Stuck in a league without competition also has benefits

519

When the Champions League draw was made, I feared we would face Anderlecht at home on the final game after five defeats.  This would not necessarily have been the end of our interest in European football, but it would have damaged the momentum in the club in recent months.

You will remember, ahead of match day five, we discussed that the Anderlecht-Bayern Munich game was probably more important to our season than the PSG-Celtic game.  As it transpired, Bayern’s second half winner made all the difference to the second half of our season.

News last night that Celtic are the only group stage qualifier from the Champions Pot to still be in European competition offer some comfort; outcomes could have been a lot worse.

While European football is the custard in our doughnut, all I hear from is Celtic fans who are grateful it is over for a couple of months.  We have an unbeaten record to further and two games a week until the January break.

It can be pretty horrible, a huge club stuck in a minor league without competition, but it offers us respite, an opportunity to recharge, experiment and return afresh.

  1. Is it not the relentlessness, intensity and competitiveness of our better league that we miss when it comes to going up against better prepared European opponents?

  2. If we had lost 1-0 to Anderlecht in Brussels and beat them 3-0 at Celtic Park to qualify for the EL we would all be doing cartwheels!

  9. Probably a load of gash, but if,IF,we could get 25 million for Moussa in January,we should take it.Odsonne looks as if he could be every bit as good.If not better. And we pocket 17 million to help get the players in we need.

Would also give Odsonne and Griff more game time.

  11. Where is Gamboa? Play him on Sunday. they are quite fast up front. Jozo cannot play in all these games so give him a rest for games at Parkhead. Play Ajer or Schiavchenko. And drop Boyata for a few games. He is mince. Dembele should not have played…rushed back too soon again. Play the 2 up front. Drop Sinclair. Play Kouassi Give brown a rest if possible in at least one of the games

    Pundit # 1 .

I was surprised they lost to Shakhtar away . I was stunned that they lost to Feyenoord last night . The only bright spot is that they beat both of those teams on aggregate .

    Pundit # 2 .

“It’s not surprising / it’s not stunning . It’s typical Napoli — . Fail to take your chances , gift the opposition goals -it’s what they do / it’s the way they are . They missed a sitter when they were 2 -1 down in the Ukraine . They were 1 nil up after 3 minutes last night . They chucked it when they learned that Shakhtar were beating Manchester City . They lost to a 10 man Feyenoord who had lost 5 on the trot .Feyenoord !!!!. Don’t give me that on aggregate crap -it’s a league .3 points for a win / a point for a draw and no points for a loss . Napoli can be great and often are -there is no doubt about that – but there is something seriously wrong with their mentality .Football is not a beauty contest . . I guarantee you they will manage to lose on aggregate in the Europa League to somebody you’ve never heard of “

There’s a line in the song that goes:

    “And watched yourself gavotte”

I have never known what that means and I’ve never bothered to look it up. Even now, I have Google already open in front of me but I’m not going to look up what gavotte means…

  16. Drop Sinclair, are you nuts?

The guy had absolutely no support on Tuesday in the system we played none. I’d be more inclined to drop Armstrong who has done little this season, iMO.

Scott Sinclair is class. How many class players do we have on our bookks exaclty, not running out of fingers are we.

All we need is a wee break, one game per week and then off to the sun in January to rekindle the fire, that’s all.

I was going to write some sarcastic, ironic post, aimed at some of the spoilt dumplings who no matter the heights Celtic are reaching just now wail and greet at a setback.

But hey you can’t change a leopard’s spots.

  18. Paul 67 et al,

Agree with what you are saying. A quick couple of points.

Can you remember some of getting mildly rebuked for commenting on the Bayern game against Anderlect. As it turned out it wad the most crucial result for our progress .

Did the assault against Moussa in the LC final nearly jeopardise our Euro aspirations. Moussa did not look anywhere near match fitness, but we played him because he’s a big game player. And still all the focus is on a poxy penalty decision. Murderwell have a history of thuggery which demeans the Scottish game.

Lastly; you acknowledge that we play in an uncompetitive league. How do we retain our impressive home attendances. I would suggest we focus on making the matchday experience second to none. Outside the box thinking required

If I’m not too presumptuous, I would also like to see a bigger focus about actually getting to and from Paradise.

I hope the film also raises awareness and embarrasses all elected representatives with any power.to help these poor souls.
