SPL Commission, where are we?

897

We’ve not really discussed the enormous political and disciplinary matters hanging over Scottish football since before our Champions League campaign got underway but it moves to the fore today, as the SPL Commission, headed by Lord Nimmo Smith, sits to consider charges levelled by the league against former member, Rangers FC.  The Commission is expected to conclude by the end of this week.

Rangers are charged with improperly registering players by allowing footballers to enter into contractually binding agreements to receive money in connection with the game, directly or indirectly, without registering these agreements with the SPL or the SFA.

Playing an improperly registering footballer voids the result of a match, no matter how innocuous the registration impropriety is, as Spartans discovered 14 months ago to their cost.  They saw their Scottish Cup win over Culter overturned because a player’s registration form was dated only once, not twice as required.

As well as being awarded a 0-3 defeat, the improper registration of players will cost the offending club any prize money ‘won’ and will result in a disciplinary measure being imposed.  Spartans were fined £4000, approximately 20% of their annual income, and were suspended from the competition for 12 months.  A steep tariff for leaving a box on a form empty and fielding a player in one game of football.

Lots of speculation has centred on the so-called ‘stripping of titles’ but in the event the Commission upholds the charge the voiding of results will happen as a matter of consequence; it should not subject to speculation.  What is more interesting is the size of prize money the league would seek to reclaim, and redistribute, and any penalty imposed by the Commission.

SPL teams receive prize money based on their final league position, funded by the league’s TV deal, which for teams finishing in the top two positions is well in excess of £1m each year.  Any ‘stripping of titles’ is likely to be a headline grabber, but the repayment of prize money and disciplinary measures will be far more significant, for some.

Sir David Murray, who owned Rangers throughout the period of alleged improper registration of players, insists the club registered all contractually binding payments players received in connection with playing football.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, was an executive director of Rangers for some of the period under investigation and may have been responsible for some registrations.

Charles Green rejected an offer to limit the consequences of the charge being upheld in return for his company (then called Sevco 5088 Ltd) acquiring the SFA membership vacated by Rangers.  We will soon discover if he is master of the Cunning Plan or an over-ambitious gambler.

I expect calls for SPL and SFA rules to be upheld without fear or favour to be met.

  3. CE – is not what it says on the tin. Teachers basically having to re-write the lessons they are already giving to incorporate more group work, less textbook stuff, and to encourage group learning – aimed at bringing them all on together.

It’s a waste of teacher’s time, and most of them can’t be bothered with it.

Another example of Scotland being run by those not of the Tim-persuarsion

  4. Have watched Juve all last year and so far this season – they have regressed somewhat from last year in terms of player pool.

They have a starting 11 (minus Chievo) but lack an in-depth bench the exception being Pogba – but 3 good games recently doesn’t necessarily mean strength-in-depth.

Their strikers are in poor form – questions over what Anelka will bring to the party but he does have good positional sense and ability to play off the last man.

Evident tonight that without Pirlo and Lichsteiner they lack; creativity, width and penetration – take them out and IMO opinion we have a chance.

Excluding big FF – think we have 10 from 15 out-field options (if we include JF and Stokes) – the tie may well be decided on how many key-players we keep fit (and on form) versus their pool.

This CL double-header is winable if we have 8+ players with their heads scewed-on!

talent without opportunity is nothing. if we do indeed have so many talented young players we should be giving them the opportunity to shine (not all at once). of the 5 or so mentioned maybe one or two will excel, that will save celtic a fortune and you tend to find the academy bhoys are willing to work towards a good wage and commit to the club.

from the little i see and hear, i think lenny should maybe consider giving mcgeogh and george a couple of run oust. watt has lots of potential, we all see that, but he is not the best with regard link up play etc…, key to being a quality forward, more so at celtic than other clubs given the tactics used against us in just about every domestic game (everyone behind the ball), it will come in time.

i know we have a good academy but more than anything else the youg bhoys need some opportunities to show what they can do

Celtic used to, may still, provide classroom facilities for schools. The brother of a regular contributor to CQN was employed, may still be, by Scottish government, to run the facility.

Would it be something you’d encourage and do you consider it complementary to their education? My gripe is mostly with the non-consultation/permission from parents (might just be bad admin/organisation on the school’s part), but it jarred. Is there an equivalent at CP?

  17. These are the players and staff which the BBC have copies of their UNDISCLOSED TO THE SPL/SFA side letters. It’s fairly common knowledge that quite a few incriminating documents were shredded, Mr. Bain instructed his staff to shred his contract documents, not that as a non player we are really interested in.

  18. hoopsmon just asked my wife ( secondary teacher ) she said that you should approach the school and explain that you do not want your child to continue with this and to be withdrawn from attending. She did also say that Celtic do indeed do this and it is called Celtic learning and pupils from her school attend this.

Lurking a while now and an occasional poster. This is off topic, but I hope you’ll all bear with me as I’d like a few learned CQN opinions on something that’s been bothering me for a few days. My child attends (for reasons I spent a lot of time considering) a ‘non-denominational’ school. I have just learned that the school has organised – no prior consultation with parents was entered into – over a seven week period, (best part of three hours of their school week taking in travel and time out of school) to take P6 and 7 children to the Sports Direct Arena to take part in……..wait for it………maths lessons!!!! Yes, maths lessons – no mistake. Once I’d had my sides re-stitched at A&E and an injection of anti-irony serum administered, I contacted the school today and had this confirmed. The silence was deafening (although the cough was loud) when I asked when the follow-up visit to Celtic Park would be taking place, of course. Apparently there are also 1st, 2nd and 3rd year pupils from the local secondary attending. Any educators on here had any experience of this? Any advice on which department of the Curriculum for Excellence I can take this further with would also be appreciated.

being £150,000,000,000 (£150 Billion In Debt) with you know who contributing

to said debt what the Coalition Government is proposing to do is to emerge

schools together to free up spare land which will be sold to private developers

to build part private and part Council Houses on said freed up land which

should recuperate billions back into the Treasurers Purse/Wallet in future

hence cuts and money making projects when I raised this matter with my

local MP’s and said good that should mean more future Council Tax Freezes

her non response was deafening as one would say talk about money grabbing

I am of the opinion they have a few weaknesses they aren’t the best at defending cross balls.

    They cannot finish there dinner.

Play a very narrow tight and through the middle of park system more so when there attacking right back is not selected.
