Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

don’t know if Alexander Lopez, Honduran attack minded midfielder, is still available, he fits our profile young, only 21yrs old, and great record for goals/assists, he had a bad injury, 2011/12 but is now back and playing as well if not better than ever. Worth a punt, would make a few bob if all went well could be another diamond once polished?

    Stairheedrammy:

To begin, I don’t think me and Ernie are having anything close to an argument. Ernie made an observation on the genre of my posts, he wasn’t having a dig at me or my posts, merely voicing an opinion. I did not take it any other way, hence I referred him back to a post I made in your early hours.

Without reading back I don’t remember bringing the Scottish media into my post with regards the sensitive topic of abuse and paedophilia.

The Catholic Church, in the past, has made mistakes in their priorities regards criminality and I do not shy away from that criticism, however, Scotland aside (for the moment), look around the world are see how freely available statistical information is on who the most common abusers of children are and it is most definitely not those from the Catholic Clergy; not even close.

I could post links on here, but I would be accused by some of whataboutery, however, if you’re prepared to take the WHO (World Health Organization), Time Magazine, Newsweek Magazine, New York Times, as reasonably impartial reporters they might prove to be a good starting point.

Also, churches insure themselves against public liability, you might want to research how the Catholic Churches premiums stack up against other religions and organisations.

Further, you might want to have a wee look into The Catholic Church’s record of aggressive and proactive protective measures.

And last but not least for the moment:

A 2004 U.S. Department of Education report reported that “the most accurate data available” reveals that “nearly 9.6 percent of [public school] students are targets of educator sexual misconduct sometime during their school career.”

This result prompted Hofstra University’s Dr. Charol Shakeshaft, the author of the study, to opine in 2006, “[T]hink the Catholic Church has a problem? The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.”

A Meanwhile, that same 2004 report cited an important study from the mid-1990s:

“In an early [1994] study of 225 cases of educator sexual abuse in New York, all of the accused had admitted to sexual abuse of a student but none of the abusers was reported to authorities.”

That is an important and alarming fact:

    Number of abusive educators: 225

Number reported by school officials to police: 0

So, in other words, as recently as just 1994, it was the universal practice in New York among school administrators not to call police to report abusers.

And once you’ve done that you’ll start to appereciate you haven’t even begun to scratch the surface.

A good starting point is the book; Pedophiles and Priests: Anatomy of a Contemporary Crisis by Phillip Jenkins. Don’t take everything he says as gospel but don’t discard any of it either.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do think celtic have spent significantly more money over the summer on the stadium, will spend more than is normally the case in the summer on players, will pay down debt and will complete the 1st phase of the celtic triangle, if all that is done i’s take a guess that we will have spent at the very least 20 million overall.

Stphbhoy – right as per last night I’m not having any of this guff. Celtic have taken in 48m in the last 6 months extra from normal income. How do your sums in terms of stadium cost etc equal that?

    ———-

We can’t assume that CL income will come in every season. Celtic have to sit down and figure out what needs investment in terms of players and infrastructure. After that we have to look at what happens if we don’t make CL this season or next ? What cash reserves have we got to meet this possibility ? In a nutshell, the 40 odd million will be invested into the medium term running of the club. I think that’s prudent.

  9. Neganon,

Say I work in ASDA stacking shelves. I have worked there for a few years and have always been one of the best shelf stackers in the country.

I have been so good at stacking shelves that Sainsburys want me to go to them. Now not only are sainsburys closer to where I was brought up they are also offering me MUCH more than I am currently getting. They are also going to give ASDA a nice payment to get my superb shelf stacking experience.

ASDA have a shop of the year competition coming up that sainsburys are not entered in and they obviously want their best people in that day.

Do they keep me knowing that I may not try my hardest, may injure my shelf stacking hands in the competition – or before – and sainsburys may pull out, or sainsburys could even pull ou

When your whole life is governed by your religion, these revelations are like ‘a (fatal in my case) shot to the heart’ ……. our leaders have let us all down by concealing those who would abuse innocents, and they have also destroyed the Faith of many…….. We all know there are animals who will enter establishments to gain access to vulnerable innocents…… but to conceal them when discovered….????????…… I had better say no more

Not for one minute would I seek to attempt to justify the unjustifiable.

My consolation has always been the certain knowledge that so many of my fellow Catholics across a wide range of social situations live their lives according to the PRINCIPLES of Catholicism.

One of the first things we learned about our Faith is that we are all sinners.

That ,of course ,includes members of the clergy.

The Institution of the Catholic Church has,in many cases behaved abominably.

Most of the Catholic punters I have ,and have had, the privilege of knowing were principled people with an unshakeable decency. These are the Catholic Church.Like yourself they will have had their Faith shaken.

For me ,these are the people I cling to.They will never let me down, nor will I them.

    They are the Catholic Church.

On a mundane basis, back to the media glee at our pain and discomfiture.

What percentage of Catholic priests eg. in Scotland,or any other place you care to mention, have been involved in the heinous activities you refer to?

Sincerely hope you find the comfort the Catholic Church has always afforded me and mine.

  18. Majestic -I don’t get your point – I have no issues with players moving on for more money. I do have an issue with celtic not being prepared for it and for crap unambitious parsimony. I have an even bigger issue with crap attempts to justify it because it lets the board off the hook.

Stephbhoy what debt is that? Celtic have no debt except sensible long term structured debt. What a load of nonsense. Celtic are incredibly cash rich at the moment and we have sold our two best players ahead of the most important game of the season with no attempt to replace them. Explain that please?

  19. An dun ah jam tomorrow – the old favourite. Celtic have over 40 million extra but wait and wait and wait. Also celtic can influence their chances of getting into the cl again by being a wee bit ambitious rather than the current close your eyes and cross your fingers strategy.

  20. A STOR MO CHROI

Along side the heroic lives in terms of peaks of heroism in individuals you have posted there is the everyday living of Christ’s message on our doorsteps.

The Mungo Foundation are an example of such everday living, providing care services to the more disadvantaged in our society.

A couple of years back they were having problems with keeping their IT systems in their offices running. A case for replacement equipment was rejected on cost grounds and I took up a request to help by agreeing to visit those services in my spare time (I was only working 2 days a week) and do a diagnoses of their PC stock to identify those past their sell by and those that with added memory had a longer life.

Before agreeing I had a look at their web page and saw 10 Services. After agreeing I had another look to find about 4 service centres under the 10! Never mind it was going to take 4 weeks instead of one.

Those 4 weeks are one of the more uplifting experiences in my life visiting some of the centres caring for the elderly, single mums, mentally handicapped, substance users etc.

The care and attention provide was Christ in action and he was working in this case under the banner of the Catholic Church using the only tools at his disposal – human beings. Normal folk and possibly some not so normal, but over the piece considerably more good than harm was being done on a daily basis.

And that is how it is. The every day miracles go unnoticed to a large extent and organisations always have to be aware of the human condition.

It is in not recognising the reality of the human condition that the Church has left itsef open to harm, through the more than human discipline they require of their priests, one of the reasons I never wanted to be one, I liked the lassies too much.

Depending on what sort of weekend he has, we might have a new forward in, or a couple of photographs of him emerging from a downtown hotel clutching a bottle of penicillin.

Like others on this forum I think you have to accept all religions are fallible as they are organised by mere men.If we take for a minute the Church of Scotland and the Gay ministers situation it says in the bible homosexuality is wrong now if you are born homosexual that is how it is you dont choose it but my understanding is it is not homosexuality that is wrong it is practicing it but the Church of Scotland say they follow the bible. Now the Church of England have problems with female Bishops. Now having visited the Vatican and seen the riches the Roman Catholic Church have and then looking at the poverty in the World it is my opinion if Jesus returned to the World he would be disgusted by the way organised religion operates I can also see the shame in the priests who have interfered with children and have been protected by the Church .As I have grown older I have become more and more aware of mans sins including my own I do believe there is a God but I do believe we men let him down very badly indeed.H.H.

A Stor- thats a well researched perspective on how the recognition of sources of abuse is considered internationally- especially in the US. Unfortunately thats not a perspective apparently shared by the Scottish media, for whom abuse related to the Catholic church seems a more acceptable story to pursue than any emanating elsewhere. There should be equal focus no matter the source of the abuse. Over the years there have been 3-4 convictions of house parents at Quarriers for historic abuse, reported in my local paper- as its a local interest. Small papers, limited time and page space allocated. Imagine if that had been a Catholic run home
