Stein, Famous Five, Lizzie and Phil

No disrespect to Falkirk, but I was delighted Hibs overturned the three goal deficit on Saturday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  It was almost a miraculous victory for a team in bad need of a miracle.  Things were not always this way.

Celtic and Hibernian meet in next month’s Scottish Cup final sixty years and six days after the teams met in the Coronation Cup final.  Back then Hibs were hot favourites.  Celtic had won only two leagues in the previous quarter century whereas Hibs, with their Famous Five forward-line, won three leagues in the previous six seasons, losing a fourth on goal average.

These were hard times to be a Celtic fan.  Two league titles in the 20s, two in the 30s and one in the 50s (a double winning team in 1954), ensured that a couple of generations of fans survived on little more than folklore.  So the team who won the Coronation Cup in 1953, before securing that double a year later, had a significant impact on fans then, which you’ll easily learn if you speak to one.

Charlie Tully, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock and Willie Fernie all played in the Coronation Cup final, as did Neily Mochan and a man called Stein, the captain.  A 117,000 crowd of Celtic and Hibs fans ensured Hampden was covered in banners of green.

Apparently Hibs were by far the stronger team but Neily Mochan scored a cracker in the first half and Johnny Bonnar played the game of his life in goal before Jimmy Walsh scored a late second.

“Said Phillip to Liz watch the Celts don’t step in…….”

  1. I think the main problem was that it was an “all or nothing” vote today. Some aspects of the plan were laudable, including better revenue distribution to all teams but I think the idea that a team can finish 9th in SPL after 22 games and then have to start on 0 playing a team finishing 4th in SFL1 is pretty ludicrous.

I can understand Ross County and St Mirren’s objections to this as it is difficult enough for those teams to sell season tickets and tickets in general knowing that all games are going to be in SPL, but how do they price a ticket that would include 11 SPL games and then either 7 SPL ones or 7 in an interim league.

I think at the minute, plans for reconstruction are akin to re-arranging the deckchairs on the titanic.

If there is to be change, it has to be from the ground up and needs to be thought through very carefully and to the benefit of all clubs, not just those who are fortunate at the time of the vote to be in the SPL.

  2. Hearts chief executive David Southern on what happens next:

“We go back to our day jobs. We go back to a 12-team SPL, one team relegated, one team up from the SFL and it’s business as usual, but with an even tougher economic climate for clubs.

“We were very close today and it would’ve moved the game on tremendously. It would’ve refreshed things for the supporters, broadcasters and commercial partners. We had a chance for progress but unfortunately we haven’t been able to do that.

“Don’t now see where we will go. I think maybe now the onus is on the Scottish FA to become actively involved to try and steer the game to better waters.

“If I can use an analogy; it’s like we’re all in a burning building, but there’s certain people who don’t want to step outside the burning building because it’s raining outside That’s probably the best way I can describe it.”

I’m sure I know the answer, and that is one of the most unnecessary posts I’ve seen in a while, coming from you it’s not surprising!

  4. Ross County were opposed since meeting with their fans (all 150 of them). There concern was selling season tickets when they didn’t know what league they were in post split. They never changed their minds from that.

St Mirren only came out last week and said they were against. The fact that this happened within a week of Chuckles being their guest at game v us has given rise to much suspicion over their apparent change of mind. The fact that Gilmour last week said the 11-1 vote was the deal breaker for them, and this was apparently removed as an issue at meeting today with an agreement to move to 9-3 in future, is why the bulk of the anger is at St Mirren.

  5. SPL statement

“At this morning’s general meeting, all 12 Scottish Premier League clubs were present to consider proposals for restructuring of the Scottish professional game. The proposals would have delivered:

    * an expansion of play-offs, creating more opportunities for promotion and relegation between divisions

    * a single merged league with meaningful games at every level

    * a pyramid structure for the entire game

    * opportunities for materially increased revenues coming into the game

    * substantial redistribution of revenues to lower league clubs

The proposals required 11 votes in favour to be approved. Ten votes in favour were received, with two against. The proposals were not therefore approved.

  6. SPL statement cont

“During the meeting, and in an effort to break the deadlock, an amendment to the League’s rules on voting was proposed. This major and progressive change would have allowed future league structure to be determined by a 9-3 vote, rather than the current 11-1 majority.

“Prior to the meeting, a number of clubs had suggested that voting change would enable league structure change to be voted through. Unfortunately, this amendment was also defeated in principle on a show of hands, with the same two clubs voting against.

“The SPL board wishes to express its sincere thanks to every member of the SPL’s Restructure Working Group and to Harper Macleod for their hard work over many months. The chief executive and his team have worked tirelessly over the last three years to bring about positive change in the SPL.

“The board would like to place on record its deep disappointment that proposals to benefit the entire game in Scotland have been blocked.”

  8. SPL chairman Ralph Topping

“An overwhelming majority of SPL clubs voted for these proposals to go through. The proposals foundered on the opposition of two clubs. The package involved concessions from all clubs and was for the betterment of Scottish football as a whole.

“I would like to thank those who have supported these proposals, including those full-time professional clubs outside of the SPL who find themselves let down by today’s vote. Scottish football needs to change. I had previously announced my intention to step down once a successor had been identified.

    Who runs that?

Do they need the agreement of the current SPL?

Will the SPL have a say who is in it?

Could we actually have THREE different leagues and their governing bodies in this small country?

Next Time Gilmour bangs on about how St Mirren are living within their means, somebody in the MSM should ask him why in that case they have lost £300,000 a year for the last 3 years.

Their cash in the bank at the last set of accounts was just about enough to 2 weeks overheads, and their current wages to turnover ratio is nearly 71%

This was a club who were awarded a government grant of £1.766 million in 2008. Without Scottish taxpayers money where would this “well run ” club be sitting today

I don’t claim to know why they voted against, but when Gilmour said it was because of 11-1 , I said at the time that was a smokescreen , and that is the word coming from everyone who was at the meeting who has commented today

For a club who would not be able to exist in its current form without the huge money given to them by Scottish taxpayers, they were unwilling to extend a helping hand to those in desperate need within Scottish football.

  13. It’s telling that the chairmen think they have to explain simple to wee us by way of analogy and panic inducing metaphors.

Some of us have already concluded it’s about resuscitating Rangers before the nil by mouth notice is removed.

  15. SPL2 ??? So we need another divisionof a failed league? This is now getting all a bit Lewis Carrol. The SPL had been behind a cataclysmic decline in developing Scottish football and in producing quality footballers.

The Sky money was wasted on Chief Executives, Directors of Football , a clueless SPL board and on lining agents pockets as they filled our teams with useless foreign “talent”.

The youth development programmes are now being cut back at almost every club , but the board rooms and executive offices are still well staffed.

  16. Anyone know how many SPL games chuckles has been to this season?

  19. The chairman of an SFL club let it be known 3 weeks ago that they were very much in favour of the changes.

He let it be known that he expected the changes to be voted down , and expected the response to be an SPL 2 would be suggested.

SPL 2 would be by invitation.

He expected that his club would be invited.

He also expected Sevco to be invited.

He was only expressing his opinion, but he has been correct so far.

I have no evidence but I believe he knew that the Ross County chairman was going to vote against the changes ( before it became public knowledge) and that they are the ones who believe an SPL 2 is an option.

    Time will tell.

  22. Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne

“The vote was no unfortunately. One club in particular you need to ask exactly what their agenda is, (that club) is St Mirren.

“There was a major concession on the table today, and if it didn’t deliver, then the opportunity was there to look at it down the line within two to three years.

“It’s the status quo. The offer of changing the reconstruction rules was rejected by the two clubs (St Mirren and Ross County). Nobody can see the logic behind that.

“This is going to have major implications for Scottish football in the short-term and could potentially damage the game in the long-term.

“I am very angry because today we have let down Scottish football and one person in particular.

“St Mirren Football club, have really go to go and pose themselves the question: ‘why they are prepared to put the rest of Scottish football in jeopardy’ just because of their own selfish interests?”

  23. SPL2 ??? We do not need another division of a failed league. The SPL has oveseen the greatest decline in footballing and footballer standards in this football mad country.

It`s all looking like a Lewis Carrol story, where will this end?

The Sky money that cane into the SPL was wasted on Chief Executives, Directors of Football, SPL board members then on agents who filled teams with overpaid second rate foreigners as it was the “sexy” thing to do.

Now we have youth development being cut back at most clubs whils the plush executives sit back and wonder where it all went wrong.

It does not matter what you call the league , we need competition and a distribution of income that is fair.

  25. SFL statement:

“We believe that positive change for the good of the game can still be achieved, but this will require compromise, and a more flexible approach to some key issues. If all parties agree to this approach and some realistic time frames can be agreed, then the current momentum for positive change need not be lost.

“The board of the Scottish Football League will meet on Thursday to review where we are and a further statement may be appropriate at that time.”

Is Longmuir going to put up the £1M that Celtic were to get this change across the line?

Celtic tried, keep the money and let Scottish Football and its love-in with Sevco burn.
