Targeting development on the left back slot

365

For decades, some of us have wondered why we have been unable to develop a striker capable of regularly holding down a place in the team. While this remains so, we appear to have the magic formula for developing full backs.

Two months after Kieran Tierney left his 20s behind, Calvin Miller (19) and Anthony Ralston (18) look to have been hued from the same tree as the much-celebrated Tierney. And by the look for the three of them, that tree is oak. There is a physicality to them, which sets them apart from years of scrawny, but skilful, hopefuls.

I know the opposition was only Kilmarnock on Saturday, but Tierney came through a similar school only two years ago, marking his progress at the same staging posts.

Part of this apparent success may be explained by the fact that Miller (and Tierney, for that matter), was not always a full back. Calvin first emerged as a striker, but instead of burning out waiting for his chance there, was reprogrammed as a defender.

Celtic, and much of the world, had a vacancy at left back for years; we were always on the lookout. We targeted this position through the development system, which explains where the success has come from.

We might never be able to produce a top striker, but we have tolerate that if we are able to produce top talents elsewhere on the field.

    Morning Celts

Good day for Celtic. We play like we can, we qualify. We will be there on merit, we never bought our way in.

That is why, Celtic are the finest team in the CL.

    Celtic are the real deal.

We may not have the money of Manc City, PSG, Chelsea, but we have something they will never have. We have the best fans in the world, and the iconic hoops, which i will be wearing today:)

    Celtic are magnificent.

    Cmon bhoys.

    Completely artificial pitch.

This year they had it upgraded from really crap plastic pitch to slightly less crap artificial pitch.

Just watched the ten minute YouTube clip of Rivaldo

Wow,looks like we’ve signed a quarterback. Wi pace and an eye for a tackle.

Said the same myself.stunning eye for a pass. The diagonal passing was pinpoint. Our wide men will love him.

Our scouts are turning up some diamonds. When you look at what the numpties in Englandshire are paying out,we are doing great.

We are now set up to be a club that develops young talent. We have the advantage of giving them first team and European football. We will still sign the odd dud.

  8. No utterings from “The Lunatic Dreyfuss”today. He fairly brightens up my mornings .Maybe working on his cunning plans for Ross County on Sunday.

    The North Remembers.

    MTK .

Celtic prepared for the away game by playing a friendly v Chelsea .. It was abandoned ( second half ? ) due to a Glasgow monsoon . I wasn’t happy — nothing better than a 45 minute walk home through torrential Glasgow rain . Can’t remember the score.

Thanks for the link of that 1964 first leg win.

How much did we get fined by UEFA for those Green Brigaders invading the pitch??

Denayer? The rumour at the weekend was we were after a £5m centre back. Coetzee is £800k and would more than likely be an Eboue type signing, give him time settle into new country etc.

No Waters, but, unlike the original gig, an audience, the first at a performance there since 79 AD when the hungry lion was gladiator!

See your point, but you could say the same about Morrissey and Marr, and I fair enjoyed the three occasions I’ve seen Mozza Smithless.

Get your point about Morrissey, although i think wee johnny’s jangling riffs made the Smiths. As i write this, for some strange reason i want to hear Villanova Junction Blues by Hendrix:)

Astana have nothing to lose now. That makes them very dangerous. They will come at us, looking to get an early goal, to get the crowd up, and plant the seed of doubt in our players heads.

This will be the most difficult game, and situation, this Celtic team has ever been in.

We have to be on it tonight, right from kick off. The pressure will be immense because they are going to come at us, like no team has, since Brendan took the reigns.

If we come through this, it will be a watershed moment, that will bond these Bhoys together, and give us a steel and a confidence that will serve us well in the next stage (or stages?) of this competition.

Brendan of course knows this well.

    COYBIG

  17. G67- Denayer on big money, Inter Milan linked with him , Coetzee in for 800k ,Erik to Copenhagen for £3mil.Brendan used to balancing the books at Swansea and previous.Could be a Man C reserve striker?

Apropos of nothing, I heard this at the weekend, so just to ease any tension…

Whenever I listen to U2, I like to turn down the treble, don’t know why but it just takes The Edge off

  19. TGM

Wee Johnny’s autoboigraphy ( not ghost-written) ‘Set the boy free’ isn’t a bad read, with some really good insights into how he developed his style and the songwriting chemistry he had with Steven Patrick.

Best Mozza gig was the Mayhem at Motherwell Civic, when he attempted to encore with a Smiths song (Shoplifters), which caused a stage invasion, led by a CQN poster fae Wishae, I believe, with a penchant for killer one-liners!

So we didn’t get to hear it, and quite right anaw, it is rock’n’ roll after all!

  20. Really cant believe some of the stuff I am reading on here. Some actually worried about going through.

Dear God,what Celtic team have they been watching for the last year?.

  21. Any time I have seen Denayer play,he has looked a shadow of the guy who played for us.No thanks.

    50 grand a week.Deary me.

That post should have some doom-laden music accompanying it, like the theme from ‘Jaws’ or something!

Johnny liked to tune his guitar up rather than down, i think that accounts for the jangling sound, the Byrds and Teenage Fanclub spring to mind.

Id rather tune down to Eb, more bluesy feel, or open G for some slide.

    Old Skool:)
