Strong message from Supporters Association

926

Running late today…….

The Celtic Supporters Association are in their seventh decade so have seen it all before, albeit the matters the felt necessary to comment on today are uncommon in modern times.  After their AGM yesterday they issued the following statement:

“We do not condone in any circumstances the letting off of smoke devices of any kind, the dangers to the health of our supporters should at all times be paramount in everybody’s thoughts. We have quite a number of members who are of the senior variety, and the dangers to anyone with respiratory problems are greatly increased by coming into contact with smoke.

We also do not condone the use of pyrotechnics of any kind; again the dangers to our own supporter’s health should be paramount at all times.

Finally, the deliberate damaging of property within any stadium is not acceptable, and leaves a stain on the great reputation of the Celtic Support. The seats that were broken at Fir Park was blatant vandalism; nothing else.”

I share Association president Joe O’Rourke’s hope that this is a watershed moment for the support, but most of us know at least one person who thrives on chaos and notoriety.   We need as many strong voices to step forward as possible, someone with experience of putting genies back in bottles would be handy too.

Many thanks to those who participated in our Cinc Senti’s auction, which closed yesterday, raising £102 for charity.  More on where the money will be going later in the week……..

“Yes those were the days, when you didn’t reach for your laptop, phone or tablet or whatever to see what you had missed in terms of things Celtic. Those days when, unless you were from east Kilbride, you had no idea what the eather was like there— and to be honest, you had absolutely no interest in finding out!….. Back to the days when you had never heard of Kojo and his way of speaking or writing, when no one had ever Brattbakkedinanager, would recognise a cash strapped scrofulous hillbilly outside Beverley Hills, and the only Battered Bunnet you knew of belonged to your Grandad.”

    We agree, I think :-)

Anyways, we have a CL game in one of the world’s great sporting arenas to look forward to on Wednesday. We’re flying domestically and confidence is clearly sky high.

We have nothing to lose, since further progress is impossible, I’d love to see us go there and try to have a real go.

Must confess I was surprised to see JPT confirm that the 128 suspensions are all GB block allocations. Surprised doubly actually. On the one hand surprised that they would blanket the GB allocation collectively when the club (presumably) has the details of each individual who purchased/was allocated a ticket for that section. And on the other hand, surprised that they would actually admit (via JPT) to doing so.

    A curious situation.

Perhaps the section damaged was entirely allocated to the GB? Dunno. We’ll see perhaps.

Disgraceful decision by Celtic.Bowing to hysterical pressure from the likes of Keevins in an orchestrated attempt by Irvine and his lackeys in the MSM to discredit our club.

In the second half there was at least one broken seat and 2 green smoke bombs close to us.

The GB, or even those in their allocated section, couldn’t have been responsible for this.

I’m genuinely saddened by the whole situation.

  25. The Green Brigade are kittens . They are not psychopathic holligans inflicting serious violence on anyone. They dont smash up town centres.

They have been victimised unfairly by the police and then by msm .

They cant be compared with ultra factions of Dutch ,Italian ,Spanish German and even bands of nutters that follow English clubs. So why are we and the club beating ourselves up about them?

These other massive clubs dont get their knickers in a twist about real hooligans.

Look at Ajax -they have much larger and much more dangerous ultra fans. Do they react as Celtic are doing? ManU have the men in black etc etc. Its crazy.

It just shows me that blogs like this are affecting them, hence their need to try and demean it, it will fail at the end of the day, we may be at times not all singing from the same sheet, but if we are backed into a corner, and imo, that is not too far away, they will see what unity is all about.

  27. Since Friday’s marvellous display there has been differing dialogue over the actions of a minority of idiots. Lots of proposals on how to handle this have been offered including self policing which prompted one poster to proclaim that football supporters should not “rat” on their contemporaries, I found this statement to be astonishing and I offer my reasons why.

Someone else stated along the lines of “if you think this is bad you should have seen the 80/90’s. I was abroad at that time so I can’t comment on then, but I was around in the 50/60’s and we were known as the raining champions of Scotland due to the amount of bottles that rained down from the back of the terracing and even the Jungle. According to reports this also happened in the 40’s as well.

Not making any excuses for this act of violence as unless we had Olympic champion javelin throwers in our support this despicable action caused much grief to our fans, usually small kids, down the front. This was one of the reasons my da encouraged me to go tae Boghead or the Millburn to watch fitba if he couldnae take me to see the Bhoys.

However it seemed to be fueled by frustration due to blatant unfair decisions or the fact we were single fish that caused this, that and copious amounts of the mammy mine didnae help much either.

A couple of games where we shamed ourselves come to mind:

    1. A league game at Dens Park on November 4, 1961 where the home side won 2-1 Celtic supporters rampaged through the city after the game, 35 were arrested and 38 treated in hospital. The trouble started during the game when word spread that a Celtic fan who had been arrested had died while in custody, fireworks were let off, banners waved and the bottles started to fly. We were front page headlines for days and at school we were forbidden to wear Celtic scarves even though the school colours were green and gold, we were bad news no matter the reason for the violence. For which there was no excuse

    2. Scottish Cup Semi at ayebroke on March 31, 1962, we were drawn to play St Mirren who were formidable cup opponents at that time. The deid team played a fine Motherwell side known as the “Ancel Babes” including Celtic minded Pat Quinn at Hampden and the pundits that Saturday morning were forecasting a Final between the 2 purist sides in Scottish football at that time us and ‘Well.

He previous Monday night we had went tae Love Street and thrashed the home side 5-0 so the fans were up for it. However with 18 minutes left we were 0-3 down 1 of the goals coming from former Celtic legend Willie Fernie who had left us for the Buddies 4 months earlier and another Celtic minded player wee Tommy Bryceland causing us all sort of problems just as he did in the corresponding fixture in 1959.

Onto the park came the fans, some say it was an effort to evade the bottles raining down others it was an attempt to abandon the game, there was even one supporter arrested for climbing the flag pole in an effort to remove the League flag. At this point the referee removed both sides and Bob Kelly rightly conceded the tie. The game was restarted and although Alec Byrne pulled 1 back it mattered not a jot if he had scored 4 as the actions of our fans not only brought shame to the club but ensured we were out of the cup. Let’s put that one down to an inconsistent performance.

BTW the deid team easily took care of the Buddies in the Final.

    3. Moving on to April 19, 1966 and we are now in Anfield with a 1-0 lead from the first leg of the semis of the ECWC 5 days earlier. The home side were leading 2-0 when in the last minute the Buzz Bomb raced past a defender before slotting the ball home which would have taken us into the Final. However the weak Italian ref disallowed it and admitted later on that the huge crowd had intimidated him. Cue for the bottles to rain down again…..No excuses as we were shamed once again.

I can’t recall other unsavoury incidents however the Celtic management had had enough and Big Jock or it may have been Bob Kelly appealed to the fans through the View to self police themselves, which they did and the violence soon dissipated.

I witnessed this twice, both times at deid team games where we won 2-0 on both occasions.

It looks as if we have to get back to preserving our great clubs good name and it’s not “ratting” if you are pointing out thugs not fueled by Lanny or El D but Buckie and Marching Powder.
