STARFELT SWERVES SALES TALK

CARL STARFELT has brushed aside suggestions he may be heading for the English top flight at the end of the season.

The Sweden international defender has featured in some reports and rumours since the January transfer window that he may be nearing the end of his time at the champions.

Starfelt was one of Ange Postecoglou’s first buys for his new-look Celtic when he arrived in a £4.2million switch from Russian outfit Rubin Kazan in July 2021.

He has been an unsung hero in the Hoops success story since the Greek-Australian gaffer inherited a shambles of the previous term when the team limped in without a trophy for the first time in 11 years.

SWEDE DREAMS…Carl Starfelt and Sead Haksabanovic with the newly-won League Cup last month.

Starfelt had just met his new team-mates at Lennoxtown two days before he was pitched in for a quickfire debut in the 2-1 loss to Hearts at Tynecastle in the 2021/22 league opener.

However, with the introduction of Cameron Carter-Vickers as a partner in the middle of the rearguard, he settled into life at Parkhead and played his part in the Premiership victory and the League Cup win over Hibs just six months after his recruitment.

The 27-year-old centre-back is currently with the Swedish international suad for the matches against Belgium and Azerbaijan.

Back in his homeland, he has been quizzed on life at Celtic and Starfelt, speaking to Fotbollskanalen, said: “It’s fantastic. Of course, it is something special to win great titles and it is something you really strive for as a football player.

“To be able to be at a club where it is expected of you and where it means so much to so many people is also incredible and a great feeling.

“We dominate in matches and get a lot of the ball. Defending high, and having a lot of play, as well, I have had to develop many, many areas. It’s a big club where you are expected to win, so you really have to push yourself to develop all the time.”

Asked about links to England, Starfelt responded: “No, I like it very much as it is right now.

“My agent will take care of the rest and then if something comes up, we’ll deal with it then.

“But I have no thoughts right now except for Celtic.”
