Sunshine amid murky football shadows

Before we get down to less important matters, let me know, did you buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

There are so many reasons to be cynical about football people (players, directors and fans alike) in the modern era it is scarcely worth listing them but occasionally a pillar of strength comes along and changes all the rules.

This morning’s headlines that Georgios Samaras has attracted interest from an English slumbering giant is reason enough to highlight the dedication of this model professional.  Georgios arrived at Celtic on loan in January 2008 and was instrumental in the historic league win that year.  When he completed his permanent transfer from Manchester City he took an enormous cut in wages because he wanted to be a Celtic player.

Thanks for the great support for the CQN Annual. You can order online here, time is running out for shipping before Christmas!

His talent and effectiveness has meandered, a bit like those looping runs he would go on with the ball, since then and for a while he was subject to considerable abuse from ‘supporters’.  At one point he had the chance to leave but his message to Celtic was simple, ‘If you want me to stay, I’ll stay and fight for my place.  This is my club’.

The story of the rebirth of Celtic is also the story of the rebirth of Georgios Samaras.  He is the epitome of the modern footballer: strong, skilful and intelligent, he would get into any top squad in Europe.

There is no chance of him going to England, Celtic will not sell him and even if they accepted a bid, the player shows no inclination of wanting to leave.  He is currently prime candidate for Player of the Year and is our most feared player in the Champions League.

You have six days to buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in support of Celtic Charity and Teenage Cancer.  This is what we’re all about, don’t talk to me about football until I hear from you on the subject that really matters.

We cannot rely on Thomas Rogne to remain fit for one whole match ,never mind one whole month.

A real pity for the lad.

When fit he would be a regular starter.

    CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE SFL

On behalf of everyone at the Scottish Football League, I would like to add my sincere congratulations to Rangers on achieving this magnificent milestone in the club’s history.

Rangers have brought great honour and distinction to Scottish Football throughout these 140 years and the club has risen to every challenge it has faced.

There is something rather poignant that after 140 years the club is once again a member of the organisation it helped to found in 1890 and we are honoured and proud to have Rangers in the League.

To everyone involved at the club and to its remarkable and loyal fans, Happy Anniversary.

I wish I’d had that on Saturday-I could have done with a sobering thought or ten then….

  4. Sometimes it seems that guys like Sammi whose father was a professional and presumably had a nice middle class upbringing, are not as money-conscious as those who grow up in abject poverty.

They say the fear of poverty never leaves you if you’ve had that unfortunate start in life and it maybe explains why players like Eto’o go off to chase the cash rather than the glory.

Our privately educated goalkeeper should stay the rest of his career at Celtic based on that theory :-).

  5. Efe Ambrose has had a very good start to his Celtic career.

He has performed admirably in a stop gap position in defence.

When he is given the opportunity to place regularly in midfield,he is going to be a revelation.

Knew loads of miners who got jailed for hee haw. Mass victimisation .Many lost pension rights and redundancy payments , an absolute scandal. I was a Welfare Rights Officer with Strathclyde Region at the time and we did what we could for the strikers families and to be fair most local DHSS officers were pretty good as they were under severe pressure from the Tories to pay nothing. A lot of these guys stuck their neck out to help to their eternal credit.

  8. The abuse of Georgios Samaras was probably the worst I’ve heard in my time as a Tim, and that includes watching Martin Hayes and Tony Cascarino amid the refined appraisals of the Jungle.

It did however expose a bitter herd mentality developing in the stands, more akin to Mordor. Joining in the abuse of a player purely because some baritone balloon couldn’t keep his overfed gob shut about him seemed almost epidemic at one point a few years back. How I longed for someone to just lamp those clowns and throw them pitchside.

But Sammi was the best meter of how much your fellow Tim knew about football; intelligent observer or gum-bumping sheep.

Any basic investigation of Sammi’s ability would have led you to the youtube footage of his time at Herenveen; and even from those sparse minutes you would have seen a marauding talent at his best with the game in front of him and the ball at his feet.

Thankfully, we also have the most mentally-strong manager we’ve ever had in the dugout calling the shots, who saw in Sammi what those of us with a base distaste for booing any player in the Hoops had an inkling and hopes of.

And now we’ve got the best years of a top-quality player; for possibly the first time since the King of Kings left.

Sammi has proven himself to be world-class on his game. Recognised throughout Europe and the world as one of Greece’s major stars, feared by every top class side in the CL, even named by Barca in the build-up to our frst match in the Nou Camp as the one Celtic player they had talked about.

So if you still cannot comprehend the praise now being heaped on this guy, please go look in the mirror; look at yourself, your mindset, asses your own basic approach to football and think about revamping your understanding of the game.

As for Sammi – we salute you; Your indefatigability, your loyalty, and your class.

I knew a few miners over Edinburgh way at the time. Longannett and Bilston Glen. They were crucified, but the community did their bit,and as you say, there were legal and welfare officials willing to stick their necks out for what was right. And fair play to them.

It was a very poisonous time in the country’s history, and the leadership at the top deserve all the brickbats coming-both sides, btw,IMO.

Not my own best day- but hey ho. Hopefully hospital food isn’t as bad as I remember.

Anyway been reading the posts re Sammi. I cannot say that I have always been a fan – I was overseas when he signed and was underwhelmed when I finally saw him.

He is as exasperating player as I’ve seen- players with talent who regularly underperform are more annoying than the truly inept. I’ve no doubt I’ll be close to tearing my hair out before the year is out as he does something daft or appears lazy.

But I really doubt he is producing some of his recent inspired form just to earn a gig with EPL. A player who signs autographs for bewildered young fans after the fiasco of Ross County whilst others gave him pelters seems to me to be fairly committed to us.

He may be irritating but he’s the kind of player grandkids will ask in a few years time ‘ Was that Samaras any good?’

Just to join the Sammi discussion ,I sat close to the tunnel on Boxing Day 2010 when Celtic defeated St.Johnstone with two very late goals by our Korean ex-bhoys.

Celtic struggled badly that day especially the forward line of Sammi and Daryl Murphy although I understood the fans frustrations that day , I could not help but feel for Sammi .

The barrage of booing that he faced that day as he was substituted in the second half would have brought to an end many a players’ time at their club.

Seven days later I witnessed Sammi scoring a match winning brace at ipox, this was met with widespread adulation!

Those seven days for me summed up Sammis’ time @ Celtic Park.

  14. Longmuir’s comment is very transparent but I can’t make my mind up whether he is being deliberately pro-Newco or is too thick to understand what’s happened over the last wee while. Sadly it is bound to be former. Yet again we see back-slapping and sympathy for these downtrodden fans, as it was the boogeyman* who wrecked the Limited Company that the 140 year old ‘club’ was loosely attached to (this seems to be the new MO of the Newco-ers). No mention of the Purchase Ledger that was ripped up to ensure Green could sweep up the assets for hee-haw. Sadly these creditors are the victims. The sooner we start prosecuting white collar criminals in this country the better. I could name a few bankers who should be joining anyone who acted fraudulently during the Rangers debacle in the dock. This will not happen (ref. BTT). Bah, away to pub, where I will be ensured of a non-captive audience and will be completely ignored.

  17. All this talk of Sammi and Yogi has resulted in a wee bit of cognative recall regarding the latter.

Many years ago we were all on holiday in Donegal as a family but my Dad wasn’t enjoying it, it was in the close season.

When I enquired with my mother as to why he was upset, she replied “it’s Big Yogi” Apparently Big Yogi had a bit of an upset with Big Jock and was nearly out the door to another club.

Well, a couple of days later we were all having breakfast at the hearth of my Granny’s rangemaster, stone floor and all, when my Dad jumped up and punched the ceiling, so to speak, the way he does when Celtic score, the reason for this outbreak of joy? In the paper he was reading it stated “Big Yogi re-signs for Celtic on a new five year contract” Amazing the memories that are brought back by CQN posts!! Must be all of 45 years.

    handling of their contracts.

PFA Scotland has raised an employment

tribunal claim, which Rangers say is on

behalf of 67 unnamed players, relating to

a failure “to inform and consult”.

The action relates to the transfer of player

contracts between the oldco and newco

Rangers following the sale of the oldco’s

    assets to Charles Green’s consortium.

In addition, three former players Sone

Aluko, Kyle Lafferty and Jamie Ness are
