Tactical call leaves Celtic impotent

819

The big decision of the day was to move Callum McGregor from central mid to left back, leaving Celtic with a Scott Brown – Olivier Ntcham central midfield partnership.  This was the central mid pairing we started the season with, when form was at its poorest for years.  Due to injury, the side changed at halftime at Murrayfield in the League Cup semi-final against Hearts, infusing the season with fresh impetus.  Without that change in October the league table would look significantly different right now.

Jonny Hayes could have started at left back, as he did at Pittodrie on Wednesday, allowing McGregor to partner either Brown or Ntcham, but Brendan Rodgers’ gamble did not pay off and Celtic did not compete throughout the 90 minutes.

We hoped for tactical changes at halftime but injuries to Filip Benkovic and Mikael Lustig limited what the manager was able to do.  Odsonne Edouard replaced Mikey Johnston on the hour, which improved things, especially when Callum McGregor was able to get into the box in support, but Newco had control of the game throughout.  It was a one goal victory that could easily have been four.  Special mention goes to Craig Gordon, who repeatedly got his teammates out of trouble.

Although we got little from James Forrest, Scott Sinclair, Ryan Christie and Mikey Johnstone, we were forward so seldom, it is difficult to be too harsh on any of them.  Dedryck Boyata’s chances of a big money offer next month were not enhanced as he repeatedly mis-controlled and mis-passed.

We had two late chances to equalise, McGregor put the ball in the net but was marginally offside, and Ntcham had a great chance blocked, but a draw would have flattered the champions.

I seldom complain about officiating, but Morelos kicked, punched and stamped on Celtic players off the ball, without caution.  I assume referee John Beaton missed each incident but we should see retrospective action.

Delaney’s – agreed. Keep it simple and, while BR is at it, pin the Sevco News ‘fiddle’ comment on the wall before next game.

Am not holding my breath re the compliance officer but IF Moral-less is banned …..

Celtic should make a formal complaint to the SFA about the multiple incidences this season (and last) of players committing acts of violence against our players not being punished at the time.

We’ve been denied opportunities to play against 10 men more than once as a result.

    Hail hail

  5. Delaney’s Donkey – thanks for the welcome back!! Alfredo needs counselling and a big hug or something. He’s a very angry man. Hunnish in his demeanour. It’s almost as if the requirements of their scouts is to find people who snarl or can at least be turned in to snarling low life by exposure to bigotry. They have had no shortage of that type over the years.

  6. Had a look at the fixtures between now and the split.

Celtic have NINE home games and FOUR away.

They will play away from CP only Three times before Easter.

Given the away form has caused us most concern this should ease any worries.

Should Celtic do proper business in the coming weeks that is a hell of an advantage.

    Celtic have –

Plus whatever the cup brings and all the pretenders play each other and a certain club have 8 away games in that time vs teams around them and/or who have given them problems.

If Celtic do their job in the next few weeks that is a hell of a leg up since away form has been the issue in the early part of the season and of the away games Celtic have won 6-0 and 4-0 at two of the venues. They have scores to settle with Hearts and Kilmarnock away as well.

Those are good fixtures and better than anyone else currently chasing.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

  9. Bhoys, Worth noting – FACTS

Out of contract in 6 months time at Celtic :

    Goalkeeper- De Vries

Right back – Lustig & Gamboa

Centre Half – Boyata & on loan Benkovic

    Left Back – Izaguirre

    Midfield – Brown & Allan

    &

We already know we need 1 possibly 2 Strikers

( do not expect to see Griffiths back anytime soon)

January is not best time to buy, but we need to be building for 2019/20 season Now

Big big January, which didn’t need to be the case had Brendan been supported in Summer

    I will repeat

We need at least 1 first team ready now

    Right back

    Centre Half

    Left back

    And 1 or 2 strikers

For me where we currently find ourselves, doesn’t say a lot for any forward planning ?

    Whose fault ?

Brendan wanted McGinn as long term replacement ( 6 months time ?) for Brown

And Pacinni to replace Lustig in the summer,

    Who did he get ?

Mulumba – who didn’t even make squad yesterday

  14. I watched the highlights on Sportscene with my reluctant youngest Bhoy who didn’t want to go through the pain again. We both felt after watching the highlights that we were definitely the masters of our own downfall and that we made the huns look much better than they really are. A good team would have punished us severely on our display yesterday especially playing at home supported by their baying hordes.

Brendan definitely takes the blame for the team selection but I still firmly believe he would have turned it around in the second half by hooking Ntcham and moving Calmac to midfield but unfortunately the two injuries made that impossible.

Sportscene also highlighted how ineffective Ntcham was and to be honest his lack of movement was shocking! Also if you watch again you will see that Beaton was perfectly sighted for the Morelos kick on Broonie and the stamp on Anthony Ralston – cheating at the highest level. The Club need to call him out on this and shame the FtSFA. Things will never change whilst we sit meekly by and accept this cheating. It’s no wonder that Celtic fans are beginning to suspect complicity within our Club with a rigged game. You might have gotten away with it pre-Internet but I’d like to think there are still enough of us bampots about to call them out.
