Teenage Matthews excels on Celtic right

1021

The most interesting point to make about Adam Matthews is that, for another month anyway, he is still a teenager.  You and I have seen enough of these games to know that the occasion has a habit of consuming inexperienced youth but Adam patrolled Celtic’s right with remarkable authority last night.  All the more remarkable considering this was his first game back after injury.

Football business for 2011 is finished and new signing, Swedish international right back, Mikael Lustig (25), is now available for selection.  At 6’3” Mikael has previously played in central defence but Neil Lennon insisted the player was primarily recruited as a right back but, despite the rate Celtic right backs pick up injuries, the need appears greater in central defence.  It’s hard to see Adam Matthews losing the right back berth.

Thanks for posting that. Not the sort of thing I would normallly watch, but Neil really comes across as intelligent and articulate, also brave.

Big regret of mine is that I met him once and he obviously was happy to talk but I was far too drunk to work out what to say to him. It was last August and I wanted to ask him about any more signings, but thought ‘why would he tell me’ and my befuddled brain couldn’t get any words out. We shook hands and as I was desperately trying to put a sentence together and saying nothing, he asked me if I was a Celtic man. Then he said something along the lines of ‘fair play to yourself’ and walked off as I just stood there speechless.

  4. I hope the wrapping paper display last night wasn’t a reference to parcels – the type sent to our manager.

Just back from a very, very, very long journey home.

The Rail and sail turned out to be bus, rail, taxi, sail. Not impressed with that however atleast we sailed which is better than some managed.

I hear Balotelli and Lustig were in Bairds before the game – anyone else hear that?

Disappointed with the quality of our play in the game, there wasnt much on display and whilst being just better than the huns is the bee all and end all, I have higher expectations and aspirations for Cel’ic.

That team we played against last night were woeful, devoid of absolutely anything. Id like to beating crap like that comfortably, I also think the atmosphere would have exloded after a 2nd goal.

Nevermind because the actual bee all and end all is beating them – no matter how.

Also thought the policing was way over the top before the game – they came in to Bar 67 unecessarily 3 times before the game. It antagonises, it creates tension from nothing and really puts everyone at the mercy of 1 idiot saying something giving them the excuse they were desperately looking for to shut the bar down.

Wonder is the harrassment is the same with them – the police pushing everyone from the gallowgate into the town straight after wasnt necessary either.

ki is a very good player and your right that he will get better as he gets older, in that respect youd have to say that applies to a hell of a lot of players at parkhead right now.

for me, ki is possibly has most valuw and would be least missed, but i do think he’ll be going in the summer.

  12. I think Rangers tinfoil display last night was some sort of revenge for Beachball Sunday when we bombarded the Ibrox pitch with beachballs. Haven’t they tried it with toilet rolls, balloons and even potatoes since then.

They are always several steps behind. They are jealous of the recognition we get in UK and abroad for YNWA, The Huddle (players), Just can’t Get Enough, The Huddle (supporters) and for being generally popular and knowing how to turn a football match into an event.

  14. Well just recovered after the trek to Celtic Park and home again.

I haven’t read back but one thing I took from the last few games is that our team have learned how to scrap and win matches. Both the Hearts and the Huns’ games only required one goal to win.

Any team who wants to win championships needs this (you only have to look at Man Utd’s recent run after the derby day bashing) to see how to batten the hatches down with tight wins.

We may have lost a bit of playing style, but that can be turned on when the battle is won in the Spring.

  21. I haven’t had a chance to post on the game yesterday yet so will quickly take the time to congratulate the players and fans for making my trip 300 mile trip to the game extremely enjoyable.

I have to say when I saw the team and line up I was slightly concerned as I would have played one up last night.

Well that concern didn’t last long when I saw how fat Sally decided to put his team out.

For them to come to the spiritual home of football and try to play two up and play aluko inn a 4 man mid is as schoolboy mistake as I’ve seen. Thank you fatty Please play the same system at Orc park next game.

For all the ki and paddy lovers out there I hope you take heed of how to beat the establishment . You bulldoze and claw your way through the middle of the park. The most enjoyable thing about our midfield last night is we done it with players that can offer tempo while doing it.

I’m not going to single out players as I thought we attacked and defended as a unit very well.

Don’t you just love getting up in the morning after beating that lot. I had a great start to the day. Mrs Tictalker bought me a deep tissue massage as part of my Christmas so I headed their first thing. To my joy the masseur told me her and her boyfriend had to turn the t.v off as they were rangers fans. I tried to behave myself and not say anything that would offend her untill she asked if I had and sore points that needed worked on.

WELL I replied …my legs are in bits from bouncing at the game and I think I hurt my shoulder doing a mass huddle :0)

  22. That’s me for the night then chaps. I’m a very happy Celtic supporter. Proud of my team and their young manager and management team and proud that we kept the head as supporters when we were 15 points behind and things were looking dark for us back in early November. Patience is a virtue.

I thought the team played very well last night in atrocious weather conditions (1st half) but stuck to the task. They were unflinching especially in the face of severe provocation during the last 20 minutes when Rangers reverted to thuggish type.

So many good performances from so many young players. You have covered them all already. A special word, however, is due to Georgios Samaras who has often been the whipping boy from so many including myself and often deservedly so. Georgios hasn’t gone and sulked but has taken the opportunity extended to him by Neil and is surely turning into the great player that every Celtic supporter knew that he was capable of becoming.

Georgios – you are a great player. We all know it and we all want you to continue to be that great player so that you can take your place amongst the Celtic greats. We believe in you. Try to believe in yourself.

    Hail! Hail!

  23. Just watched the highlights on bbc.

huns goal was a goal – it happened so quickly however im not how anyone could have possibly seen it, intersting regan has an opinion on it already.

looked from the hightlights as if the huns had more chances which is the opposite from what I recalled of the game.

Ledley goal was better than I could see from the other side of the ground – he was stronger, taller and wanted it more than his marker – well done my friend.

Thought McCullach should have been sent off for his studs high challenge on Kayal – no one else appears to however.

Interesting the bbc highlights never showed the huddle

Ard Macha – were you on the 1530 sailing? if so, im sorry I missed you

  24. I don’t know what the hunz fans display was all about but maybe they just anticipated that their team’s recent form will hand us the title and in the spirit of the season they decided to gift wrap it for us?

We were talking, sorry laughing about that on the taxi/bus/train/taxi/ferry – well it was on one of them – earlier today.

They really genuinely havent a clue do they – they really think that pathetic display annoys us, grates at us and gets to us.

The reality is we laugh at how unimaginative and pathetic it is.

I think you are correct, they never recovered from the beach ball sunday, throwing potatoes onto Celtic Park really showed us where their mentality is at.

However, these reactionary initiatives they have in response to something creative and imaginative we have struck against them initially is what it is.

If I wasnt a tim, id say ‘we are the peepil’.
