SPL Commission, where are we?

897

We’ve not really discussed the enormous political and disciplinary matters hanging over Scottish football since before our Champions League campaign got underway but it moves to the fore today, as the SPL Commission, headed by Lord Nimmo Smith, sits to consider charges levelled by the league against former member, Rangers FC.  The Commission is expected to conclude by the end of this week.

Rangers are charged with improperly registering players by allowing footballers to enter into contractually binding agreements to receive money in connection with the game, directly or indirectly, without registering these agreements with the SPL or the SFA.

Playing an improperly registering footballer voids the result of a match, no matter how innocuous the registration impropriety is, as Spartans discovered 14 months ago to their cost.  They saw their Scottish Cup win over Culter overturned because a player’s registration form was dated only once, not twice as required.

As well as being awarded a 0-3 defeat, the improper registration of players will cost the offending club any prize money ‘won’ and will result in a disciplinary measure being imposed.  Spartans were fined £4000, approximately 20% of their annual income, and were suspended from the competition for 12 months.  A steep tariff for leaving a box on a form empty and fielding a player in one game of football.

Lots of speculation has centred on the so-called ‘stripping of titles’ but in the event the Commission upholds the charge the voiding of results will happen as a matter of consequence; it should not subject to speculation.  What is more interesting is the size of prize money the league would seek to reclaim, and redistribute, and any penalty imposed by the Commission.

SPL teams receive prize money based on their final league position, funded by the league’s TV deal, which for teams finishing in the top two positions is well in excess of £1m each year.  Any ‘stripping of titles’ is likely to be a headline grabber, but the repayment of prize money and disciplinary measures will be far more significant, for some.

Sir David Murray, who owned Rangers throughout the period of alleged improper registration of players, insists the club registered all contractually binding payments players received in connection with playing football.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, was an executive director of Rangers for some of the period under investigation and may have been responsible for some registrations.

Charles Green rejected an offer to limit the consequences of the charge being upheld in return for his company (then called Sevco 5088 Ltd) acquiring the SFA membership vacated by Rangers.  We will soon discover if he is master of the Cunning Plan or an over-ambitious gambler.

I expect calls for SPL and SFA rules to be upheld without fear or favour to be met.

Completely agree regarding the young players – ok they are young, inexperienced and still have a lot to learn.

But Tony Watt was considered good enough to come on against Barca – and look what happened.

Dylan was outstanding against Real last summer before his horrendous injury – he returned to action months ago and has hardly kicked a ball for the first team since.

Saw Filip Twardzik play very well when we clinched the title last season at Rugby Park – looks composed.

Paul George – after coming back from his horrendous leg-break a few months ago – has apparently been outstanding.

Bahrudin Atajic has been scoring goals for fun this season.

John Herron is another one to look out for.

    I could go on….

I am not advocating that all these bhoys should be thrown in at the deep end all at once – just that they be given more of an opportunity on a more regular basis.

    Agree for the most part.

I just think if someone like Watt or McGeough got a wee run it might make some of the others pick their game up.

    A win win situation.

    Anyway bed calls.

    Busy day tomorrow.

    Night all!

  3. Filip Twardzik is still injured. It was Patrik who played tonight for the U20s, and was penalised for the Kilmarnock penalty.

I’d love to see these young, hungry ghuys getting a run.

Watt, McGeogh, Twardzic et al……..where are they?

Instead we are subjected to disinterested performances from players who can’t raise their games against the bread and butter sides we meet in scotland.

I would play Dylan mcGeough in every game from here on.

    Tony Watt too.

What do these players seriously think when they see the diddies that are getting picked before them?

I’ve said it before on here, I despair for our young players.

    Prove me wrong Neilly.

    Please.

As I mentioned in an earlier post

The young ones will get their chance to shine and gel

once this Season’s SPL Title is in the bag

After all these types of games are the bread and butter

for hopefully future CL matches after this Season

leave it to the experience players to produce the goods

    which I’m sure they will

  6. Dont agree with everything said in that Wanyama link but had to agree on this line,

Wanyama is a player with a huge future. He is that astonishing, and rare mix, of a monstrously powerful player with a gentle touch and a keen eye. He is the fist in a velvet glove.

Guilty as charged as far as being an elected politician, but it does not necessary make me a bad person.

I will do my best to help the GB, they have my contact details for any follow up, I have to get back to them on some matters I have been following up. Some of the advice I gave them on tactics they had been progressing as well the next few months will be very telling as the funding for the dedicated Police unit is up for review in March after that things may become less high profile especially as the new SNP Scottish Police force comes into operation.

Budgets are under pressure I am sure Stephen House will support the FOCUS Police unit but I think the money will be cut.

here is a question for you, 1) what was the only trophy that Paul

    picked up as hoops captain?

    2) Which Cup Final? 3) The Year? 4) & Against which Team?

stories are great, so here’s one, when we beat airdrie 1 – 0 in the scottish cup, think it was, 95/96 i was in hospital after undergoing significant surgery.

i knew celtic were playing in the scottish cup finalday after my surgery so asked if i could bring in t.v to watch game, nursing staff said no need we’ll make sure you have a t.v.

day after surgery, day of the game, nursing staff says sorry no t.v you cant leave bed or ward so you’ll need to listen on radio.

reply: are you having a laugh, either you get me a t.v or i’ll be leaving right now

nurse: you cant you have a morphine drip etc…

    reply: watch me

after massive argument with nurse(s)/ hospital staff get hold of a t.v. i was afforded a black and white t.v. watch the game pissed right off until PVH scored, so f*cking happy. watch highlights in black and white later that evening

never been so pissed off with a nurse in all my life, still think f&ck was trying to play mind games with a tim, no joke, professionalism oot the window that day

  20. I must agree with the CQNers calling for Neil to play the young ones.

McGeough, if fit, should play. I appreciate he’s only coming back, but God speed!

Performances like Sunday’s cannot go unpunished. Players who underperformed must be dropped. Otherwise, the young ones get dispirited and the non-triers continue to repeat such performances from time to time.

CM, VW, GS, IZ and LZ must all be dropped. Thus proving that the shirt does not shrink…

  23. Lurking a while now and an occasional poster. This is off topic, but I hope you’ll all bear with me as I’d like a few learned CQN opinions on something that’s been bothering me for a few days. My child attends (for reasons I spent a lot of time considering) a ‘non-denominational’ school. I have just learned that the school has organised – no prior consultation with parents was entered into – over a seven week period, (best part of three hours of their school week taking in travel and time out of school) to take P6 and 7 children to the Sports Direct Arena to take part in……..wait for it………maths lessons!!!! Yes, maths lessons – no mistake. Once I’d had my sides re-stitched at A&E and an injection of anti-irony serum administered, I contacted the school today and had this confirmed. The silence was deafening (although the cough was loud) when I asked when the follow-up visit to Celtic Park would be taking place, of course. Apparently there are also 1st, 2nd and 3rd year pupils from the local secondary attending. Any educators on here had any experience of this? Any advice on which department of the Curriculum for Excellence I can take this further with would also be appreciated.

I think the harassment of our fans will continue particularly in the run up to the new Police force and arrests for trivial crimes will continue the GB lads have a good view on how to minimise arrests and are taking the right action.

Roll of Honour seems to be the song they are concentrating on and at least 1 person arrested is pleading not guilty to the charge and this will bring a determination on if the song should be banned.

The act has a built-in review period I think the act will have to be brought before the Justice Comm in the parliament to highlight how useless the act is and we and others have to pressurize as much as possible to bring to the wider public’s attention what a waste of time and money it all has been.

The SNP will have to keep backing the act so will be here for a wee while longer.
