Sticking it to the man, cautionary Swedish tales

1347

Absolutely delighted for St Johnstone, who recorded one of the finest aggregate results by a Scottish club in European football in the last 30 years.  My brother was speaking to a Saints player this week, who told him the successful strategy and drive came from chairman, Steve Brown, a fact which Hibernian would do well to ponder today.

Malmo’s 0-7 victory at Easter Road yesterday was chastening ahead of our game against fellow Swedes, Elfsborg on Wednesday.  Celtic are in a remarkably strong position now, having produced excellent on and off-field results for the first time in the modern era, but those seven goals last night (not to mention the multitudes we shipped preseason) are a cautionary tale.  It’s also worth remembering that Rangers decline into liquidation was precipitated by Champions League elimination at the hands of Swedish opposition two years ago (“Larsson has scored”).  Wednesday presents a huge challenge.

As soon as I heard the stadium announcement on Tuesday I knew there was trouble in store from Uefa.  The second pyro punishment will lead to a heavier fine.  Celtic’s statement yesterday advised of matters of concern to Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group, who issue stadium safety licence, regarding a whole range of issues (overcrowding, lateral movement, moshing, body surfing).  What to say about 131 broken seats?  Ouch.

The club and Green Brigade (whose members occupy only a part of section 111) have met and we carry on as normal for now.  Question is, can either control everyone in the section?  I hope so but it’s a big ask. All it takes is one off-message person keen to ‘stick it to the man’, and there’s a long season ahead.  Place your bets, folks.

Our thoughts are with Paul Lennon and the Thai Tims after the news that one of the boys who sang on the Celtic videos died in a road accident while another is critically ill.

The general consensus seems to be that we need a 25/30 goals per season striker and that the finance is available. Names are being bandied about and their potential is being debated.

We also are agreed that we can’t pay a silly transfer fee or wages. Surely, if such players are being talked about on here, they are also on the radar of clubs who can pay more than us.

I am therefore quite relaxed that I am not hearing we are after this name or that. I trust NFL. He strikes me as very shrewd and I have no doubt we will get our man if one is available, given the constraints under which we must operate. I detect an unfounded sense of panic and mistrust amongst some of us. Relax bhoys and ghirls. HH

Off subject but have to vent.

    “Historic sex abuse cases.”

The BBC commonly use the phrase to describe the crimes of Stuart Hall, Jimmy Saville and others.

It is has increasingly been used to describe the offences of abuse to young women and girls in the 70s and 80s. Can we describe these decades as that far in the past as to be “historic”?

Why use the term then? Is it to ease our minds and place it so far in the past as to be of no concern to us today?

I doubt the the victims of this abuse would view it that way. Many of whom have had to live with the memories and have been fearful of having to present their evidence in court.

Would the BBC have a particular desire to place these crimes in the swirling clouds of antiquity? After all both Hall and Saville were eminent stars and some of the crimes were committed while in the employment of the BBC. Are the BBC trying to put some “historical” distance between them and these offences.

I doubt the victims see this in any BBC historical perspective. To these women this is today’s news not “All our Yesterday’s”

  10. Fergus – I haven’t seen much of him but my own preferred method of judging a player (and I am really no expert) is to simply watch his basic technique – can he control it, can he pass it?

Physically he looks like he needs to build himself up but that can be done easy enough.

I like the look of him. In a small way he reminds me of Paul Lambert in the way he shoots and moves. But as I say I can’t really give a full assessment. I hope you’re right about him.

Is it only me or does anyone else think Tom Rogic looks like a bigger version of Mr.Bean ? I think he needs time on the training ground in order to learn when to make a run and when to hold at the minute he is like a headless chicken he also requires work on his posture as he does not walk or run in a head up fashion but runs with his head down and hunch backed he is a work in progress certainly not the finished article. Been reading all day in work, Lots of infighting on here of late and that is new, I always love this site because there always a interesting yarn about Celtic or a good conspiracy theory or an exclusive. i cant help but feel a bit of the anger shown in the last few days as because of underlying things, Some of us believe that Celtic can do no wrong and others are more realistic and believe that with 40m to spend something should have been done yesterday to bolster the squad I am with the later, i think it is a bit much to expect Neil and us to go into next season without our best player and our top goalscorer but as the world is now, Its all about downsizing and having to make do. I Don’t think Celtic are any different, They are being prudent and you cant fault them for that but something should have been spent on a replacement for Hooper. Anyway i Digest (; ) ) from my point. Too many unhappy fans at the club which is fine but it doesn’t mean we turn on each other, That’s what THEY want, infighting and us tearing apart our own cheerleaders (gb). Faithful through and through, We stick together no matter what and that’s what they hate and fear the most is our resilience. Also the heat aint helping. ;)

  30. glad to see the debate on who will replace Hooper has reached DEFCON2 , after we lose tomorrow in another meaningless match, the alert level will rise again.

The notion that all we have to do is sign someone who always scores goal is disproved by one man, the Greek God himself who rattled in lots of goals in Holland but has failed to win even the canvas gutty in any league since.

Yes we need a goalscorer, why not persevere with Watt and Stokes in the meantime, although I hear that NFL is very keen on the Latvian kid at Hamburg. Perhaps Balde will be the answer in the medium term, at present we just do not know.

I do know that Watt and Stokes are not “CL level” (whatever that is) , but then again is our team at “CL level” ? In my opinion we are a bit short of being competitive if we were to draw French, Portrugese or top end Dutch teams. Just a thought.
