Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

The Club issued a public threat to close a section of the ground. That’s way ott in terms of a few flares and bangers. If you think the Club handled this well, take a read at how it was reported in the media. A complete PR disaster.

He simply said Jarrow has become very frustrating. Has ability, but has lost it’s way. The stable feel he is showing up something like his old self tonight and if he does, it’s not a great race. He did add though that he’s backing it only moderately, since allowing at home and turning it in on the track are two different things. I stuck a tenner

On at 8/1 purely for interest but won’t be counting any chickens.

The club needed to make the threat of closing that section in order to let UEFA know they are in charge of putting our own house in order.

This is common sense and I hope the lads that let of the fireworks now know how serious the matter is,

I have mentioned the GB before in not to flattering terms with regard to behaviour. Their statement that they had nothing to do with the incidents and take a dim view of this is good enough for me and I would like to apologise as one tim to another tims or tims.

I look forward to the day when the flares, smoke bombs etc are gone and the colour and noise and atmosphere are the only thing that people will mention with regards to the GB.

Apparently we go mad because we didn’t force players to stay and play for us. We flip the lid completely over a couple of bangers going off, we demand to follow the financial model of deadclub and we generally eat the face of fans who disagree with us.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but Celtic FC could go some way to easing the problems in 111 by taking stewarding operations back in-house and seek applications for stewarding from Celtic Supporters (although this does not have to be exclusive)

We have a security team – they could appoint a layer of experienced security people to manage the stewarding to work in tandem with each other. Club crests on the high viz gear, working as partners with fans not as bully boys.

That to me is the starting point. The rest will follow more easily. As I understand it at present heavy handed stewarding by non-celtic people is a large part of the problem. Attmepts by the current stewards to deal with problems will be perceived, rightly or wrongly, as a provocation on the GB and section 111 in general.

    The statement says

“Following the events of last Tuesday’s match, the Club’s position was to close Section 111, but following discussions between the Club’s Supporters’ Liaison Officer and representatives of the ‘Green Brigade’ that decision has been reviewed and the section will remain open. However, the situation will be monitored at both the Celtic FC v Borussia Monchengladbach match on Saturday 27th July, and the Celtic FC v IF Elfsborg match on Wednesday, July 31.”

Here’s how I read that (just to be clear). The club heard from UEFA and internally concluded that they would have to close the section. They then met with the Green Brigade, and whether they stated that closure might be necessary in the form of a threat or as their only option, it never happened following the discussions. A positive result.

I’m not sure what some people expect the club to do when faced with fan behaviour that’s likely to bring increasing censure from UEFA, if it continues without the club being seen to take some form of action to prevent it.

That’s fair enough. I disagree on the need to make public a threat to close a section of the ground. That was always going to make for unfair and grossly exaggerated reports on the problems, fairly minor problems in my view, we face as a support.

A report will be sent to UEFA if we’re charged. In that report the Club could have said, we’ve met with various fan groups and season ticket holders in that section, we have conveyed in the strongest possible terms that this situation can’t happen again. We’ve implemented various stewarding options (as suggested earlier) to help us in dealing with this problem.

In my view, that approach was warranted given the nature and scale of the problem. Not headline grabbing stand closing statements.

I’m pleased that the CF story is now in the UK mainstream.

When Roy Greenslade writes about a media issue it IS mainstream.

The Scottish media can now start to write around the subject-I certainly will.

  27. Off subject but have to vent.

    “Historic sex abuse cases.”

The BBC commonly use the phrase to describe the crimes of Stuart Hall, Jimmy Saville and others.

It is has increasingly been used to describe the offences of abuse to young women and girls in the 70s and 80s. Can we describe these decades as that far in the past as to be “historic”?

Why use the term then? Is it to ease our minds and place it so far in the past as to be of no concern to us today?

I doubt the the victims of this abuse would view it that way. Many of whom have had to live with the memories and have been fearful of having to present their evidence in court.

Would the BBC have a particular desire to place these crimes in the swirling clouds of antiquity? After all both Hall and Saville were eminent stars and some of the crimes were committed while in the employment of the BBC. Are the BBC trying to put some “historical” distance between them and these offences.

I doubt the victims see this in any BBC historical perspective. To these women this is today’s news not “All our Yesterday’s”
