Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

Agree. Gambling with CL qualification when there clearly is money available to spend, does not come across as ‘safeguarding the club’s future’ to me.

Another striker must arrive before Wednesday. Give ourselves the best possible chance to qualify.

  5. If we do sign a striker before Wednesday, will he play? I know he will be eligible (one new player can be signed up to 24 hours before game) but would we put an untried, possibly not 100% fit player into a game of such importance?

    Kalimera my friends in Celtic,

What fractious bunch we are. Anyone would thought we had sold our two best players and not replaced them. Well we huvvnae and we huvv.

Hoops was nowhere near our top two players and we brought in two centre halves, a forward and we have big Rogic to play yet. Lenny, in whom we trust remember, is on record saying another one, possibly two, strikers will be signed imminently.

What is the story? Why all the angst? You could be supporting a deid, third tier, skint, apocalyptic club with a useless fat bassa manager and a burnt oot bus and deluding yourself that everything is rosy.

Last day in the ole Hellenic heaven for me today. It occurs to me that my time here could only have been enhanced had The Exiled Tim’s pool had been transported. Maybe when I get home Bournesouprecipe can show me how to superimpose a photie of the TET pool onto a photie of my place here.

Today I will mostly be playing Lilo golf, readying myself for the real

Challenges of the next few weeks. Moray old course is today’s venue. An exquisite links with a monumental finishing stretch. When you consider that the 15th, 180 yards Par 3, tee up by the shore, wind off your left shoulder and 170 yards of gorse between you and the landing area is stroke 18 on the card, you can judge the challenge that awaits me this morning. The 15th is of course a birdie opportunity to likes of BJMac or Rubicon but to me, I will struggle to make bogey, even in Lilo golf.

The 17th is a particular favourite of mine. A three shot, double dog leg, right to left, around the dunes, Par 5. Just making the fairway off the tee is a feat. Then onto one of the finest finishing holes in golf before retiring to the bar for a couple of glasses of the finest Glenrothes malt and a wee bet on how many three putts my fellow golfers have on the devilishly difficult 18th green.

Some free advertising for Sevco in The Herald – by official appointment:

“RANGERS is launching a new membership drive for companies keen to have a formal relationship with the football club.

Commercial business manager Raj Athwal has previously run a similar initiative in England but believes this is the first time it has been tried in Scotland.

In exchange for an annual subscription fee, costing between £1495 and £10,000, companies become part of the By Official Appointment (BOA) scheme.

Rangers will then list all the BOA members on its website and give them advertising space in programmes for league matches.”

This formal relationship to be closely followed by a formal relationship with insolvency practitioners.

  13. Seems theres too many people concerned about the (reputed) cash surplus we have at the moment…….perhaps if they ran their own financial affairs as prudently as CFC we wouldn’t. need to cutting 100 from a SB?

Currently stil in Moscow until Monday and the world looks different from here…….

The Soviet Union basically collapsed because its economic system couldn’t compete with the West……they went bankrupt essentially because they spent more than they generated year on year……..

    Sound familiar to anyone?

  14. At the end of the day, I’m a Celtic supporter, and I personally couldn’t care less whether PL spends £20m on a couple of strikers, (neccessary apparently), midfielders, a new museum, or even if he blows the lot on Smarties!

As regards bringing in new faces, we’ve done that with Balde and Virgil, let’s see what our up and coming youngsters can do, and start giving them more game time.

The players we have should be winning the treble for the next 4-5 years, “The Generation of Domination” as Paul described it a while back.

CL qualification will always be a challenge due to the obstacles put in our way by UEFA, and should be considered a bonus. We over-achieved last season in the CL, and that, unfortunately, has raised our expectations for this year.

One game at a time, and give the young boys a chance!

I honestly can’t see us selling big Fraser Forster – at least I hope not. To sell our best midfielder, top goal-scorer and brilliant goalkeeper all at the same time would be madness in my opinion. I don’t think the majority of the fans would accept the big man being sold.

Off to the game today with my wife and kids, hopefully a decent crowd will be there as it is part of the season ticket, looks a reasonably nice day too, might get to wear the short sleeved Hoops 2 games in a row !

  19. Loving all the fantasy on here from fk who think players and agents are queuing up to come to Celtic when there are 4 weeks of a window left which could deliver EPL jackpot.

It’s not even as if buy now is an option. Any good Player with ambition will be focused on EPL or maybe Top spanish or italian or french for now… We have no chance until CL certainty or the last week of window.

Peter Lawwell does not create that market dynamic.

Airdrie v Hamilton is an interesting local Lanarkshire derby. Seems that Airdrie United have change their name to Airdrieonians – are they trying to pretend that the new club is in fact the same as the one liquidated years ago??

I am not to concerned if we dont manage to bring in a new striker before the CL qualifying 2nd round. I believe we have a decent squad of players and Ledley,Matthews and Mulgrew are all fit again.I think Lennie will motivate the bhoys and with a wee bit of good fortune that you need in all cup matches we should in my opinion make the next qualifying round. I would rather we didnt panic and bring in Doyle or Sharpe I would rather we took a little longer and bring in a young proven goal scorer.H.H.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Spot on ………… In Neil we trust and, despite some of the views on CQN at the moment, our strategy has already borne fruit, and will continue to do so….. the ONLY reservation I have is how the GB situation is being handled (by the media also) ….. If it is proven that GB members let off flares, then there is no defence for that very dangerous practise…..if it is proven that they didn’t, then Celtic need to weed out those responsible and ensure the stadium security is at a level which prevents it happening …… the GB must not be vilified for enhancing the atmosphere at Parkhead, but must also ensure they don’t contravene the Footbal Safety etc rules….. Celtic and the GB must work together to ensure their fantastic contribution is retained, and to ensure where ‘the line is drawn’ ……. Looking forward to the game (and the GB) today……

Up early to get amini AB AND a mum in law onto the BUS to Donegal.. They re Hardcore. The bus to Donegal,in the days of smoking on board, it was a test of endurance. In hindsight, for non smokers, it should ve been a journey with an oxygen mask.

Nowadays, sure a wee flight to Carrickfin is the business, but the training for Donegal is done on the bus.

220 miles as the craw flies. It takes 12 hrs on the bus!

You can be sure the Snyde phone in will start with another hatchet job on us. As part of their commitment to the Hun corpse revival, they’ll kick off with Bangergate. Keevins will shoot down the first Celtic fan with his ‘ones as bad as the other’ cop out.

Last night I was sent a twitter link from a site called ‘futbol regular people’, who listed ’10 must visit stadiums before you die’.

    1 Bernabeu

    2 Celtic Park

    3 Anfield

    4 Nou Camp

    5 La Bombonera

    7 Wembley

    8 Signal Iduna

    9 Maracana

    10 Aztec

So I then googled stuff and came up with another site…Business Insider..’Europe’s worst fans’..

1 Lazio (with photo of Olympic Stadium)

2 Guess who? (With photo of Louden bar..gen up)

    3 Galatasaray

    4 Red Star

    5 Millwall

Sorry no link thingy. A bit subjective I know but further underlines what we’re up against in this country.

Btw we’re also at No.2 in The Bleacher Report..’Worlds best football fans’.

Considering the shame Sevco have brought to the country, you’d think any poll showing praise and high regard for another Scottish club would be jumped on by Msm and Governing Bodies, to in some way alleviate for the establishment club’s international disgrace. Sadly, they prefer to try and drag the honoured club, great worldwide reputation and all, into the same gutter.

I hope I live long enough to see Celtic FC out of this place.

Just a personal view, but I reckon the team in the first 45 today will be the one that starts Wednesday.

Also concerned about losing two of our best players during CL qualification, whilst market forces may have dictated the timing, it isn’t particularly good for morale either on or off the pitch.

We have pretty much known since last summer that Hooper was leaving, and we should have had this sorted months ago.

Our transfer record in recent years has been generally good, with a IMHO 70/80% success rate, except for strikers, where it is the opposite.

This time we need to get it right.
