role/laissez-faire/social;
Monarchy or republic;
The type of society – welfare, education, health.
Just wondering like but is emdy else not getting into this World Cup? I normally look forward to these big events (Mexico 70 being my favourite – giving age away), especially watching Ingurlandshire getting gubbed but I’ll happily give this one a miss. I find it difficult to reconcile the brutally dished out to the Brazilian demonstrators and sitting down to watch football matches that will provide obscene profits for the corrupt FIFA and their corporate partners. I’m just surprised at the lack of reaction from supporters in general to the crap that’s being dished out on Brazil’s poorest and most disadvantaged to pay for this extravagance. It’s true what the great man once said – “Football, It’s a funny ol’ game”.

At one time the only chance you had to see foreign players was in international games, and for players from anywhere other than Europe the only chance of seeing them was at the world cup.
Now all the top players are based in Europe and games from ever country in the world are available to watch in your living room.
It’s no wonder the competition has lost a lot of its allure.
Don’t forget that Bertie Auld will be on the blog tomorrow from 1pm…
Reading Yogi Bare…and looking for help.
First photo of a team shows the old Shamrock strip.
A reserve team photo of c 1961.
I recognise most of the players, but not all.
Back row: Mackay, O Neill, Haffey, Jack ? Cushley, Cattenach ?
Front Row. Yogi, .? .? Divers, ?
No doubt someone can fill in the blanks.
Think one might be Vincent Ryan?
Remember going to Hampden to see Yogi in one of his early games.
Evening Citizen early edition had a pic of him with the headline The Nimble Collossus !

It doesn’t sick well with me either…I saw some shocking reports from Brazil about the homeless kids, it truly brings tears to your eyes.
FIFA….are a total disgrace to humanity.
To me…these abuses and corruption are symbols of rampant capitalism.
Until people understand how to defeat it….it will always happen

I’m with you on that,mate.
Apart from the things you mention,the times don’t suit my work pattern.
Also getting extremely miffed with sitting down to watch big games only to be disappointed.
I very much doubt that it’s only we two plus DBBIA,I think a few have had it with FIFA.
There could quite easily be a revolution in Brazil…The sheer mass of the people in insurrection could never be stopped….Think Paris between 1789 and 1795…Its very possible.
For what else can you do….if your children are starving.
I think we will see mass demonstrations all over Brazil……and if it comes to a head, there will be a revolution in Brazil…..The conditions are ripe.
