Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

Those 130 people who could be bothered to give him feed back when he asked how Ross County should vote must be delighted.

Apart from Sevco I would normally hate to see smaller clubs die as their supporters put their time and money into them knowing there will be no trophies or glory. BUT I think it is time that clubs do start to die in order for Scottish Football to see sense.

    SPL2 fixture list-

    Sevco Galacto-diddies v Sevco reserves.

    Sevco Colts v Locomotiv Sevko

    Sevco Legneds v St Mirren.

  3. No major surprise that the vote went against, always thought it was fatally flawed anyway. Surely those leading our game can come up with a much better format than that which was proposed.

Any new structure MUST be based on current placings only, not by invite.

Not heard how any new body would be organized, surely most them would not be required, who would hold leading positions etc….why no vote to re-structure / no confidence in SFA who are badly at fault in most of the problems within our game today.

Going by the last weekends games, our game seems quite healthy which is more than can be said for the old heart….defence (Yes Lenny we need one – makes Brazil look solid at the back)

  4. Peter Lawwell clearly stated this resolution or the status quo in a statement at the weekend on the website.

I expect the status quo for next season, especially afte the comments today by Aberdeen.

Howdy Bhoys, Hope everyone has recovered from yesterdays rollercoaster.

Sorry for your loss Lennybhoy, RIP.

Gimour was gottten to the day we played saints just there and what ever he has been promised has been for him alone and i dont imagine for 1 minute that the fans will be happy about this as they already have their suspicions about gilmore, Good on Aberdeen for not missing them and i fully expect other chairmen to hammer him through out the day, R county is a weird one, playing favourites aside.

Boycott for paisley after this i think.

  6. So St Mirren use the 11-1 voting system which they oppose to vote down a 9-3 voting system which they didnt oppose.

    My head hurts

  7. Sad day for Scottish Football in general. Given the time constraints involved, it seems increasingly unlikely that there could be change in the League set up for 2013-2013. Sevco will then be in Division 2 next season and two more years away from the SPL. Shame really.

  8. I presume that we now boycott St Mirren following their disgraceful deal with the devil.

CUP FINAL – no Wanyama, Kayal or Brown is great news, for Hibs. Who is going to win the ball for us in the middle of the park to create chances / protect the defence? Honestly think we will be over run and on the back foot thru out, hopefully some insightful CQNers can ease my concerns.

They were opposed because of 11-1 would remain. 9-3 was put on the table and they still said no.

  11. Grew up on stories of the Coronation Cup. We always seem to win one off competitions. Indeed, the Big One was presented for the first time in Lisbon. I wish they would create a new European Cup. We will probably win it, as usual.

Heard about the failure of the reconstruction plans on Radio 5 Live. According to Forsyth, it wasn’t St Mirren or even Ross County to blame. No, it was Peter Lawwell who called McGregor of Ross County names.

Can someone tell me if I understand correctly what is going.

Are we asserting that Stuart Gilmour is a Sevco fan and has used his poistion as St Mirren chairman to scupper league reconstruction in order to benefit Sevco either by a) ensuring the status quo remains, which sees Sevco promoted up a division and allowing them to justify higher season ticket prices, thereby alleviating some cash flow pressures or b) somehow ushering in an SPL2 that will see Sevco invited to join?

If it’s the latter can someone explain where is the link between the SPL voting against restructuring and the need for an SPL2 and more importantly, what’s in it for St Mirren?

Or have I missed the point – there’s nothing in it for St Mirren and it’s only Gilmour putting the interests of Sevco ahead of his club and Scottish football in general?

  14. Peter Lawwell more or less said Celtic had been persuaded to help out the rest of Scottish Football and put up a £1M. He said if the propsals were refused the money would be spent by Celtic in the summer and Scottish Football could look after itself.

Clink\o/-The rest of the SPL Board called Gilmour’s bluff,he was on Sportsound last week and kept repeating that nothing would change ,as long as the 11-1 was in place.9-3 was offered and still wanted to stick by 11-1?

RobinBhoy-I thought the only period of the game when we looked reasonably solid at the back was when Charlie went to CB.Wilson could be bullied and outmuscled by a 12 year old.

  22. Has anyone worked out why Kayal is suspended for the cup final yet?

Celtic_First pointed out that he has not been noted as picking up a yellow card in any other tie this season. Surely a single yellow card does not carry forward from one competition to the next?

Relax,Falkirk midfield ,of teenagers, completely controlled the game against Hibrnian,in the first half, before running out of steam.

  24. It should be in the hands of the fans if we want to sanction a save sevco league . I think there maybe a bit of agreement between fans of all other clubs who voted yes today to scupper what idea to include them that gets mooted , so lets hear the views from the fans of other clubs , as like us they know the real reason it was voted down .

The Blogger formerly Known, I dont know the ins and out of it either, but SG did say last month that we was for it and the whole of scottish football rode on the change and then after CG met him two weeks back he cam out with an off the record statement about changing his mind and today its on the record and looking at Phils ” buddies” comment i think thats the case.
