Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

  1. £39,000 worth of Sevco shares dumped at 4.29 pm, follows on from the sale of £18,500 earlier today

  2. kevinlasvegas on

I bet the guy who sold those shares just shouted “abandon ship” and the market guy knew exactly what he was talking about, SOLD. and the cry was no shares. ;)

  3. Sitting out the afternoon to see if the price picked up after the sale of 30,000 shares for 61 pence per share just before one o’clock cost the 50,000-share seller £1,500.

  4. I reckon something like 5% of RFC Shares are just floating around the market waiting to be bought. Certainly the ratio of sells to buys is around 9 to 1.

Is anybody shorting this? You could be sitting on a pile by now if you were.

No doubt Chico will be on soon claiming an exclusive about an SPL2 while waiting outside Ibrox for Eoin Jess to appear…….

  10. Like most of us, I’m not sure what all the benefits would have been from a carried vote today.

BUT, (that’s a big but), my rule of thumb in a situation when I don’t know the facts, is to see who is for and who is against.

That ten SPL clubs were definitely for and most SFL1 clubs were rumoured to be for, then iy would appear that it would have been a forward step.

Perhaps it is a good thing to have exposed who are compromised in this result, rather than a bald numerical statement.

St.Mirren are very seriously compromised. It must be some major bribe that has been offered, otherwise, we would be falling back on the masonic conspiracy model.

It will be interesting and perhaps necessary for all SPL clubs to make a statement, which has to be as unambiguous as possible.

Ross Co. used the ST uncertainty, plus shareholder and fans’ wishes, as their reasons and stuck to it.

St.Mirren claimed that 11-1 was the obstacle and when that was removed, they still reneged.

BTW, was it not the late director, Mr. Mc.Geoch who invited Whyte’s pal into the Boardroom?

    Apologies if wrong.

  11. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

Just heard…….no Celtic supporter (or any other SPL Club supporter) should attend ANY away fixture against St Mirren next season…..it is OBVIOUS that greengo influenced their Chairman with (empty) promises……..not so sure about Ross County, since they may have had specific reason(s)’ but we’ll soon find out…..

There is surely no way they could even contemplate inviting sevco into any SPL2 ……. If they were to, I would be finished with football for good, since that would be corruption of the highest order……having said that, we have been assured on numerous occasions that sevco would not be fastracked under any circumstances…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster has refused to rule out the possibility of an “SPL 2” and would offer no guarantees that next season will start with a 12-team league.

Plans for a full league restructure and a 12-12-18 set-up failed to received enough votes to progress at an SPL meeting on Monday. St Mirren and Ross County voted against the plans, angering some of their fellow clubs.

The collapse of the plans, which would have merged the SPL and the Scottish Football League, have led to speculation that plans for a second-tier being introduced in the SPL with leading SFL clubs invited to join.

Asked if he would rule out an “SPL 2” in the future, Doncaster said: “I’m not going to discount anything going forward.

“The clubs will express their own will in their own time. Ultimately, the executive team here are servants of the clubs.

“It’s for the clubs to express their will, what they want to see, and for us to carry that out.”

Pressed on whether next season would begin with a 12-team SPL, the chief executive would not commit.

“I’m not going to make any predictions about the future,” he said.

  16. There’s only one vote the counts.

Follow the fans’ money. And their feet.

The chairmen are continuing with the pretence that it’s the fans job to follow and theirs to lead.

    The game is up.

Some chairmen are coming to terms with this new reality.
