Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

I haven’t looked at the rules for a while, but the resolution is valid as far as I can see, and provided you have the support of 100 shareholders with their addresses noted matching the share register, it ought to be permitted. (If folk have moved and they haven’t informed Computershare they will not be valid unless they use their notified address).

The issue for the board is, while they might very well support the idea privately, they will be uncomfortable exposing the club to what will inevitably be viewed as boat rocking, troublemaking and the likes by the usual suspects. It’s a default story after all.

Good job though. Well done. Be interested to see how it plays out.

Chelsea battle to keep Bertrand Traoré after teenager excels in Asia – Premier League – Football – The Independent

There is anxiety at Chelsea that they could lose the exceptional 17-year-old midfielder Bertrand Traoré over the next six weeks before they are able to hand the teenager a professional  contract on his 18th birthday in September.

The Burkina Faso international scored his second goal of the club’s Asia tour on Thursday night in Jakarta, a spectacular left-foot shot from the inside right channel. Yet afterwards, club officials tried to stop Chelsea players even discussing Traoré, claiming he was a “triallist” and attempting to divert attention away from the youngster.

Under Fifa regulations, Chelsea  cannot give the player a professional contract until he is 18 on 6 September, in accordance with the rule that prohibits international transfers for  non-European Union players until that age. Yet it would appear that Traoré “the triallist” has been at Chelsea for some time, at least as early as September 2011. He is in the United Kingdom on a student visa.

The concern for Chelsea is that the teenager, who has had an association with Auxerre in the past, is effectively a free agent. Chelsea are in the process of applying for a Home Office work permit for him, although they are not convinced they will succeed. If that is the case they would not yet be able to offer him first-team football and he could theoretically be persuaded to sign for another European club when he turns 18 on the basis they could fast-track him into the first team.

Traoré was first scouted by Premier League clubs when playing as a  14-year-old for Burkina Faso at the Under-17 World Cup finals in Nigeria in 2009. In an interview he gave to the BBC in January 2011 he mentioned an interest from Chelsea. He said then: “I like Chelsea because we have Africans there – [Didier] Drogba, [Michael] Essien, [John] Obi [Mikel].”

Traoré has a brother, Alain, 25, who plays for Lorient having previously been at Auxerre. Both brothers were in the squad for Burkina Faso at last year’s African Cup of Nations. Jose Mourinho has talked openly about how highly he rates Traoré and selected him from a large pool of academy and Under-21s players to make up the numbers of his Asia tour squad.

The Chelsea and England defender Gary Cahill said that Traoré had taken his chance well.  He said: “I don’t know the ins and outs of the situation, but he’s certainly done himself no harm in the two weeks we’ve been here. It’s too early to say he’s ready to do this and that, and we don’t want to get  carried away, but he’s certainly not looked out of place in training alongside some top international players. He’s a young lad but I’m sure he’s got a bright future at Chelsea.”

The young players in the squad, Nathaniel Chalobah, Josh McEachran and Lucas Piazon, will all now go on loan while Islam Feruz returns to play for the Under-21s. Tomorrow, Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, David Luiz, Oscar, Cesar Azpilicueta and John Obi Mikel join up with Mourinho’s squad, who fly to the United States on Tuesday.

Read daily and post occasionally. I just can’t help but join the debate and add my tuppence worth.

I really struggle to understand why some posters are so quick to attack the board in general, PL in particular and the club’s strategy. Why the immediate call to arms and complete lack of trust in the very people who have put us into this very strong position, ie young team, 2 out of 3 domestic trophies won and last 16 CL – all achieved with frankly a very poor hand of playing in a European backwater with paltry TV income compared with every other mainstream league.

Some of us really do need to wake up and smell the coffee.

IMHO, The Club is in the best position it has been for years and years – perhaps ever. And yes, in saying that, i do give considerable weight to our financial well being as that is absolutely fundamental to the future stability of the Club. When VW and GH were signed, there were no fanfares or “guarantees”. However, as a point of interest, neither Andy Carroll or Suirez have not “guaranteed” Liverpool top 4 in England so I don’t see who we expect to bring in to “guarantee” qualification. I absolutely agree with the Board’s apparent stance that we should sell before buying – even if the fact is that we have actually signed 3 players (at a cost of £5M) before selling either VW or GH, a point some have conveniently forgotten. The club seems to adopt the very same principle as most of us apply in wanting ti ensure our house is sold before committing to a new one. Common sense. Yes we could well have afforded to take that financial risk, but the fact we have money doesn’t mean we should throw commeon sense out with the bath water – that policy will soon eat up the money we have. Our custodians can’t live “for the moment” or from season to season – FFS that’s what Murray did! A £3-4M striker will not guarantee qualification for the CL group stages in any case. Yes I would love to have a striker (and an exciting one too) in before Wed but that may not be possible. But I don’t for one second believe that the Club are not trying their damnest to do that. Some of us seem to forget the bleeding obvious (as Burnley78- I think – said) PL does NOT set the economic landscape within which he has to operate. And while Celtic may want a player to come (and offer good money to do so) some players may just not fancy Inverness or Ross County on a Wed night in February eg Lassad or Miku take the gamble with their career by committing to Celtic until CL is certain.

As for the jibe about PL simply wanting to top up his bonus, if that was true, he’d be at Arsenal now.

I think our Board and PL do a fantastic job and we are lucky to have them. History often repeats itself – Wee Fergus wasn’t appreciated until he left and sadly I expect it will be the same for PL and DD

    …………………………………………….

Doesn’t surprise me one bit. They have been given the green light by Bankier.

In a love affair with Celtic lasting over 50 years only two things have driven me to get off my backside and act.

The first time was when our beloved club’s very existence was hanging by a thread and fans were asked to invest. I acted.

The second time was when I saw awful and truly fascist behaviour by Glasgow Police’s FoCUS stormtroopers violently “kettling” young Celtic fans who were trying to have a peaceful protest. I could not let this go unchallenged and travelled to the demo a few weeks later to register my protest and march back to the game with thousands of all ages and types who felt the same.

I didn’t see a word in the press about our Chairman’s concern for the fans he represents in the shocking “kittling” incident or any of the other, many, excesses by a politically motivated police force.

    What moves Bankier.

The only time I have seen him show emotion was when a couple of misguided fans had displayed a tasteless and unwise banner. Fans who didn’t even have the wit to employ humour and display “FCUK UEFA”!

The spiteful and spontaneous condemnation of an entire section of fans by Bankier tells me everything I need to know about him.

Today we will honour a true Celtic man in John Keane. If Bankier were one tenth as good as the big Mayo man he would do me. You wouldn’t get big John drawn into slagging off our fans without knowing all the facts.
