Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

  1. Eric the half a hun on RC there saying PL wanted to suspend the 11-1 for one day to force through the changes. Is that right? – haven’t heard that anywhere else.

He wasn’t corrected by the panel and BFDJ is as sharp as a tack usually!

  2. Michael @18:17 it could be as simple as I sell to you and agree to buy back next day, next week or next year. we are not privy to such shenanigans.

  3. It is not Docasters call to set up an SPL2, status quo will be the structure next season and if they go into admin during the close season they will incur a points penalty based on the points they accrued this year.

  4. Celtic Football Club Statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 15 Apr, 2013 18:27

FOLLOWING today´s vote by the SPL clubs on league reconstruction proposals, Celtic have released the following statement.

´Clearly we are disappointed that today’s proposals have not been voted through. We believe this is a huge missed opportunity for the whole of Scottish football.

We were pleased a number of months ago to have achieved unanimity across all clubs on the proposals for the way forward. We do not understand the rationale now offered for rejecting these proposals and the unwillingness to take the game forward positively. It is unfortunate that the vision shown by the vast majority of clubs is now not shared by all.

We believe these positive proposals would have fundamentally enhanced Scottish football for the future.

Neil Doncaster has an impossible job to do at times and he and his team have worked tirelessly to initiate positive change in Scottish football. They should be applauded for their efforts in this regard and we would like also to place on record our thanks to outgoing SPL Chairman, Ralph Topping.

We understand today’s events are unfortunate and the implications for the game will generate some uncertainty. However, Celtic has strong foundations and will look forward.

We have enjoyed a tremendous season, we are on the verge of securing back to back SPL titles and yesterday we ensured our place in this season’s Scottish Cup final. This, at the end of a season where we joined Europe’s elite as one of the top 16 clubs across the continent.

While we have not reached agreement on these proposals, our club is fundamentally in a very healthy position and now we move on. We thank our fans for their continued support as we move forward.´

Doncaster not saying what the current Sky deal is worth. Previous deals were trumpeted loudly…..

  6. Will agent Ogilvie in Hundump be disappointed by the vote today.

I think Boycotts are divicive among fans.

But if on a personal level if (like me) till it has been proved otherwise that there was not collusion between certain chairmen.

You decide you will not give your money to that club

I feel you are perfectly entitled to make that choice .

    Kayal33,

Fans of a number of clubs held polls and in most cases returned results of approx. 80:20 against 12-12-18.

As far as I have seen on this site the figures are similar amongst Celtic fans.

Last summer the chairmen made a point of stating it was the fans wishes when they voted against a new club joining the SPL. This time most didn’t ask the fans because they knew they wouldn’t like the answer.

Reform is needed but SPL vote was all or nothing. Most fans want change but not 12-12-18.

Not if it has a detrimental effect on the whole of Scottish football it isn’t.

  11. Ron Bacardi @18:33 there’s a process known as “bed and breakfasting” whereby shares are bought, held overnight and sold back at an agreed price. This allows gains/losses to be realised or transferred, allowances to be used and tax liability to be reduced. It’s legal.

  12. That’s twice now that clown Graham Spiers has said Doncaster must go, what is his agenda.

Those against are always more vocal and more likely to fill in online polls. If they truly wanted to ask the fans they should, after the different options are explained in more detail than its been done, ask every SPL club to send a standard questionnaire to all ST holders (could be done online as well) and ask them what they think league reconstruction should look like. By doing that they will then find out what the fans really want and not rely on polls where only a few thousand bother. I think you would then see a far different result than in the narrow online polls currently being quoted as if they are gospel.

I personally think the problem is there are too many teams for the size of country we live in.

I’d go for a 12-12 (or even 10-10) and have a regional pyramid below that.

Clearly Chuckles has some CW dirt on Gilmour. As the govan calamity careers towards a wall, Celticcan now step back from the mess with a clear conscience.

    Kayal33,

Agreed, it could have been handled better but the SPL and most of the clubs seem to have been very secretive about the details and made a point of NOT involving the fans.

I hope they use the time well and come up with something that all parties can agree on which doesn’t involve fast tracking you-know-who (if they survive that long!). Get something agreed for season 14/15.

I’d like to see a single governing body and less teams at national as a starting point.

  19. Just been on the Official site trying to clarify if Kayal is suspended for the SCF. No info. Anybody?

Also, noticed that tickets for the last 2 home games are £20/£5. Interesting pricing – is this the sign of things to come next season?

  20. If Gilmour us unconnected to Green I’d suggest he needs to make that clear ASAP.

Because, with Sevco releasing a supportive statement, it really is beginning to look as if the buddies are doing Greens dirty work.

The curious case of the Sevco associate allowed into the St Mirren boardroom now has all the smell of the Wategate burglary… Could this odd incident be key to this whe sorry saga?

  21. Spiers now trying to get Doncaster to speculate that there could be 2 top leagues of 10 teams. Doncaster not biting but not beyond the realms of possibility.

This is like watching a magician and not a very good one at that.

We’re all supposed to be keeping our eyes on the left hand (Vote) while the right hand is working the magic (And allowing Rangers into a new 2nd tier)

If this happens them the game will be finished for good.

  23. kevinlasvegas on

SG is dirty, simples i think theres enough evidence. the whole showing the oldco his books and the CG meeting is enough for me.

    KLV

  24. its simple really, if spl try to push through spl2 there will still be 7 teams ahead of sevco in the cue, any plans to invite (outwith merit) clubs will be smashed up before it gets off the ground by clubs that know their supporters will walk away.

    celtic will go on regardless

    hail hail

  25. Bada Bing – yep I don’t think Doncaster is going to get taken for a mug by Sevco again. PL puts the blame firmly with SG.

  26. Somebody send for Captain Mainwaring or the Vicar of Dibley, we need some kind of Leadership ffs!

  27. !!Bada Bing!! on

weeminger-I think some are looking for a body for the failed plans,Regan,Longmuir,Ballantyne possibly trying to give up Doncaster,to save their own skins.

  28. After Sevco committed suicide and found themselves in the 3rd div, Doncaster, Ogilvie and Regan made a horrendous blunder with the armageddon and social unrest drivel

Thats twice in the last few weeks i have listened now to Doncaster face the music on BBC sportsound, and i have to grudgingly admit he has handled it very professionally, kept cool with some very good answers

If only a CEO from a club in Govan would place himself for an hour on BBC with Spiers and English to be grilled in the same manner? who owns your club, who owns the stadium, were you and Craig Whyte involved together with Sevco 5088, when will we see a balance sheet of The Rangers……..
