Taxpayers do not sponsor lazy gossips

1055

I know what you were thinking; Zenden, like Ljungberg, but older.  We need experience in the squad but with Commons, Ledley, Samaras and McCourt all able to stake a claim for the left midfield position this is the last place we need to bring in a 35-year-old.  Best of luck to the player but I’m pleased he has left Glasgow.

Today’s Sun report that a senior policeman witnessed a crime being committed but instead of doing what he is paid to do, he reported the incident to Uefa.  You have to wonder about the veracity of the crime.  The officer will do well to explain his actions if they amount to anything more than a few lines in a newspaper.

We are all partisan in this city but Justice is blind to such emotions and taxpayers (that’s you and me) do not sponsor lazy gossips.

Best post and summary I have read for ages. I support Celtic because of its inclusive culture, which I have always thought was closer to the culture of Scotland I know and love. Unfortunately Scottish football has been dominated by a section of society that is alien to that culture and has no place here in the 21st century.

  2. gallagher I’ll post as soon as. This is car crash tv with Lou Reed in the driving seat. When they go back to the studio you can see Andrew Marr smirking, clearly relieved he didn’t have to do the interview.

I was at the FAC meeting yesterday and did walk out before Michael McMahon made his contribution.

I get your point about backing down I certainly was not backing down, I attended the meeting with my son and met up with some of his friends. They decided after the racist comments and certain songs being played on mobile ring tones.

In asked my son to stay but he was going with his friends and I was not going to let him go outside without me not knowing who was outside or if they would be attacked. I decided to go with him to at least protect him if anything happened.

Fortuneately there were enough Police outside for us to get to the car, but as we left a number of poice cars with lights on were heading to the scene. it looked to me that the group inside had been texting their friends in the Louden and Bristol as they looked on standby when we passed.

I reminded my son never be intimidated by groups of huns they talk a good game but rarely can back it up when a punch up starts at least 1 of the older huns I have previous with from my younger more Republican days.

I do agree with you but some of left for different reasons that I think you can understand

The players have no liability with regard to HMRC, I doubt they even knew what was happening… their agents however!!!!

The mysterious case of the missing data…

Published on Tuesday 11th October, 2011 by Celtic Trust

The COPFS put us all to shame with their efficient and prompt cleaning operations….

Amidst all the contributions from football fans and others regarding the proposed Offensive Behaviour at Football Bill, one of the consistent themes has been that we don’t need this Bill because we already have legislation (Section 74 (Religious aggravation) offences introduced in 2003) which deals with the issue of sectarianism. Leaving aside the now growing suspicion that it is not sectarianism the Government actually wants to deal with, an obvious response to this is that we should look at the data that we already have and see what that tells us. The Catholic Church in Scotland has been asking for this data for some years now as have a number of distinguished academics such as Professor Tom Devine, the eminent historian. The small tranche of data (about 6 months worth) which was released made interesting reading. It showed that most of these offences (86%) were not commited near or in connection with football; that drink was a factor in most of them; that Catholics were twice as likely to be victims of these offences (even before you take into account the proportion of Catholics in the population which increases the multiple to six times as likely). If the whole data set (2003 to 2011) confirmed these statistics then the Government would need to think very seriously about the extent to which the legislation they were proposing was either necessary or would address the real issues. The admission by the Crown Office Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) that the data from 2005-2009 was destroyed, despite earlier claims that they could not provide it because it would have to be retrieved from a number of separate systems, is explosive and takes the debate way beyond issues around football and into the realm of what one observer describes as ‘government malfeasance’.

This piece of legislation is increasingly looking like the rock on which Alex Salmond will perish. There will, at the very least, be demands for disclosure about who ordered the destruction of this data, when it was destroyed, why misleading answers were given when it was asked for; why up until last weekend was the Justice Committee unaware that this data was gone etc etc

We would encourage all Celtic fans as well as non-Celtic fans who happen to believe in democracy to ask their MSPs to ensure that answers to these questions are given. If you don’t know who your MSP is, you can find it at Who is my MSP?

Sorry if this article has already been posted bhoys but this is another ? that needs answered at a higher level ie constituency..

  7. Gordon Smith who was given a job by Ragers after the takeover but who is seldom seen or heard. The one time he was interviewed on Radio Scotland, he was unconvincing in his attempts to explain his role.

Of course, having him inside the tent might be advisable for Ragers and lucrative for him.

  8. I cant understand why the FAC meeting was held in a loyalist heartland. I get my young son at the weekend and couldnt attend (not an excuse) but when i heard where this meeting was being held an ambush by them sprung into mind and guess i wasnt wrong. Do they not realise this Bill is also directed against them. Hope all who braved the meeting got out ok and by the sound of previous comments the speakers have not helped the cause one bit.

    good post mate.

There are points made in post that I strongly agree with and there are others that I would challenge.

I agree we need unity of purpose and the internal squables are not helpful. However can we really hold back when doing so may appear that we all agree with everything sections of our support are doing in our name. Can thst wait?

The ongoing issue of identity and the expectation/declaration by a vocal group that we are an Irish club who happen to play in Scotland where singing Ra songs is an expression of identity is causing more and more division. Both wihin the club/support and the wider society within the Scottish community.

let me declare right now I support the broad aims of the Irish Republican movement with strong reservations when it comes to terrorism to achieve aims. I am a ballot box rather than armalite man,,fully recognising the argument that the armalite and the bomb dragged the establishement to the negotiating table that paved the way voting rights. I totally ‘get’ that.

I don’t find the songs offensive in any way whatsoever, i know many of the songs and learned some as a young boy at family gatherings. I can play a few on guitar and often lead the singing at a party. In my teens and twenties I sang them at games ..no trip to Europe or away games on our supporters’ bus was complete without the ‘war music’ of the ‘Tones.

What I thought was an acceptable way of declaring my ‘Irish’ background and culture was abruptly halted when Celts played a Euro tie v Shamrock Rovers in Dublin. We were being asked to leave bars for singing ‘war songs’ a lot of local guys were getting quite aggressive about it. I wanted to understand why. I learned that memories were recent and painful. The situation was far more complex than I had realised. I was told that these songs are not sung at GAA or Irish soccer games for that reason. Tho’ I have been in many bars and homes in Ireland since, where they are sung passionately. Usually after some care has been taken to ensure that there is overwhelming consensus in the group to sing the songs..it is not just polite or decent, it is the right thing to do, To consider others.

I came to realise there is more to Irish Culture in song and music than ‘war music’ that a rich tradition exists where respect for others, forgiveness and reconcilitation are qualities highly valued. That the hatred for the cruel hearted monster of England and the Scots who swagger down the Falls road is confined to the elements of the government & establishment who seek to oppress. There is no antipathy towards the majority of the ordinary decent people in those countries, and not to the race in general.

Celtic Park in 2011 has a wide ranging community. It is not exclusively Irish, though I agree the vast majority consider themselves to be of Irish origin. What about the Scots in our support, the ones wirth no Irish heritage, there are huge numbers of them and they, along with the Italian, Polish, Indian, Pakistani, Celtic fans make the club what it is. Inclusive and welsoming and open to all the club of the peoples (sic)

When the non-RA’ Irish songs are sung there is an opportunity for everone to join in. When teh Ra songs are sung that is most definitley not the case. There are silences and an awkwardness that is evident to anyone who has any sense. Songs that

It is time for it to stop. They songs are not racist or sectarian. That does not mean it is right to sing them when we welcome others into our home at Celtic Park.

But PL is in (and has been for YEARS) a no win situation…

It is clearly evident to me that even if Dermot had bought the CL winning side of Barcelona for £1 billion and played them in the SPL I firmly believe WE STILL WOULD BE FACING 4IAR for der hun.

St John Doyle Thanks for responding. I know your concerns. The ‘comments’ and ringtones were obviously deliberate. It also reflected the lack of maturity amongst a group of fairly young boys. It was also bravado and they were nervous too. My own built in radar said ‘no trouble’ but I suspect it’s not infallible. I’m sure their das and the real uglies were well stationed in the Bristol or Louden…………… in case. I’d have preferred to take them on in discussion but we never got there. The joy ripped on their faces as the ‘walkout’ happened was obvious and confirmed (for them) their role as the intimidators in control. IMO.HH

What is it with these dodgy huns and the tax authorities

ABOUT 200 bidders interested in buying controversial businessman Dave King’s 158ha wine estate in the Western Cape will be treated to champagne, cocktails, canapés, caviar, oysters and stunning views of Simonsberg mountain.

The Sunday Times has established that bidders may include billionaire Johann Rupert and banking tycoons Paul Harris and GT Ferreira.

Quoin Rock Winery, an estate worth more than R120-million, was used by King as a private retreat before the taxman slapped him – along with the company he has links to – with a tax arrears bill of more than R2.8-billion.

The estate, on the slopes of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, goes under the hammer on December 10. On the day, the property will boast a huge marquee, ice sculptures and a cello player.

The SA Revenue Service attached the winery in July, claiming it had not submitted returns since 2002 and owed more than R47.3-million in outstanding taxes.

A court order for the provisional winding-up of the winery was granted on July 1 and liquidators instructed Auction Alliance to sell the sprawling property and its contents.

The estate is a former sheep, cattle and fruit farm but today boasts 23ha planted with chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot, pinot noir and pinotage grapes.

Rael Levitt, chief executive of Auction Alliance, said bidders would include some of the wealthiest executives and entrepreneurs in the country. Others will jet in from Singapore, London, Germany, the US and Australia.

“The property befits a billionaire’s choice of location and has been developed to a level where it seems that no expense was spared,” said Levitt.

The Cape Dutch homestead, built by King after he acquired the property in 1998, features five suites around a large central courtyard.

Other assets include chandeliers, Victorian baths, an extensive collection of late 18th-century furniture, and artworks.

The estate has a helipad, an underground cave for business and social gatherings and four private guest cottages.

King has been locked in a legal wrangle with SARS since 2001 when tax officials questioned why he had declared an average income of R800000 a year for the previous 11 years. Following a two-year audit, SARS accused him of owing R900-million.

King said nearly everything he had was owned by a company called Ben Nevis, registered in the Channel Islands. King maintained that he could not be taxed on assets he did not own.

Ben Nevis, owned by Glencoe Trust of which King is a beneficiary, was hit with a tax arrears bill of more than R1.9-billion.
