Targeting development on the left back slot

365

For decades, some of us have wondered why we have been unable to develop a striker capable of regularly holding down a place in the team. While this remains so, we appear to have the magic formula for developing full backs.

Two months after Kieran Tierney left his 20s behind, Calvin Miller (19) and Anthony Ralston (18) look to have been hued from the same tree as the much-celebrated Tierney. And by the look for the three of them, that tree is oak. There is a physicality to them, which sets them apart from years of scrawny, but skilful, hopefuls.

I know the opposition was only Kilmarnock on Saturday, but Tierney came through a similar school only two years ago, marking his progress at the same staging posts.

Part of this apparent success may be explained by the fact that Miller (and Tierney, for that matter), was not always a full back. Calvin first emerged as a striker, but instead of burning out waiting for his chance there, was reprogrammed as a defender.

Celtic, and much of the world, had a vacancy at left back for years; we were always on the lookout. We targeted this position through the development system, which explains where the success has come from.

We might never be able to produce a top striker, but we have tolerate that if we are able to produce top talents elsewhere on the field.

    Thank You:)

Check out ‘The Blues According Lightnin Hopkins’, movie on YT.

Sublime playing from Lightnin, ‘That Woman called Mary’. Blows me away.

    Truly, Lightnin was a one-off:)

He played midfield last season at Sunderland, he’s not a midfielder. He’s younger, has more caps and has more first team experience than Boyata when we signed him, Dedryck now our number one centre half according to the manager. I’m sure the current management team could turn Denayer into a £10m + defender.

Its possible that Coetzee wont be our only centre half signing this window, especially if Sviatchenko goes back to Denmark. Coetzee one for the future (like Eboue) and will be given time to settle in.

  3. The invincibles want to win them all. Celtic are in Kazakstan to be winners, heaps of competition in the squad to get game time. Celtic 2-0. Mon the hoops.

Turkeybhoy GoT has been top of their game for seasons now, onto seven in a row, looking for an epic finish to the penultimate season, hail hail

That song’s made for Liam Gallagher. All the while she was singing, I could hear him, “I’m in looov with a German film staaaa, ah woonce met in a baaaa. . .”

Just a lack of references to soonshine and ska-aye, otherwise perfect!

a bit odd = why didn’t the lions come together at that time and play for another team = did they choose celtic, was it chance, was celtic the only team available to them ?

I think Liam has bad memories of German bars. Seem to recall he got a bit mouthy in one,and got a right doing.

  7. Coetzee has 26 caps for South Africa and was his teams player of the year last season. He can’t be far off first team ready.

With him coming in the numbers don’t add up. We have 5 centre backs not counting the fact that KT can play there. I would settle for €3m for Erik if it’s on the table. Ajer may go out on loan again, Aberdeen would have been ideal for him but they already have Christie. He’s too good for the likes of Kilmarnock.

Yeah, mouthy, comes with the territory.

Sure he won’t look back in anger, though!

You’re welcome. Didny want to keep all that to myself, felt I should share ;-)

I didn’t actually mean to be negative, rather I was relishing the experience and the qualities (bravery, defensive fortitude, etc) that this kind of game can bestow our team.

Also we don’t get a lot of practice without the ball in Scotland. I suspect tonight we will.

Someone going to have to break the news to him about Brexit. Poor fella feels European because hes managed in just about every European country, and has lived in some great places, but unlikely to have stayed in any of them long enough for residence. Sure if he wins the World Cup they’ll let him stay in Africa instead!
