So which journos were secretly being paid by Oldco?

622

How many people working as ‘journalists’ in Scottish football were secretly on the payroll of Oldco Rangers (or Rangers International, for that matter)?  Is this common practice in newspapers, did the Daily Record know about it? Wonder how they will play the news story…

Any suggestions as to who else might’ve been on the oldco/Sevco payroll?  Any ex-Celtic players?

Most of us have spent the last season trying to value Victor Wanyama.  If he goes, it’s important we achieve as high a price as possible, not for the money itself, but Victor’s value will be reflected in the value of the rest of the squad – and it’s important we move our player trading up the food chain.

SPL football doesn’t count towards a valuation but the Champions League does, and Victor’s five group games (less so the Juventus games) are the basis of whatever figures will be offered.

    Good Afternoon All.

Paul 67 asks a good question given the revelations from Charlotte the harlot re Mark Hately.

However, there are different questions to be asked which I think may cause greater concern when looked at together.

Clearly, we have a case of former Rangers players at least being paid to further the PR of the Rangers Adminsitration whilst supposedly writing for a national newspaper.

I am not certain that anyone has ever said that Hately’s column was independent yet at the same time I am not aware of the Daily Record ever saying that or openly carrying a rider to say that Mark Hately is a paid employee of Rangers Football Club.

    However I digress.

The Sports Editor at the daily Record this many a year was of course James Traynor — a man who has since joined the payroll staff at Ibrox, but who long before that date seemed to be spouting a pro rangers agenda in many of his columns and who, of course, would not go into print without running certain things by Craig Whyte.

Quite separately, Charlotte has leaked e-mails which show Jack Irvine trying to manipulate the media by putting a Rangers spin on things and openly asking others if they can find a story which spreads some dirt Celtic’s way.

Further, there are e-mail which openly boast that certain journalists will “Defend the clubs position” or “set out the club’s position” and so on in forthcoming articles at the request of the club.

Now, I wonder if it is time to ask some awkward questions about the so called independence of the press in light of these revelations.

However, before we all head off to barrack the journo’s stop and consider this.

There is clear evidence that Rangers PLC were paying money to individuals who were not employees by way of EBT’s.

Walter Smith and Graeme Souness– both of whom have been known to give press interviews— were paid money at times when they apparently were not employees of the football club.

No explanation has ever been provided for these payments being made at the relevant times.

Further, the official accounts of Rangers PLC state categorically and that EBT payments were made in the course of the financial year to employees and “other service providers”.

Is it not about time someone in footballing authority asked who these other “service providers” were and what service they provided?

So far we have people at Ibrox paying journalists, managers of other clubs, International managers, executives of other clubs ( CO ) who may also just happen to hold office at the SFA.

Can absolutely no one see why there would be a conflict of interest in any of this and why independence of both press and sport has been totally and utterly compromised?

Also remember all those MP’s who were outed simply because of their “failure to declare” an interest or payments from third parties etc?

Well how does Scottish Football sit with honesty and transparency?

  2. EDB, real life has a habit of intruding on our Celtic bliss every now and then, just to remind us there’s more importanbt things than football.

I seem to remember that at the start of his expose documentry Mark Daly listing ,players managers, officials and I thought he also made mention of referees.

But there was no more about MIBs in his programme.

  23. bamboo,

he did not mention refs but it was one of the tabs on the list in the background, that bit of missing onfo got me excited then disappointed he never followed up on it, big tease

Mark Daly’s programme said 111 sub-trusts were set up. But on the BBC website, only 72 are listed. Makes you wonder who the other 39 might have been…..

  27. Surely if James McArthur is valued at 15 million and McCarthy at 20 million. They got relegated

Celtic should be looking for at least that for Wanyama? Unless we inserted a 25 percent and 30 percent sell on clause

  28. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Sincere condolences and prayers to Edb and his family on their great loss.

  29. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan @ 14:01,

Once again you ask the pertinent questions, I remember when the press used to argue when Celtic supporters complained of bias that Rangers fans complained also, so they must be maintaining a balance.

As yourself and Paul alludes too, there seems to be no change in culture with the NewCo, you have already mentioned J Traynor and then there’s Gordon Smith, after a curious innings as SFA CEO with OldCo getting the benefit of a lot of doubts, he joined Rangers as Director of Football. Does a short spell as assistant manager of St Mirren many years previous give you the relevant Footballing Experience for that role? And there doesn’t seem to be much evidence of Directing either.

I’m not sure that you’re going to get the answers you seek but the fact that several of these characters were contributing to our National Broadcaster while taking payments from Rangers and acting as proxies for their PR company could make it worth putting the point to the BBC.
