SPL Commission, where are we?

897

We’ve not really discussed the enormous political and disciplinary matters hanging over Scottish football since before our Champions League campaign got underway but it moves to the fore today, as the SPL Commission, headed by Lord Nimmo Smith, sits to consider charges levelled by the league against former member, Rangers FC.  The Commission is expected to conclude by the end of this week.

Rangers are charged with improperly registering players by allowing footballers to enter into contractually binding agreements to receive money in connection with the game, directly or indirectly, without registering these agreements with the SPL or the SFA.

Playing an improperly registering footballer voids the result of a match, no matter how innocuous the registration impropriety is, as Spartans discovered 14 months ago to their cost.  They saw their Scottish Cup win over Culter overturned because a player’s registration form was dated only once, not twice as required.

As well as being awarded a 0-3 defeat, the improper registration of players will cost the offending club any prize money ‘won’ and will result in a disciplinary measure being imposed.  Spartans were fined £4000, approximately 20% of their annual income, and were suspended from the competition for 12 months.  A steep tariff for leaving a box on a form empty and fielding a player in one game of football.

Lots of speculation has centred on the so-called ‘stripping of titles’ but in the event the Commission upholds the charge the voiding of results will happen as a matter of consequence; it should not subject to speculation.  What is more interesting is the size of prize money the league would seek to reclaim, and redistribute, and any penalty imposed by the Commission.

SPL teams receive prize money based on their final league position, funded by the league’s TV deal, which for teams finishing in the top two positions is well in excess of £1m each year.  Any ‘stripping of titles’ is likely to be a headline grabber, but the repayment of prize money and disciplinary measures will be far more significant, for some.

Sir David Murray, who owned Rangers throughout the period of alleged improper registration of players, insists the club registered all contractually binding payments players received in connection with playing football.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, was an executive director of Rangers for some of the period under investigation and may have been responsible for some registrations.

Charles Green rejected an offer to limit the consequences of the charge being upheld in return for his company (then called Sevco 5088 Ltd) acquiring the SFA membership vacated by Rangers.  We will soon discover if he is master of the Cunning Plan or an over-ambitious gambler.

I expect calls for SPL and SFA rules to be upheld without fear or favour to be met.

  1. Auldheid,

with all due respect CO’s position has been untenable from the

day this all became public and yet he is still there, not one chairman that i have noted anyway has called for him to step aside this is very telling in this new era of reconstructing for the good of the game.

  2. Im still slightly bemused why Sevco have any role in this. The Spl case is against Deadco not Sevco. Anybody know on what legal grounds Newco are involved at all?

    Monaghan1900,

Even they are issuing misinformation the Articles of Association require 5 years for an associate member to become a full memeber. Its all there in black and white :o)

  4. When sevco were allowed to join the sfl it was on the condition that all football debts be paid so surely if/when they are found guilty and if there is redistribution of prize money it would have to be added to oldco debt which chucky and his sevco cohorts would be liable for

  5. Got to agree with CorkCelt and TBB earlier.

LNS will deliberate and decide. Most probably fairly.

I’m happy to wait, see, reflect then decide on my opinion based on what is factually reported.

Juve have agreed to sell Quagliarella to Fiorentina . Juve want 10 million euros for Quagliarella/ Fiorentina think that is way too much. Juve have told Fiorentina -we will drop the price if you agree to us signing Jovetic for X in the summer ..

Jovetic is a fabulous player . Some rumor mongers have him going to Man City / Arsenal /PSG [ but in the case of the latter only if PSG sell the wondrous Pastore to Real Madrid .

If they are found guilty of playing illegally registered players could this open floodgates for claims for clubs whom list their SPL status or even euro clubs put out by rangers with these players ?

  8. What worries me is that Nimmo is known for his role in ‘All Gas and Gaiters’ and, more worryingly, in ‘Oh Brother!’.

I’d love to think the book will be thrown at them but too much has happened to let me hold out any hope. I’d imagine some ambiguity with the rules or the grey area with the HMRC case will see them get away with it.

    well said danso 1888

If CO’s position is not challenged then the so called reconstruction of Scottish

Football for the good of the so called game is nothing but a scam/cover up

to help Sevco and the SFA/SPL should be treated with contempt and treated

as a corrupt organisation that should be exposed to the whole football world

as being shocking and a disgrace to the so called fairness of the game

  12. Paul67.When you post the square which comes up is usually Yellow.mine turned to green last night, did you change the colour,or have I been blessed by a greater being,it’s softer on the eyes.I think it was when I was talking to Canonamalar.

  13. The Battered Bunnet on

Remember that LNS has been given a detailed remit. It is that remit that defines the scope of his inquiry.

For example: The issue of a player’s eligibility regarding contract registration only arises from season 2005/06 when the new FIFA rules of registration were introduced. While prior to that it was required that full contracts must be lodged with the authorities, only after that date is failure to lodge full contract details considered to invalidate the registration.

I’m pretty sure that the Commission will be most pedantic in ensuring that it stays within its remit and upholds the letter of the rules, and consequently, there will be a few unexpected outcomes.

    are you kidding

so P67 writes about the biggest investigation into sporting integrity in the history of the game and we should just wait and see without even duiscussing P67’s article :o)

thats very like a ‘move along nothing to see here’ type request were used to from elsewhere :o)

Malone Bhoy, we’ll find out soon enough.

oldtim67, that must have been divine intervention. Nothing to do with me!

  17. Looking for some clarification regarding the recent Sevco share issue and who exactly owns the club now playing in Div3.

Sevco 5088 bought the assets from the dead club.

Challs created a new company, Sevco Scotland Ltd, and transferred the assets from Sevco 5088 to the newco.

Sevco Scotland Ltd became The Rangers Football Club Ltd.

We now have another new company, Rangers Football PLC, who have changed their name to Rangers International Football Club PLC

Why didn’t ‘Rangers Football Club Ltd’ just change the company status to a PLC when the shares were issues just as Celtic did in 1994?

Why create a new company, ‘Rangers Football PLC’?

Did the new PLC company buy the assets off ‘The Rangers Football Club Ltd’?

SPL should latterly see the writing on the wall and how can

their jobs be justified in the so called fairness of the game in

general in other words they should be removed from their

positions get them out corruption does not have a place in

the overall fairness of the football authority’s in Scottish

Football and said matter should be seriously addressed by

UEFA & FIFA for the credibility of the game in Scotland as

    a whole matter

I know I’m not as knowledgable as many of the erudite and well-informed posters on here about all things Celtic ( and it’s a downright pleasure to be kept aware and entertained 24/7…believe me ) but I do know, on an emotional level how awful the entire edifice known as sevco can be, and that this reprehensible chancer, ‘Chawlls’, is utilising the worst aspects of it all to line his pocket, and that is simply sinister, especially when coupled with the endless puff pieces written for and about him in the msm and that words and deeds go virtually unquestioned except by the likes of us.

  26. ScotPatsFan,

As I understand it, Rangers International Football Club PLC now owns The Rangers Football Club Ltd.

As well as plc status I think it is another attempt to pedal the line that there is a company that owns the separate football club. Clearly the club is a company, and this is still the case even when it is owned by another company.
