So-called spivs only ones to cough up again

1057

It appears that the so-called spivs are once again the only people likely to put their hands in their pockets to fund the coming season’s shortfall at Newco Rangers.  There has been a campaign for much of this year to drive the club into the gutter, although on this occasion no one has accused Celtic fans, the SFA, HMRC or various imaginary enemies of acting in an underhand manner.  These moves were all the work of formerly loyal Rangers men, who wanted ownership of Newco on the cheap, or some kind of influence thereafter.

The ‘spivs’ have not been intimidated or been blackmailed into handing over the club to hostile forces.  Instead they are prepared to invest again, stay the course and see a return on their money.

‘Spivs’ is an unnecessarily pejorative term but if money comes in from the variety of hedge funds and offshore entities it will not be a gift.  Neither was the initial investment of £5.5m, or the subsequent monies raised at the IPO.

It’s too late to complain about who owns the club, or that a collection on wealthy fans could have bought the assets of Rangers on the cheap when Charles Green stepped in.  Campaigns to undermine the club will not bring about a dramatic change, they will only weaken an already painfully weak entity.

Two years ago someone inside the game told me ‘the Rangers you know are dead, whether they phoenix or not.’  The outfit which exists now will forever be a bit-part player, which even Dave King recognises is an untenable commercial proposition.

Remember, Tommy Gemmell, Bertie Auld and John Hughes will be signing copies of their books at the Celtic Store in Argyle St from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday. Take a camera.
And before that, Bertie Auld will be live on CQN from 1pm this Friday. Expect anecdote overload.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

The whole referendum circus has been a boon to the newspaper industry (lots of stories that are easy and cheap to cover) and the polling companies.

    They must be loving it.

For the rest of us I think we’re just grateful these things only happen once in a generation.

It’s true what the great man once said – “Football, It’s a funny ol’ game”.

beg to differ; what THE great man said was “football without fans is nothing”!!

…can’t be ersed with this WC… gone are the days when i used to look forward to it.

I didn’t say that the paper was pro-independence. It certainly hasn’t been in the past.

I merely drew attention to the words involved. Overall,I thought the article was up to the paper’s usual standards.

Which isn’t meant as a compliment.

Been busy, so just read Paul’s article………it really is revealing when you consider that, unlike (even) hearts, for example, none of these great loyal rangers (we are the people) ‘wealthies’ clubbed together to buy their ‘beloved’ Club……you know why, because they ALL know there is no way back…….and even the biggest vulture in the pack, ming, has gone all quiet ….Tick Tock …….. Once we get them out of the way, we can all enjoy our sport of football……no oldco = no hatred, no violence, no sectarian bigotry, no need to resist……just joy…I CANNOT WAIT…

Boaby. These figures are similar to our own figs and we have been trying to figure it out why there has been such a wide disparity.

My 17 year old bhoy has represented the Yes campaign in debates in two Ayrshire schools this week against a Labour MSP and a Labour official, and he has won both resoundingly.

    Eg: Garnock Academy

    Start. No: 70% Yes: 30%

    End. No: 46%. Yes: 54%

These figures were audited by an independent adjudicator

  9. Right, what would I prefer to talk about- A referendum due in September or a WC starting today. I think I have discovered my first ever no-brainer.

So, who can explain the rules of crc’s WC predictor to me. I’ve tried crc but English may not be his first language :-)

The difficulty I have is over predictions for the last 16 matches through to the finals.

Having read the rules, it seems we are being asked to predict the score over 90 minutes in these matches (as opposed to the AET score or the after penalties score). But we have been asked to select a winner and not to indicate a drawn game.

So, if you think it will be drawn after 90 minutes but you want to nominate a winner and get the correct 90 minute score, what do you do?

  15. I was thinking back to the WC of 1970 and the marvelous Brazil side.

I can vividly recall Pele, Gerson, Tostao, Jair, Rivelino, Carlos Alberto, and Clodoaldo. I can only add goalkeeper Felix as a vague memory of another player from that team.

Without googling, can any other CQNrs recall another Brazilian from that team?

It lets you now that even the heroes and the gods can be parochial. We can occasionally find a European football fan of a certain age who will wax lyrical about Himmy Hohnstone but it is rare to find fans who recall Tommy Gemmell, Bobby Murdoch or Tommy Gemmell outside these isles.

Once we get the 1970 answers, I will go through the other WCs and see who I can recall from the winning teams.

I had a go at the Predictor last night and my understanding is that there’s going to be a tandem system for the knock-out stage.

The organisers will send us the actual last 16 for which we’ll do score predictions in a fortnight’s time.

Our group game predictions feed through teams who qualify and points are just on guessing the teams who reach each stage thereafter.

I’m open to correction, of course.

  22. setting free the bears

For me, the 1982 side outmatches the 1970 one in terms of sheer footballing artistry.

    Socrates, Falcao, Zico, Junior, Eder…

    Nothing today comes close.

Unfortunately, their loss to a cynical Italian side in the semi-final ended the battle of cavalier v realism, and Brazil went down the road all other countries have been going down since. The hollow victory by penalties over Italy in 1994 symbolized this hard-bitten approach.

Yes, there have been flashes of individual brilliance since then, but in terms of philosophies, we are left with Mourinho-style opportunistic tactics against the Spanish, possession-based strategy (which is itself a puny, Cruyff-inspired offshoot of the Brazilian ideal).

    Barkeep! Another bourbon.

  23. Anyone got youngsters in the Young Hoops club?

Had a look at the form online and it’s £15 for a 0-3 years membership. I should have put LB Jr in it when he was born and I am annoyed with myself that I didn’t but after looking at the form I remembered why. Posting the form costs £20.95 aplying in person at the shop is £15. I don’t really grudge the extra fiver but if I can do it in the Livi club store I will swing by there when I am out visiting my folks one Saturday.

I have emailed off to the address on the form but wondered if anyone has registered any of their kids recently and if they were able to do it outwith the club superstore at Paradise.

I’m really surprised there is no online option. Posting cheques and membership forms is really a bit old fashioned in this day and age with the technology available. I can’t help thinking we are missing out on young Hoopsters by not having that available.

    Cheers in advance.
