Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

Ok, even assuming Sevco can actually afford to buy St Mirren, I still don’t understand why they would vote against retructuring.

    ————————

Say your vote helped someone who was losing over £1m per month increase ticket prices as they will be not be at bottom of pile in new set up.

Say loss making someone may even get a leg up to a higher league thanks to your vote.

And say grateful someone could maybe offer you a better price for your assets(no laughing at the back) that you are trying to get off your hands but cant get the price you want off anyone that doesn’ need your help.

All completely hypothetical of course (IMHO)

  2. BBC live feed on the SPL vote doing its best to appease the zombies and their ‘get it right up you Lawwell’ approach…

You have nailed it! Chuckles could not increase his season ticket prices if the 12-12-18 went ahead.

Who will still buy a season ticket for Sevco for next season is still yet to be seen…

  4. Taken from TSFM

Presumably because St Mirren and Ross county refused to remove reconstruction from the protected voting category. I would guess!!!!!!

Gilmour is up to something. I suspect it is not good news if you are a Buddy – he is clearly part of some kind of Rangers 3 plan when the TRFC licence has to be withdrawn and the ownership of Ibrox reverts to Whyte – expect an asset sale or long term lease to “Real Rangers” men abandoning the history – regrettably because of the antics of bogeymen Green and Whyte ( and of course their names should have given it all away) – at least until the SFA find a means to allow its transfer – for a fiver possibly – and shifting and renaming Saint Mirren as “The Eternal Glasgow Rangers – Then, Now, Forever

Spoken to club rep who was at #LeagueReconstruction meeting.Angry/ bemused-questioned motives of #StMirren & #RossCounty.Suggested collusion

  6. Has anyone ever met or seen Stewart Reagan in the flesh? What in the name of the wee man do they actually do at the SFA? SFA?

How long can governing bodies go on ignoring the carry on with Sevco?

It’s the equivalent of Sir (Not for long) James Crosby being allowed to do his own investigation into HBoS.

Well when all is said and done there is only one club in Scotland with money and that’s US. So Sevco can have all their pals onside and they can all be skint together. SPL Skint Pals League. lol ;) Here all week,

  8. Skullduggery rules ok……what agreement was made? There is no doubt that green and gilmour have something simmering on the back burner. Ross County are as bad and should be bhoycotted too. Game loomimg, away support please take note.

The time has come to flex our muscles and take our rightful place. The whole debacle has gone on too long. Dump sevco and all of its hangers on.

Genuine question and delighted to be miles out with thinking(AGAIN or AS USUAL) use as appropriate:))

just something niggling away at me.

  10. SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster: “We had 10 votes in favour, which was one short of the majority required. There’s a sense of real disappointment within the SPL board.

“I feel sorry for the professional clubs outside the SPL who will feel the weight of this decision perhaps more keenly than many.

“We have the status quo and there’s been a lot of time and money spent from a huge number of people to try to take the game forward.

“There’s still a great deal of work to be done and I’ll be carrying out that work on behalf of all 12 clubs over the summer.

“I believe very much in the SPL going forward… I think there’s a line about not walking away that’s been used in the past.

Time for another breakaway. Take the 10 that voted yes along with the top 9 in Div 1 & QOS as Div 2 champions and go 2 leagues of 10. Let St Mirren and Ross County rot in the lower leagues with the zombies. No trickle down money, all cash stays with top 20.

  13. Funny thing is I thought the 12-12-18 was pretty strange & had I a vote I don’t think Id supprt….but seeing the actions of SG of St M, I can’t help thinking the set up was a fearsome one for somebody.

Obviously not a large majority of SPL clubs.

Absolutely certainly not the near 100% of SFL1 clubs.

Very little strong opinions either way (as far as is known) by SFL2 & 3 clubs.

ONE club was CERTAINLY fearful of the outcome.

Not sure enough clubs would agree to dumping RC & StM for effectively using their democratic right.

  21. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Ah, so the quicker Sevco are playing in a higher division, the sooner they will be on a more solid financial footing, which will then hasten an agreement already struck to purchase Gilmours shares?

Then what? Sevco has a controlling interest in The Rangers and St Mirren. What happens then?

Is Gilmour that stupid? It all seems a bit flakey to me.

Thanks all for the input. I don’t doubt there’s an agenda at play here, but I’m still unsure what it is.

Question is – who would HAVE that many shares, other than the ones that are locked in from selling?

  25. kevinlasvegas on

The only reason they commented on CG last week was because of two things, Firstly The Uefa anti racism drive that was announce the same day the SFA commented and secondly the Craig whyte.CG connection was only asked to be explained after the police raids, It was a case of jump or be pushed or I’m pretty sure neither thing would have happened. Why did it take 4/5 days for SFA to comment on CG’s racist comments? Sevco defo have something on the SFA (big wigs) just like the bigot team before them. ” if we’re going down your coming with us”

I’m very far from being an expert, but I would guess some of the gullible groups that swallowed all the puff about it being the universe’s most successful ever club, now debt-free and with a great trajectory.

All those nice stock-market types couldn’t be wrong about that, could they?

Last year everyone was celebrating that the SPL teams listened to their fans when there was a vote to accept a new club into the SPL. Quite right too.

Now we have Celtic fans shouting for Ross County to rot in the lower leagues for…. listening to their fans…. incredible.

It seems that over the past few weeks fans of most, if not all, clubs were against 12-12-18 so what has changed?

Ross County chairman Roy McGregor voted as he did after consultation with the fans. Roy is also a personal friend of Fergus McCann and is a big admirer of Celtic and the way the club is run. Source: His message in the match programme for the first Celtic game at Dingwall and various interviews he has done this season.

St. Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour appears to be following a different agenda.
