Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

I worry that the alternative is already agreed and that it favours whatever incarnation of the establishments team that is around at the time- you know the SFA will do their best to keep the zombies zombies plying their trade in the seasons to come

  2. Its obvious to us and to rest of Scottish Soccer that Gilmour is a Hun and has scuppered the deal as a favour to Chuck. Everyone in authority is furious at Gilmour and by extension must also be furious with his puppet master. I cannot for the life of me see them agreeing to any deal which would now fast forward Sevco.

I now expect the status quo to remain for next year, I expect everyone to go off in a sulk for a few months and then reconstruction negotiations will most likely recommence and will kick in the season after next.

St Mirren fan at work today >> Chuckles would have had to come up with £500k for Gilmour vote wouldn’t have gave it away cheaper lol#HeKnows

  4. Anybody think Gilmour has just cost his club more than reconstruction ever would have? Silly rabbit.

Breaking News : Rangers investigate Rangers

Rangers has announced over the weekend that they intend to investigate Rangers. At a three-hour board meeting Rangers grilled themselves and were unconvinced by the answers they received. As a result, they have decided to investigate themselves. As they do not trust themselves to ask themselves questions they will ask someone else to ask them questions.

The witness making the allegations – Craig Whyte – will not be interviewed (he is a liar and cannot be trusted) and the other main witness – Charles Green – will have no part to play in the investigation (he is a self-confessed liar and the subject of the investigation), other than answering the same questions that he was asked before and getting the same answers which we refused point blank to believe and so decided to ask someone else to ask him the same questions and get the same answers he gave us which we refused to believe.

We – Rangers – will leave no stone unturned in getting to the truth about Rangers and if that means asking probing questions of Rangers, then Rangers can rest assured that Rangers will not flinch in facing Rangers and demanding that Rangers answer questions posed by Rangers. Rangers need to know what they know at Rangers and if we do not know then Rangers will be the first to know. That is a promise we make to our fans.

Were st mirren and ross county not the teams that green offered to buy the 3,000 season tickets for when voting for their relegation?

What else will it be if not 12? Any ideas what is behind the question asked of Doncaster?

Wow. Someone just dumped 50,000 Sevco shares for the all-time-low price of 58 pence.

Who in their right mind is spending over £25k on The Rangers shares at the present time? Fools and their money eh?

We have an opportunity to boycott Ross County next month.

  10. Wow indeed Robert, that is a biggie. A guy selling that amount would be a step above the average fan, obviously panicking that the whole lot could go up in smoke and is prepared to take a heavy loss just to get out.

  11. RANGERS have this evening released the following statement after the meeting of SPL clubs at Hampden Park earlier today.

A club spokesperson said: “We note the outcome of today’s SPL vote on League reconstruction.

“Rangers has already openly talked about what we believe were constructive proposals and hope that these will be considered at some point in the future.

“The vast majority of supporters did not want 12-12-18 and the two clubs who voted against this should not be singled out for criticism. They stood up for what they and their fans believe.”

    Statement seals St Mirrens fate

  12. Roberttressell – very few (other than the brokers keeping the market liquid). Since RFC shares started trading somewhere in the region of 3.5M have changed hands and I’d estimate over 3M of those are sells.

  13. Totally confused by this vote today. However, it’s OK guys. Big Derek is on Clyde so the situation will be crystal clear within the next er …few weeks!

Yes, but someone must be buying them. The market makers aren’t sitting on ~3m shares are they?

  16. Can anyone explain why Chuckles has not been charged with the offensive behaviour act , or is that just for wee Bhoys stepping onto the main road, walking to the game?

  17. Providing Sevco don’t skip a season on their way up to the Premier Division, I’m not overly bothered by the reconstruction plans going down the toilet. I would personally favour 3 by 14 team Divisions with a top 6 bottom 8 split as a half way house towards an eventual 18 team SPL playing every team Home & Away. That would mean when the cheats do come back, they would only pollute our Stadium once a year and we would only need to boycott the Bigotdome once a year,

    kevinlasvegas, Kayal33,

Last summer “sporting integrity” was the buzz phrase, now you guys want to boycott a team whose chairman actually shows some. Why???????

  19. On the face of it this vote is no bad thing. A ridiculous set up has been voted down. Changing the rules of promotion and relegation 80% of the way through the season has been rejected.

What we need now is a clear agreement that the league set up next season will be the same as that in force this season. Discussions on a new single body to run league football (if not one to run the whole of the game) can now take place with a view to implementation next summer. That new body can set its own voting structure and finance/ prize money rules.

  20. Stairheedrammy on

Would the delay in combining the governing bodies be part of the save sevco vote- keeping agents orange, orange and orange in place to keep manipulating the rules to keep them in the league?

  21. Gilmour is totally exposed as Chuck’s patsy, there is now no way that the SPL Clubs will allow Chuck to benefit as they are mad as hell with both him and Gilmour.

Auld gits like me remember the 18 team league pre 1975. It was turgid. The old CP was half empty every game as we were treated to watching the likes of Arbroath, Airdrie, clyde, dumbarton etc.

  23. Interesting statement from Spartans – my other season ticket …

SPL clubs vote ‘No’ to change Posted on Monday, April 15th, 2013

We are very disappointed to learn of the outcome of today’s SPL vote on league reconstruction. Like many involved in Scottish football, Spartans believe that something significant is needed if we are to safeguard and develop the game in this country. As an ambitious club we had, obviously, welcomed the idea of a pyramid structure and the prospect that our national leagues would become inclusive rather than exclusive. We had believed that other clubs felt the same and that this time action would accompany the rhetoric.

However, while this decision was disappointing, like all forward-thinking clubs, we will continue to look for opportunities to progress and strengthen the sport for all and endeavour to work with like-minded clubs to make it more equitable.

So if this was to be rushed through for sponsorship reasons – what exactly were these sponsors told? That a certain club would be in the SPL next year?
