Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

  2. celtic striker conjecture:

    * The more you hear a player (P) mentioned as a potential Celtic signing target (P’)

    * The less likely that player (P) is a true Celtic signing target (P^).

After the true Celtic signing target (P^) is heard of for the first time he is in Glasgow a median of 1 day later and signed within 72hrs (C) .

  4. I agree Malarkey in recent times Lenny has been clever, he drops hints about certain players but the guys we do actually sign appear to come out of nowhere. Its a good policy as it stops other Clubs from gazumping us. The guys at the top are no doubt doing a decent job but with about 8 gone from last years squad and only 3 buys, must admit I’m anxiously awaiting news of reinforcements.

Funny how Celtic never acted when they needed the GB to inspire the whole club in a tepid season.

Who will ever forget the Tifo against Barca which the club did not even donate a bin bag to when asked for by those who spent days of their own time setting it up.

Corporate Celtic becoming a horrible plastic sham of the club I love.

    _______________________________________________________

I know that you and I don’t talk but – hey ho :)

    100% agreement M8 – Well said.

If you don’t mind i’d like to add – at the expense of being booted up n doon the blog – it’ll no be the 1st time :)

Yeah, if you want to be forensic – I’d say that Celtic FC has been a ‘plastic’ version of the one that I new and grew up with, lived and breathed every minute of every of my life until – Fergus took control !!!

Since Fergus took control…only the brief interludes of the – Wim year / MON years / Neil’s 1st year – have I felt that Cellic thing that drives you on every day in this part of the world to face our eternal foes in whatever set-up – the workplace / social venues etc…

The plasticness that you mention is all too real I’m afraid. Since FM took control – the ‘rebels’ one by one disappeared. Therefore, the Celticness disappeared with them. imo

Not one Cellic fan on the executive level – they’ll tell you that their Celti die-hards but – their not. The joost want yer money.

Once the acceptable level of SB’s have been sold or, yer ‘star’ players – the bored / executives will put the tools away. imo

The only thing that drives them is YOUR money – but where does it go ?

Like Fergus did with TB(RIP) – bring in sumdy who dizny know his way aroon the block ie: Bullying material…that has been the way of it at CP since MON left. imo

What we have been treated to – in terms of dug-out recruitment is – PL puppet-show.

MON had b#lls and was never going to be a door-mat. Nobodies Mug.

WGS was a CEO’s dream manager. Saya it all really. imo

BTM finished 20th out of 20 managers in the EPL and was deemed good enough to manage Celtic FC as a result. Hmmm

NFL’s 1st season was brilliant despite all of the stuff that went on off the pitch. This seemed to cloud what was going on on the pitch.

Fast forward to today and GH has been moved on and that’s a blow especially as we all know that another project will be the best bet for a replacement, or the bored might surprise us and show that they are on the same page as the fans ?

But, I was taken aback by Neil’s recent comment that – Southampton were the type of club that Vic67 should join ? I mean a club who were recently in administration ?

Our best player who – imo – was our best MF and CH – being forced oot the door for a significant profit but, that’s only a good thing if it is used to maintain the quality of the squad not to asset-strip as appears to be the policy. imo

Anyway prediction for this season – Celtic to win the domestic Treble with Celts cuffing Sevco in one of the cup competitions – to reach the CL group stage and finish 3rd – then go into the EL and reach the semi-final stage.

Hail Hail n Happy Days – Off oot – laters….

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but Celtic FC could go some way to easing the problems in 111 by taking stewarding operations back in-house and seek applications for stewarding from Celtic Supporters (although this does not have to be exclusive)

We have a security team – they could appoint a layer of experienced security people to manage the stewarding to work in tandem with each other. Club crests on the high viz gear, working as partners with fans not as bully boys.

That to me is the starting point. The rest will follow more easily. As I understand it at present heavy handed stewarding by non-celtic people is a large part of the problem. Attmepts by the current stewards to deal with problems will be perceived, rightly or wrongly, as a provocation on the GB and section 111 in general.

The most sensible post I have read on here today.

    Well said.

    HH!!

    =============================================

Not often I’m accused of that!

I’ve been saying this for a while. I see no benefit to keep it outsourced. It will not be saving a huge amount of money to outsource it. In fact with some imagination it could save money.

People should be paid for their time but it is an area which could become another way of engaging the supporters. Hell, we could even have a few GB members stewarding or, if you like, genuine self policing.

Steward a certain number of games get a ticket for a CL game for free or some such thing. I believe other clubs do it.

I got extremely peeved on entering the ground one day with my son – a steward, who to be frank was looking for trouble saw my son (who was maybe 9 at the time) struggling to get the ticket to open the turnstyle. He got through with some intervention from me (i put the ticket in the reader for him) and then got in myself. No sooner was I through than the guy, who I had clocked watching us was straight over with a surly ‘let me see your tickets’ – he looked like he’d won a watch and was hoping to throw us out for dodgy tickets or something. I asked him if there was any need to have done that? He could have come over and helped my son in rather than stand there and watch us struggle with a big queue building behind us.

Only a small example but if that had been a Celtic supporter watching the gate I just know he’d have come over to help rather than look for trouble as he did with a father and young son at a football match.

To me it’s a no brainer and I think I’ll write to Mr Lawwell or maybe our new liaison officer to suggest it.

It’s the model for Celtic now. Unfortunate we can’t keep them a bit longer but in leaving for a decent fee these guys are ensuring the future for the club in some way.

We need to get used to it. Some will stay – the Sammi’s, the broonies, the forresties…..

Others will come and go because that is how they were sold on Celtic in the first place. Hooper, Ki, Wanyama – they’ll all be referenced by Celtics negotiators with the young talent we are hoping to bring in and move on in the next few years.

We have moved with the times. I am comfortable with it.

  24. Unless John Park & Neil Lennon have another unknown gem up their sleeve to surprise us with, I would rather we showed some faith in Tony Watt & young Bahuridin Atajic as Hooper’s replacement. Otherwise what is the point of our youth development? I’ve seen more quality from Tony Watt than Balde for instance.

Agreed we are in a certain situation where we have a 60,000 seater stadium to finance in a league dwarfed by us .

The ragers chose one road to go down and they ended up DEED ,DEFUNCT ,EXTINCT ,except to the most delusional and establishment soup takers .

I am so glad our club chose a different and more sensible path and it astonishes me to hear people still questioning that route .

CP and Lennoxtown cost money and plenty of it to run ,the players we put on the park cost many millions per year and our revenue streams are harder than ever to exploit .

Where exactly do people think the money is going to come from .

MON was what we needed when he came and didn’t he deliver but this strategy was never sustainable and the board knew it .

Tough decisions had to be made and they were the board knew we could not keep pace with a out of control transfer market and decided to invest in the scouting side and I challenge anyone to fault this decision ,yes there were poor deals done but on the whole the scouting team have done a very good job .

By the way Fergus spent more (net ) on putting a team on the park in the years he was at CP than the so called big spending Murray and this when having to build the biggest stadium in Britain .

Also a mention for wee GS for the job he did winning titles during the transition to the scouting policy
