Targeting development on the left back slot

365

For decades, some of us have wondered why we have been unable to develop a striker capable of regularly holding down a place in the team. While this remains so, we appear to have the magic formula for developing full backs.

Two months after Kieran Tierney left his 20s behind, Calvin Miller (19) and Anthony Ralston (18) look to have been hued from the same tree as the much-celebrated Tierney. And by the look for the three of them, that tree is oak. There is a physicality to them, which sets them apart from years of scrawny, but skilful, hopefuls.

I know the opposition was only Kilmarnock on Saturday, but Tierney came through a similar school only two years ago, marking his progress at the same staging posts.

Part of this apparent success may be explained by the fact that Miller (and Tierney, for that matter), was not always a full back. Calvin first emerged as a striker, but instead of burning out waiting for his chance there, was reprogrammed as a defender.

Celtic, and much of the world, had a vacancy at left back for years; we were always on the lookout. We targeted this position through the development system, which explains where the success has come from.

We might never be able to produce a top striker, but we have tolerate that if we are able to produce top talents elsewhere on the field.

Heartily agree, when you see the likes of clogger Greig and McKinnon getting into the Scotland team instead of Big Billy and Bobby Murdoch, would be happy to see no Celts in the squad.

Exactly Ian. I’m sure every player wants to enhance his career by playing for his country. Though I’m not sure playing for Scotland is much of an enhancement. Until the SFA is cleared out and there is fairness and transparency I’m not sure many Celtic fans will lose much sleep about Scotland’s football team. Too late for me anyway. Maybe the next generation might be interested.

  3. A Dundee Utd supporting good mate of mine was telling me about something on Twitter/Facebook kind of thing.

The `something` showed a picture of Alan Armstrong in front of the Pointless thingy and underneath was the Dundee FC Emblem.

Looks dull in print but it sounded funny when my mate described it :-)

  4. I like to see Scotland win. A bit like my feelings when my home team the Beano’s win. Then again no to much bothered when either of them get beat. That just about sums it up.

Im worried that if LIVERPOOL get big bucks for their player they will come in big time for K T.

  6. I am only interested in International teams who happen to play good football. I have no allegiance to any country but have a soft spot for Portugal because I have found the people so friendly. I once liked Brazil because of the way they played but, of course, the game has changed now.

    Scotland? No interest.

They will need to sell more than one player to raise enough money to get Kieran to sign for them !

Don’t expect the Scotland selection criteria to change anytime soon. Strachan is as close to being Celtic-minded as you are likely to get, in other words, not very.

Meanwhile the slide into the murky depths of world rankings will continue . I expect Scotland not to qualify from this group and for wee GS to resign shortly thereafter, to be replaced by the likes of Mcleish or another of similar leanings.

  9. The only time that I noticed Calum on Saturday was when he put the ba In the net, although he’s been transformed since the arrival of Brendan.

Anyway, Cellic players don’t look like Cellic players when they play in blue.

Anyway,…..how long until the League reconstruction circus arrives in town ?

    …..off-oot.

  10. Getting nervous over Paddy. The clincher would be to offer him the number 7 shirt, well that;s it — done deal, yeah.

Has anyone seen the Lion King thingy where the wee fellow asks his dad ,”what is defeat” Dad says, don’t know what that is , I’m a Celtic fan

  11. Glibly McShameless: Droichead Átha is on Cloghercelt’s doorstep and it is only a short trip up the road for me so it will be high on my agenda for next summer. TG4 are showing some great highlights from this year’s Fleadh.

    Maybe see you next Summer?

  12. With Nadir Ciftci away to Plymouth on loan, should never have been brought to Celtic , as well as the number 7 being free surely the number 3 is as well as Izzy is gone, I think we can give the number 3 to KT.

  14. I’m getting a bit nervous with all the press coverage about our players. It seems that the following will all be leaving before the end of the month:

    Dembélé (£30M)

    Tierney (£20M)

    Simunovic (£10M)

    Sviatchenko (£3M)

    Armstrong (£6M)

    Rogic (£8M)

I don’t think it’s a problem if Tierney, Simunovic and Sviatchenko go, as the opposition rarely gets near out goal in any case (10 clean sheets in the last 12 competitive games), but we’ll be completely without any creativity if Rogic goes. Mind you, with £77M in the bank from the fees, plus potentially another £45M from our involvement in the CL (total £122M), we can just buy all the other SPL clubs and let ourselves win the league every season, forever.

Neymar’s home debut v Toulouse, if it’s too long you’ll see some outrageous skill from him, and 2 great strikes from Pastore and Kuruzawa from 10:17 on.

Can’t imagine we’ll get to make that choice any time soon!

Would be great to see them match up in the Group stages, though, assuming we get there, or , better yet, in the last 16.

Don’t think wee Jamesie would’ve kept Neymar out of the team.

Regards Paddy R and others- I expect the wheels of industry to begin spinning on Wednesday – as soon as CL qualification and the bucks have been secured in black and white.
