Tax Man cometh, Scottish Gov front after OBA protests

613

I know there’s been widespread criticism of many in the media for not confronting former Rangers EBT beneficiaries, now working alongside ‘proper’ journalists, for not holding ex-players to account for the enormous sums of money diverted from the tax man. I’ve spoken to a few journos who have tried to make headway on this story but been denied comment, access, or even contact details from colleagues.

The defensive line on not discussing this subject was originally “My EBT was legal and is a private finance matter”. This changed last year when these EBTs were found to have broken tax laws at appeal, when the line was changed to “This is a private finance matter which is subject to appeal”.

All fair enough. A consequence of the original legal status and ongoing appeals is that no one has broken ranks on those responsible for imposing this state of affairs on a football club, the tax man, or individual players.

The Daily Record today report HMRC are pursuing players for the payment of tax on EBTs. My understanding is that many (if not all) players received a letter from the “Club” indemnifying them from tax. Watch how quickly you’re told “Not this club, it was the club that died”.

You’re going to need patience for this one, it could have years to run, but I expect ranks will break eventually.

You can read subtext, can’t you? The Times report today that Celtic and the SPFL have written to the Scottish Government telling them to keep their noses out of the running of football clubs. This was after the Government responded to pressure from Celtic to repeal the Offensive Behaviour at Football’ Act by hitting them on a subject they knew would cause conflict with some fan groups.

Push on the Offensive Behaviour Act and watch what happens with the Fan on the Board issue which you enjoy so much but seemed to have lost momentum.

Politics is a dirty business. All this to deflect criticism of an ill-conceived, ineffective, bad law, instead of just repealing it, which will happen as soon as we no longer have a majority government. Anyway, Don’t Blame Me…….

    We`ll have to disagree .

Entryism , in the political sense, is a very powerful tool.

I`ve seen it at play in many sectors which were not overtly political.

Where have communists gone ? Universities .

One wee example……….Uni. N.S.W.recently issued a dictat that Cook`s arrival in Oz be described as an “invasion” not as a discovery.

I have personal experience of lectures in the ( now defunct ) School of Spanish and Latin American studies

And Marxism. Blatantly forcefed young minds with their pro Castro ramblings.

I saw a doorstop featuring a retired drunken Denis Healey laughing and saying ” I was a communist all along.”

Has it gone away ? No way.

    Celtic

Percentage of votes . Dead right. When Mr. Di Paola (?), a representative of the C.T. issued a statement on C.Q.N. , I replied asking a number of questions.

    No response from him.

One question. How many members ?

    No response.

Why not? What did he have to hide?

A divisive organisation which damages Celtic and divides Celtic supporters.

Not to mention the youth league , the Green Brigade.

    Very good post. Thanks.

It highlights to me something that I think has been missing from the Res 12 journey; good communication.

You have outlined that the decision to “adjourn” Res 12 was made ahead of the AGM. That astounds me. I went to that meeting expecting to hear a discussion of the issues. I understand that if it had gone to a vote then it would have been voted down, but I think the way forward would have been different if that had happened.

However, when Morrissey stood up and proposed the adjournment, my reaction was “NO; It is being kicked into the long grass”, and I voted against the adjournment.

Now 2 1/2 years on I find out this had been agreed in advance. That there was a good reason behind the tactic. Why was this not communicated at the time? I’m not saying I agree with the tactic, but finally I understand it.

I asked a couple of weeks back to see what questions had been sent to the SFA by Celtic (the SFA having refused to answer question from Celtic shareholders) and what answers Celtic had received back. I struggle to understand why the questions and answers cannot be shared. I think this is about good communication just as you did at 18.02.

At what point will you Res 12 bhoys give up on the current strategy – Shareholders -> Celtic -> SFA -> UEFA?

Is there a plan B when the you come up against the UEFA brick wall, or is that the end?

I really do admire what is being done and have no idea where the money (or time) is coming from for solicitors etc.

    ==================================

A few months back I asked CQN posters who wanted more info on Res12 background to e mail auldheid046@gmail.com

Those who did were given a document with reasons why it could not be published and each recipient has recognised the need and in many cases were appreciative of the effort preparing it.

E mail me if you want a copy.

There will be no need to give up. Right is might as you will read.

Thanks for addressing the first of my points to brth.

Are you saying that prior to that res 12 AGM that it was explained, either here on cqn or on phil’s blog, that there would be a request to adjourn res 12, and that the reason was explained? I missed that.

Are you able to answer me why the questions to the SFA and their response can’t be shared?

Forgive me if I’ve missed the response previously here or on Phil’s blog. I can’t read everything.

Imagine young minds being twisted to believe that everything they have they earned and deserve because Cook never invaded a country that was not already populated by a race of human beings, there’s your entryism right there.

Everyone who was educated in the UK between 1946 to date is the product of socialism though some prefer to delude themselves that their paid for education was not subsidised by the state and they were born to be the sun king.

    Terje..,

I’m saying that the decision to adjourn was accepted by the board when they understood they did not have all the facts.

I did not say the reasoning was published before the agreement but immediately after the AGM.

The questions and answers to the SFA were also published, obviously you have only recently taken an interest in getting all the information or you’d know that.

Welcome to res12, buckle in its going to be a rough ride.
