Some consistency from Uefa, please

819

Of all the supporter-related offenses Uefa are disciplining football clubs on at the moment the use of lasers annoys me most (with the appropriate caveat for health and safety matters).

Racism, health and safety violations, violence flares are all appropriate reasons to sanction a club but it’s always bothered me that Uefa seem to let the continental fashion for shining powerful lasers into the faces of opposing players and managers was not tackled appropriately.

I was, therefore, pleased to hear Uefa disciplined Olympiacos for, among a rich litany of offenses, their fans pointing a laser at Anderlecht players during their recent Champions League game.  The Greek club have been ordered to close the more colourful part of their stadium for their last 16 game against Manchester United.

It will surprise few of us that despite the Greeks being sanctioned for using lasers, Milan have gone unpunished, despite their fans pointing lasers at Celtic players during our recent drubbing.

These games are supervised and televised from multiple angles.  If the use of lasers attracts a punishment, and it should, the rules must apply without fear or favour.

Everyone who asked to book a ticket or table for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Party should have received an email regarding payment in the last day.  If you have not received an email, get in touch right away (CQNbooks@gmail.com) to ensure your booking is confirmed.

    Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire,

Hit the nail on the head.Too many wringing their hands”What if he is a dud”.”What if he does not fit in to our style of play”What style?.Do they mean endless balls across the middle, and back.He probably would not fit into this style, but if you mean getting the ball into the opponents box, different story. He has done it at every club he has played for.If you want 100% cast iron certainty, then buy Messi,Ronaldo.

    ———

Not wishing to burst your balloon , has our proposed new goal-scoring saviour played for a successful team , who have plenty of the ball against deep lying defences? Genuine question, I have no idea.

We wouldn’t want to make a Harold mistake who had no space to run into; or Kenny Miller touch like a rhino, or Rasmussen lazy sod outside the box who would not jump for a header or really move for a ball unless it was a cut-back.

If our new proposed goal-scorer is nearer a Rasmussen than a Harold then these guys are harder to integrate into modern football teams and I suggest they do best in mid-table teams , with plenty of end-to-end open games. Perhaps, this may explain why teams with deeper pockets than ourselves have failed to purchase this young lad.

    Only a theory ……..

Tricky business buying footballers nowadays ….

Just walked past Ibrox and saw 2 season tickets nailed to the door.

“Ya beauty I’ll have those!” I thought to myself.

Well you can never have too many nails.

  4. A good mate of mine down in Eastbourne is a big Chelsea fan ( In general, their fans don`t give a toss about Sevco) and he says his team will win nothing this year because they don`t have a striker ( he predicted they would lose to Sunderland). So, Chelsea don`t have a striker. Chelsea ! So, could those of you who think £5 million almost guarantees success (well, Fletcher would have won many, many games for us…….apparently) tell me why Chelsea haven`t got a striker?

I am beginning to think that strikers are a very rare commodity as the nature of the game keeps changing. I am also beginning to think that those who believe all we have to do is spend £5 million and we are very likely to find success are somewhat deluded. We already have success in Scotland so you must be talking of the CL re success. You think a £5 million is going to bring that? Dearie me.

The club have embarked on a strategy, they are sticking to it.

They may well unearth a gem, who knows.

As has been posted, buy someone who has scored at their previous club, seems the sensible thing to do.

    The problem with your scenario is that had they spent on a proven scorer, he wouldn’t be a 10/1 shot, more like evens >}

Pawel Brosek is an interesting case to consider.

From age 22 onwards with Wisla he averaged a goal every other game – 91 goals in 177 games, peaking at 26 in 35 games one season.

He went to Turkey, then Celtic, then Spain, bombing each time.

He’s now back at Wisla. Guess what? He’s got 12 goals in 20 games so far this season.

  10. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    JJ,

Very naive or leading statement, I doubt a £5M striker would make muck difference to chelsea but you seem to have us in that spending league, why ?

Me I think if we spent £5M on a striker we’d make a load of money on him, thats just my opinion though. Chelsea would probably make more, just for signing him, difference being any striker playing for us would have to prove their worth, whereas with chelsea its like art, they pay big money and set the price, no ?

  11. Evening all

A striker we signed in the last ten years who scored prolifically – probably more than from his previous club- was Scott Macdonald. Not everybody’s cup of tea but he scored more than most post Henrik.

As for Alfred the possibly great/ new Kris Boyd I do wonder why nobody else went for him. So were Rasmussen’s and Haraald’s. Tend to feel he was worth a punt in the summer instead of the three attackers we signed in the summer. Although other than Sydney Tim I don’t think anybody else here predicted just how disappointing Pukki, Balde and Boerichter would be.

Was told last week that JP was adamant that Fonbogason at £5M or anything near it was a NO NO from him.

Well that settles it then.John Park, the man who brought us such great strikers as,Bangura,Murphy,Brozek,Pukki, etc. The man would not recognize a striker if he found one in his soup.

Nobody is demanding we sign Alfie, just get us a striker that does what it says on the label. If £5 million is the going rate, then bloody pay it.Fed up with this faffing around.

What if £5M isn’t the going rate for Alfie?

How much would you pay for Alfie – whatever his agent wants?

  15. Canamalar

He possibly did. I think given those we have signed post Sammy – Hooper aside- have been disappointing to the frankly dire pardon for me being suspicious about any striker we are looking at.

Lot of issues the current board need to confront. You bet!

Most significant achievement? More trust and transparency from the board. Eh?

Biggest disappointment? Didn’t answer it really.

Concerned about new investment? Yes. Graham Wallace recognises investment required. Cost base is too high for the 3rd tier and indeed the SPL.

He needs to reflect on today and see how things shape up in the new year.

  19. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Jimbo67,

Could it be we dont want to spend money on players who have scored goals, always looking to those who “might score” so we can male a killing, and who says we dont gamble eh.

  20. Re Sevco AGM

Read online there that one of the resolutions to allow more shares to be created was knocked back.

    So no new investment then!

  21. Neil Canamalar

That doesn’t seem an unreasonable assertion. I have never been convinced by the arguments as to why we spent so little following the twin windfalls of last season’s Champions’ League money and the fees received for Wanyama, Hooper and Wilson. And I’m a bit of a happy clapper

Eh…….how has Balde failed on the park? He has not had the benefit of a run in the team.

Saw him score a good goal on his last appearance….hasn’t been seen since.

Not sure how this is supposed to help either him or our club.

  24. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Jimbo67,

I laid it out last season, there is a strategy to rid the stadium of corporate undesirables namely the GB, knowing such a purge would create division and a reduction of season ticket renewals, the money is needed until the escape from the SPL, once that is achieved the corporate dream becomes a reality, the PLC is in the big time and that has been the target since DD took over, the more than a club has been a mugs game and milked by the mugs but thats just the opinion of this armitage shanks (is a cynic something you piss in if the toilet is busy ?)

  25. Gerry

I know Amido Balde has not had anything approaching a run in the team. I can only judge him on what I’ve seen of him and from what I’ve seen he’s not a good player. If he proves me wrong I’ll be pleased.
