SPL Commission, where are we?

897

We’ve not really discussed the enormous political and disciplinary matters hanging over Scottish football since before our Champions League campaign got underway but it moves to the fore today, as the SPL Commission, headed by Lord Nimmo Smith, sits to consider charges levelled by the league against former member, Rangers FC.  The Commission is expected to conclude by the end of this week.

Rangers are charged with improperly registering players by allowing footballers to enter into contractually binding agreements to receive money in connection with the game, directly or indirectly, without registering these agreements with the SPL or the SFA.

Playing an improperly registering footballer voids the result of a match, no matter how innocuous the registration impropriety is, as Spartans discovered 14 months ago to their cost.  They saw their Scottish Cup win over Culter overturned because a player’s registration form was dated only once, not twice as required.

As well as being awarded a 0-3 defeat, the improper registration of players will cost the offending club any prize money ‘won’ and will result in a disciplinary measure being imposed.  Spartans were fined £4000, approximately 20% of their annual income, and were suspended from the competition for 12 months.  A steep tariff for leaving a box on a form empty and fielding a player in one game of football.

Lots of speculation has centred on the so-called ‘stripping of titles’ but in the event the Commission upholds the charge the voiding of results will happen as a matter of consequence; it should not subject to speculation.  What is more interesting is the size of prize money the league would seek to reclaim, and redistribute, and any penalty imposed by the Commission.

SPL teams receive prize money based on their final league position, funded by the league’s TV deal, which for teams finishing in the top two positions is well in excess of £1m each year.  Any ‘stripping of titles’ is likely to be a headline grabber, but the repayment of prize money and disciplinary measures will be far more significant, for some.

Sir David Murray, who owned Rangers throughout the period of alleged improper registration of players, insists the club registered all contractually binding payments players received in connection with playing football.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, was an executive director of Rangers for some of the period under investigation and may have been responsible for some registrations.

Charles Green rejected an offer to limit the consequences of the charge being upheld in return for his company (then called Sevco 5088 Ltd) acquiring the SFA membership vacated by Rangers.  We will soon discover if he is master of the Cunning Plan or an over-ambitious gambler.

I expect calls for SPL and SFA rules to be upheld without fear or favour to be met.

From what I’ve read, representing Rangers FC had a deadline which expired, the RFFF made a shout last week they were going to send lawyers, LNS said the invitation was open, so another deadline broken, at least that was my interpretation.

  2. Does anyone else think this big Frazer Foster situation is a wee bit bizarre.I hope I’m wrong but it feels like were being set up for his exit.Hope I’m wrong.

Can you remind me about this post later, please?

For obvious reasons, and not kidding either…….

    Will do, BMCUWP

Good luck to wee Jackie this coming weekend and beyond

if he can get Utd to play like the first 20 minutes or so when

they played against us just recently and beyond twenty

minutes then Utd should get past Sevco5088 and into the

    next round

I always remember the goal he scored in the Scottish Cup

Final against Hibs in MON’s treble winning Season and the

joy on his face after said goal going in bless him and good

luck to him @ Utd I think he will do better than what Craig

Leven & Peter Houston did @ Utd which means we will

have to up our overall Season performance rate in future

especially next Season if we want to win the SPL

time will tell on that issue

  6. campbell ogilivie has to be pushed out of his position as gruppenfuhrer of the corrupt scottish f.a. now .its a farce

  7. Hello CQN.

Looks like AVB has finally put the Hooper rumours to bed.

By the way, I’m in Stockholm, any recommendations where I can catch the game tomorrow night? Is that celticbars site up to date?

  8. TonyG, I hope we’re wrong. Trapped a nerve in my neck once, took months of physio to get it right. But that was playing golf, in the rain.

Hope we’re worrying over nothing as there doesnt seem to be any speculation, stranger things have happened tho.

  9. Wonder if Jacky Mac will register as a player for Saturday Hee Hee?

How can we have an SPL President who owes £95,000 (they’re loans, right?) to a member club.

He issued a UEFA licence to said member club when they had ADMITTED GUILT in a tax case.

    stinking, rotten, corrupt.

  10. After the torrential downpour that passed for our weather this afternoon, suddenly it has brightened up considerably. Are we in the eye of the storm, because serious gales were predicted?

Contract error costs Spartans Scottish Cup place

Spartans have been thrown out of the Scottish Cup for fielding an ineligible player in their 2-0 win over Culter.

Striker Keith McLeod signed a new contract in the summer but it was dated only once and the Scottish Football Association want it to be signed twice.

Spartans chairman Craig Graham said the club were “disappointed” by the ruling, adding:

“We wish Culter well against Partick Thistle ”

Spartans have also received a £4,000 fine suspended for 12 months.

On second thoughts,I don’t think I’d like to get my memory restored to when I was young,I’d want to back to those days.

  17. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Spence said United saw Jackie as a “bright young thing”. I guess Dodds had no chance then!

  18. Apart from about a season or 2 prior to his getting a bad injury, I never thought Jackie Mac was such a great player. But I wish him all the best in his new job. I hope he hammers the deadybears in the Cup.

I wonder if the reason Ogilvie hasn’t yet resigned is that he is afraid the polis might be preparing to feel his collar for condoning and abetting such corruption, never mind his acceptance of the EBT. Can no one demand his removal?

  19. Burgas Hoops.

I’m just posting about memory loss,And you come up with column gear change,I’m not a driver so I suppose it would be on the column.either that you would have to be very friendly with one of the co-drivers that sat beside you.

ones with the Wooden Chasse Rears & The little

Arms that use to pop up when they where turning

around five shillings (twenty five pence) and

nowadays said equivalent amount of fuel is nearly

£5 per gallon those where the days my friends

than one and there was four weather seasons in

one year in Scotland with a guaranteed summer

not like nowadays where it’s a guaranteed winters

I have 2 seven day containers, and I do manage to take them most days but when there’s a mid-week game,I’m inclined to forget the injection, although I have taken an injection in front of a few fellow supporters, discretely.

  24. More a lurker than poster….

    Re Deadco and latest inquest.

I believe all will be done to appease newco…ie minimal punishment…after all, the authorities don’t want “civil unrest” on the streets of Glasgow.

    Re Team selection for tomorrow…

Part of me says NL should put out same starting XI, as they’d have motivation to rectify awful performance on Sunday.

Too many looked lethargic from very early on. I also remember one awful incident (0-1 @ time) when Matthews tried to take a throw in about 12yds from our own corner flag. 2 obvious outlets were Wanyama and Ledley but BOTH turned away…neither wanting the ball…shocking.

Lack of desire apparent in too many players. Thought they could win in 2nd gear. Eyes on Juve game.

    All contributed to our downfall.

NL as manager is the man entrusted with ensuring we don’t see a repeat tomorrow.

I have every faith he will.

Having 7 subs threatening your place in side would help. Should be achievable, barring knocks/injuries.

    HH

  25. One nagging doubt I have over this is that Campbell Ogilvie didn’t get to hell out of dodge when he had the chance.

And another that Chuckie Green agreed to take on the punishments of Oldco in return for their licence.

Now Campbell may just be of the arrogant mindset that he is the peepul and can’t be touched or he was not near enough to the dodgy documents to be implicated and hence he is sitting tight OR he is sure they won’t get their just deserts???

As for Chuckie – desperation to get in to the league after plan a and plan b being ruled out led to him doing whatever it took to get a team on the park and customers through the gates – hence he agrees to take the punishments for imporper registration. Or maybe he misunderstood, or maybe he feels there will be no penalty.

If New Rangers have to pony up for voided titles then Administration beckons again.

call me a pessimist, a cynic or a realist – but I just don’t see it.

  26. Did I say again? Oops – new club, administration would be a first. Although it is unclear if this is a world record for fastest insolvency event for a new club……
