Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

I really dont know where this “Urban myth”that decent players will not come to Scotland and play for Celtic, comes from.It is gibberish, perpetrated by fans who will make any excuse for our clubs lack of bottle in the market.Go through the team,Forster,Mathews,Lustig,Ledley,Izzy,Sammi,Wilson,Van Diyk,.Past duffers include,Sutton,Hartson,Petrov,Di Canio,Cadete,Van Hoidonk.I could go on but I hope you get the picture.

All over Europe,Spain included there are players not getting anywhere near the wages Celtic are paying, and a chance of CL,plus honours. We are also a great stepping stone to the riches of the EPL,as has been proved recently.Any player who signs is stunned by the set up,far better than most clubs in Europe.Maybe you are telling me that the King of Kings did not really like playing for Celtic and banging in goals galore as it was only the SPL.You could see the lack of interest in his face.

There are strikers out there who would jump at the chance to play for us,its just that we wont pay the going rate for them.We demand over £5 million for a striker with 1 year left on his contract, but will not contemplate paying £4 million for a proven striker who we will have for at least 3 years and is more than likely to make us a profit at the end.

  8. derbyshirebhoy on

Sad to see Victor and now Gary go but every cloud has a silver lining as I’ll take just a bit more notice of both Southampton and Norwich this season to add to Swansea with Ki and of course I’ll see close up just how well Johnny Russell performs. That reminds me that Shaun will be in the same division unless Roberto moves for him. Ah well have to look for my comfort somewhere until the Greek God ensures our European progress.

I just can’t fathom out why we have rushed two of our best players out …before the most important games of the season

Think no fan wants to lose their best players but, as you say, it’s all about survival these days, and we are maintaining a very strong financial strategy, with every effort being made to continue to bring in nuggets…….unfortunately, the negatonians / anti-Board brigade concentrate on knocking Celtic instead of discussing the new players and positive subjects surrounding our Club …… We are doing very well, and everyone at Celtic is working in the best interests ofthe Club…….we will have bad seasons and good seasons…….the problem is the negatonians love it when we have a bad result / season etc…it’s in their nature …..they don’t know what constructive criticism means …… Thank God the vast majority of Celtic fans are really enjoying the success of our Great Club….AND JUST LOVE BEING CELTIC SUPPORTERS…..

We can wear jeans and shirts in the main lounge – an old bugger gave me a snotty look on Sunday – but my (mixed) crowd laughed at this.

Had the Church put the victims rather than the Institution first, the BBC would not have a leg to stand on.

Even yet the Church is dragging its feet over the enquiry into the O’Brien affair, especially the timing of the complaints made against him.

Johnny Russell would have walked into the team today. Sammy not a striker, Stokes injury prone and inconsistant, Amido is new and Watt and Neil seem to have fallen out. So JR for me was a no brainer. We knew GH was off.

  17. With both Victor and Gary now away from the club and about to start their careers in the English league, I was thinking about what Willie Wallace was saying about the two players. Contrary to most opinions he reckoned VW will struggle in England where as he believes that Hooper will thrive. Will be interesting to see how they got on but it is good for the Neil Lennon era at Celtic to develop these players and move them to the league that ambitious young players want to play in.

Willie, when he spoke at the Greenock Celtic Supporters Club, talked about a few young Australian players. The boy Willie wanted Celtic to take ended up going to Bayern Munich and he was also full of praise for another young 18 year old boy, who as a consequence of Willie chapping certain doors while in at Celtic Park, arrives in Glasgow tomorrow lunchtime to have a trial for Celtic and he’s under the CQN wing while in Glasgow. Willie says he’s the best 18 year old in Australia. He’s coming to Celtic but he apparently supports Arsenal and no doubt he will have ambitions to play in the EPL – just like VW and GH.

Got him a ticket for the big game midweek so he’ll see what Celtic is all about straight away. Will be interesting to follow his progress and to see if he impresses the club etc.

  18. Pfayr

Aye it’s a gamble alright and the club knew Vic was going for big money and that Hoops wanted to return to his homeland, they knew this before the transfer season opened, I did!

  19. What agent or decent player in their right mind would opt for Celtic right now when their EPL gravy train might come in if they hd out for another 4 weeks ??? Anyone who thinks different is smoking something for sure.

  20. BSR

Why tho ….we don’t need the money

IMO …we might spend if we qualify for the CL …

I’d hate to think how we’d get on with the current squad in the CL proper …unless a couple of youngsters come good …..

We must be four or five players down from last season

  21. It’s sad to hear of the death of young Ton from The Thai Tims.

who says “we don`t need the money” ?

We may say it but the board are carrying other targets in their mind. Zero debt , not just for next season but the next 5 seasons.

The cash injection last season will sustain a Europa League campaign for this season, providing we keep the outgoings down. That is the more realistic option, will not be pleased about it, but remember selling your best players , McGeady and Boruc in particular led to a flat season thereafter. More of the same I fear…

  26. Vmham,

Thanks. Actually I am not a monarchist. Nobody is born superior to another. Quite why it aroused so much vitriol I don’t know. At the risk of sounding pompous, my point about the rich was more about their spiritual health. The same applies to the poor and their spiritual health. Some of the class warriors resort to instinct opinions though. The parasite argument is one which seems legitimate until one considers how much industry they appear to bring to the country. Anyway…

We run at a sevco *times three loss* – if we don’t have CL money.

Gary Hooper was retained in the lead up and amid ticket sales for Juve (a decision I agreed with ) unfortunately it didn’t matter because he didn’t get a sniff ;-) home or away.

Nothing has changed except we’ve sold the family silver, and are intent on sitting on the money, to see if we have can qualify, for group football.

Then the board will sit down again, and if CL money is there, they’ll buy, if not they won’t.
