SPL Commission, where are we?

897

We’ve not really discussed the enormous political and disciplinary matters hanging over Scottish football since before our Champions League campaign got underway but it moves to the fore today, as the SPL Commission, headed by Lord Nimmo Smith, sits to consider charges levelled by the league against former member, Rangers FC.  The Commission is expected to conclude by the end of this week.

Rangers are charged with improperly registering players by allowing footballers to enter into contractually binding agreements to receive money in connection with the game, directly or indirectly, without registering these agreements with the SPL or the SFA.

Playing an improperly registering footballer voids the result of a match, no matter how innocuous the registration impropriety is, as Spartans discovered 14 months ago to their cost.  They saw their Scottish Cup win over Culter overturned because a player’s registration form was dated only once, not twice as required.

As well as being awarded a 0-3 defeat, the improper registration of players will cost the offending club any prize money ‘won’ and will result in a disciplinary measure being imposed.  Spartans were fined £4000, approximately 20% of their annual income, and were suspended from the competition for 12 months.  A steep tariff for leaving a box on a form empty and fielding a player in one game of football.

Lots of speculation has centred on the so-called ‘stripping of titles’ but in the event the Commission upholds the charge the voiding of results will happen as a matter of consequence; it should not subject to speculation.  What is more interesting is the size of prize money the league would seek to reclaim, and redistribute, and any penalty imposed by the Commission.

SPL teams receive prize money based on their final league position, funded by the league’s TV deal, which for teams finishing in the top two positions is well in excess of £1m each year.  Any ‘stripping of titles’ is likely to be a headline grabber, but the repayment of prize money and disciplinary measures will be far more significant, for some.

Sir David Murray, who owned Rangers throughout the period of alleged improper registration of players, insists the club registered all contractually binding payments players received in connection with playing football.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, was an executive director of Rangers for some of the period under investigation and may have been responsible for some registrations.

Charles Green rejected an offer to limit the consequences of the charge being upheld in return for his company (then called Sevco 5088 Ltd) acquiring the SFA membership vacated by Rangers.  We will soon discover if he is master of the Cunning Plan or an over-ambitious gambler.

I expect calls for SPL and SFA rules to be upheld without fear or favour to be met.

  4. Any word on the bhoy George’s injury last night? I have high hopes for him and he is only back after a deadybear broke his leg last season. Until we protect and encourage our gifted young players, we will never a good Scottish team again.

We haven’t actually got the CL money yet. I suspect that even when it’s in, we may not see much of it released until we’re sure of income for next season.

I would not be surprised (and I expect much wailing and gnashing of teeth) to see it banked to offset losses while The Rangers are not in the same league as us.

It pains me to say this but as much as we go on about them being a new club and there being no rivalry with them. I know that as soon as we have a game against them whether it’s in a cup or they eventually climb into the same league as us, the attendance will be higher than for any other domestic game.

  6. weeminger,

You may well be right in your contention that the numbers will be higher for a match against them but I for one will NOT attend any game in which we face any phoenix of that deid team, whether at Parkhead or anywhere else. We should offer them no encouragement whatsoever. They are dead and I for one hope they remain that way,no matter how many attempts are made to resurrect them.

  8. In Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 13 unarmed civil rights demonstrators are shot dead by British Army paratroopers in an event that becomes known as “Bloody Sunday.” The protesters, all Northern Catholics, were marching in protest of the British policy of internment of suspected Irish nationalists. British authorities had ordered the march banned, and sent troops to confront the demonstrators when it went ahead. The soldiers fired indiscriminately into the crowd of protesters, killing 13 and wounding 17.

The killings brought worldwide attention to the crisis in Northern Ireland and sparked protests all across Ireland. In Dublin, the capital of independent Ireland, outraged Irish citizens lit the British embassy aflame on February 2.

The crisis in Northern Ireland escalated in 1969 when British troops were sent to the British possession to suppress nationalist activity by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and to quell religious violence between Protestants and Catholics.

In April 1972, the British government released a report exonerating British troops from any illegal actions during the Londonderry protest. Irish indignation over Britain’s Northern Ireland policies grew, and Britain increased its military presence in the North while removing any vestige of Northern self-rule. On July 21, 1972, the IRA exploded 20 bombs simultaneously in Belfast, killing British military personnel and a number of civilians. Britain responded by instituting a new court system composed of trial without jury for terrorism suspects and conviction rates topped over 90 percent.

The IRA officially disarmed in September 2005, finally fulfilling the terms of the historic 1998 Good Friday peace agreement. It was hoped that the disarmament would bring with it an end to decades of politically motivated bloodshed in the region.

Deeply saddened to read last night’s slight on Bobby Evans.

  12. So….for us second-class punters, the match is not on the visual valium the night……so I’ll have to be content with either audio or watching El Clasico (pt. 1)….and I’ll be recording Liverpool v Arsenal.

Got CelticTV, but they don’t show games live in The UK…..and the picture is circa 1971.

    Gnaarrll gnarrll snagg snagg.

And they’re showing all sorts of inferior games from Scotland on sky & alba, but the champions and European participants……..oh no, we’re not good enough.

And they’re giving top billing to the cretinous 4th. tier mob’s game v DU at the w/end.

    Us? Barely worth a mention.

A revolution is required. Sign me up. Gie me some ammo. Ah’m sick of bouncin’ around at the back of the dilapidated bus.

Never saw Bobby Evans play but I have read and seen footage of him to know that he was a fantastic player, and in an era when Celtic players were frequently overlooked he won 48 caps for Scotland – a minor miracle in itself. My old dad has also told me a lot about him.

He played something like 535 games for CFC – which puts him in the top ten in the all-time appearance table – and was club captain from 1955-57 when big Jock retired. When he was stripped of the captaincy in favour of Bertie Peacock this seems to have caused a certain amount of rancour – dont know the ins and outs of this but some on here appear to.

Even after losing the captaincy he remained at Celtic for a further 3 years.

A Celtic great in my opinion – dare I say legend?!

If they could, they’d build workhouses, poorhouses and reinstate the deserving/undeserving poor hypocritical Victorian mindset.

We have a young Swedish keeper (Viktor Norring) over and he is looking very likely.

However I would doubt he would be FF’s replacement, more likely brought in to give Lukas some competition.

Maybe if he proves a good signing he could be number 1 in the summer should FF leave but would doubt it would be for now.
