The 31% non-takeover attempt

852

Dave King and three fans, Park, Letham and Taylor, have bought 31% of newco Rangers this week, to add to some minor shareholding previously held.  King and the others are not presenting themselves as acting in union, as that would force them to launch a formal takeover bid for all shares in the club.  So get it right, this is not a takeover attempt (cough).

King’s shares were acquired from Artemis and Miton Group, who were not aligned with the Easdales, Mike Ashley, or any onerous contracts, they were shareholders hooked at the IPO in December 2012.

We’ve long urged those who are seeking regime change to buy shares in newco, instead of trying to force it into insolvency, an inappropriate course of action.  The actions this week confirm the view that the current regime are entrenched and only 50% + one share will change anything.

The remaining significant shareholders: Blue Pitch, Margarita, Easdales and Ashley will all have their exit price.  Any one, or all of them, will go if the new investors are prepared to offer enough money – and that is likely to be considerably more than was paid to Artemis and Miton Group.  The figures paid this week are relatively small beer compared to the tens of millions required to keep the financially non-viable entity afloat over the next few years.

King, of course, was non-executive director of Rangers, charged with ensuring good governance at the club which was found to have operated an illegal Discount Option Scheme and illegally paid five players through Employee Benefit Trusts, with others subject to appeal.  He remained a director of the club until a liquidator was appointed to wrap-up its business.

He was also called a “glib and shameless liar” by a judge in South Africa, where he was convicted of tax evasion, so he’s pretty much perfect to take an active role in newco.

Reports suggest that there is not enough money in the business to meet January payroll, so we’ll not have to wait long to see if those currently in control are intent on remaining in control, of if they are prepared to sel-up and walk away.

My hunch – Ashley will not be usurped by people who attempted to put one of his businesses under.  He has the profitable parts of newco Rangers and he’ll do whatever necessary to keep them.  He also strikes me as someone who would be unforgiving in the face of manipulation.

A walk down memory lane:  Fergus McCann offered bought out each member of Celtic’s old regime in 1994, no matter the price, apart from the likes of Kevin Kelly, who declined his cash but offered to vote alongside him.  It cost a lot of money, but it was the right thing to do.

  1. I should also add, I’ve found EL to be supportive of TonyDonnelly posting – this is not the approach of someone who would be fly and post under different names, it’s the approach of someone that sees the benefit of encouraging the idiot point of view as it can easily lead to the win of a debate, as well as encourage such debate and, hopefully, a bit of deeper thinking from those who post and/ or read here.

Pedrocaravanachio, you’re aiming at the wrong target imo. I’d never question EL’s supporting credentials, even if he is Michael Kelly….

    Yes I did!

If you still think they are the same you are playing their game, they are a shadow of themselves “we arra people” nonsense, they cling onto their “walks” which are ever decreasing they are stuck in the 17th century with with their bowler hats & white gloves, Magaret, times are a changing and believe it or not that mob are getting left well behind, I know for a fact they are gone because some of the most arrogant, vile, racist bams don’t even try too make eye contact with me, years ago they used to try and goad me BUT thankfully I was brought up the right way, good night & god bless

  4. WITS,

I’m not saying that, come on.

I do get upset, and take it seriously when it comes to this stage.

I hear you, I’m as bad as what I’m complaining about.

Hopefully my reaction here proves I’m not. We need to welcome all points of view, not pigeon hole posters and/ or people, and have open discussion with such prejudices removed.

But can we do that, if you continue to play devil’s advocate on behalf of west Brits? :))

I agree 100%. However, you’re missing the point. Our beloved custodians want to encourage all that shite and want it back to feather their own pensions.

  6. Another festive day goes by with more lips and feet hurtin’ from all the pettin’ and stampin’.

Celtic refrain from a classless knee-jerk pronouncement to a bout of verbal runs from an angry lesbian and suddenly hair is being torn out, and Peter Lawwell’s under scrutiny by the Witchfinder Generals that populate the blog on days such as this.

These are the days the Hun boards start copying and pasting here and mocking the emotionally fragile Tims chucking the dummies at any official mention of the Walking Deid.

There are one and half million deranged muppets in this country who would identify themselves with Rangers in a sporting/social sense. No matter how reprehensible we know these cretinous underclass to be, that number of hate-filled consumer zombies is called a MARKET.

That is why there will always be somebody interested in propping up/establishing a Hun Club; Because there’s money to be made from that market of maniacs.

That is a fact of Scottish life. What I take from it as a Tim who’s lived through the bleak early 90s and faced oblivion with others who grew up with the passion of jungle and the enormity of task taking on a corrupt establishment-endorsed bloated Ibrox behemoth, is this:

We will never see their likes again. What has become of them has gone beyond my wildest hopes already. Karma has returned their bitterness a thousandfold, cursing them to spend eternity as failed tax-dodging debtors, blunted by financial misappropriation, cast back decades to the brink of extinction without hope of ever being more than a middling semi-efficient business and footballing operation, at the very best, given some enormous financial upheaval and drastic restructuring and downsizing.

For as long as I live they will never be a force again. Those who have nightmares of the 90s must come to realise they were a masquerade, the ultimate straw man of Scottish Football, reaching for the stars without paying a dime for the starship.

Right now Celtic struggle against the financial storms which engulf the markets and general economy, and Celtic are in GOOD shape for a football operation. But explaining that to some is pointless; you only know what you had when it’s gone, and don’t the Huns cast envious angst-ridden glances at us.

We have our own problems to address. Neil Doncaster is not one of them. And I don’t even think Neil Doncaster knew exactly what he was blurting on about; would anyone be surprised if he was being worked from the back?

Rile the Tims? Draw them out? Bless Rangers by the mere association with us?

Why should we recognise a bunch of losers, mentioned by an incompetent imbecile who presides over a league where the ONLY real power is US?

Why should our CEO give any of them the credibility of a response?

To appease some of us who feel the need for definition? At the expense of Celtic’s integrity?

I understand some want him/them slapped down. But it’s not becoming of us any more to get involved in their laughable parochial petulance. With a little thought, a breath, you should be able to see that.

Give them nothing. Let them screech. Let them gasp for breath. Don’t waste our oxygen on them. Or on the K.D.Lang tribute act.

We’ve got a league title to fight for, against another two well-run clubs; something they’ll only dream of for the rest of their miserable days.

  7. Wits and anyone else who subscribes to that position

    Ronny out? Then what?

    What is your plan B?

We are a second rate team in a fourth rate league, so who are these magicians that will knock old ladies over to grab the reins when you get RD out?

    McInnes mibbees.

    McNamara mibbees.

Why would any seriously ambitious coach come to Celtic if they are sacked for trying to instigate change?

Even Mourinho as an apprentice would know that this isn’t the place to be. It’s a career cul-de-sac, not because of the league or the players, but because of the alleged fans who want instant results, immediate transitions, and no excuses.

Time was you could stay in the Celtic job for years if you turned the huns over, now some Celtic fans don’t know how to measure their loyalty…

So, many stay away because we are not playing thems or at least competing with thems for the end of season pot. Are we really so destitute that we can only measure our worth against those we hate the most?

No matter how much some of us detest the OF label, many (and that includes some serial board critics on here) want them back – just so we can stuff them and feel good. I never want to see them back and have enjoyed the hunfree mountain (TET copyright), but they will be back I some form – regardless of LNS/SFA/Uefa.

The cup game against them will be oversubscribed and the next league game at CP will be half empty, so who are the hypocrites and who are the chancers?

    Glamour games attract fans.

Games against close competitors attract fans.

Now that we have a closer league (for the moment), the nervous nellies are howling for some sacrificial offering (Ronny/Peter – step up) because they have lost their nerve, and want to be streets ahead of anyone by Christmas – what a crock of excrement. How insecure are we? How we lack the modicum of faith that the team needs?

    Best supporters my erchie.

Fair weather fans who want it all their way or else their stomp their feet and demand some action to feed their frenzy.

If you are in this only for the trophies, go and support an oligarch/gulf magnate/Indonesian sponsored team – there are many to choose from.

There may be many things wrong with how some fans perceive Celtic, but panicking because we are “technically” top of the league and still in two cup competitions and in Europe after Christmas, IN A RADICAL REBUILDING SEASON – is pathetic.

Address the issues with the way the club has dealt with Sevco directly with those responsible. Address the issues of fan engagement on match day directly with those responsible. Address issues of SFA/SPFL collusion directly with those responsible.

Do not lump all of that together in one big pot and shout RD out to bring back …who?.

The job of managing Celtic is hugely challenging for anyone, but for a young non Scottish/Irish manager who wants to change the culture at Celtic the job is beyond difficult.

    HNY to all Tims.

Why should we worry and discuss in public forum about them when our bored wont.

Plenty going on at parkhead for us to talk about.

Free tickets for the unemployed ?

Anyone know how it went… ? Was a great idea from the club.

  11. Had to disappear there for a few moments. After several days of boozing, my arse decided to punish me by spraying an anti establishment spray all over my reclining chair.

I’ve cleaned it up, thrown the PJs away, and am now sitting on a bit of wet patch, albeit, a fresh smelling one.

I had a witchery lotion purchased from Pets @ Home to stop the dug doing this, as it claims it will stop repeat offending. So I’ve sprayed it on my chair, which is why it’s wet.

I can see how this works now.

    Agreed wholeheartedly !

Not too sure about the National team, I am a Gordon Strachan fan, and don’t care much about Scorland but sort of care where my daughter gets brought up, I always blame the parents the schools only have them for cpl of hours,,, your parents define you, anyway all kidding aside I live Celtic win, lose or draw, if people think I am a happy clapper well I have been called worse, the board mean nothing to me, Celric for me is PaulcStay, Tommy Burns and now Scotty Brown, good night, god bless & take care

  13. BSR @ 12:26,

    “Kris Commons

Couldn’t have predicted such a poor season after last years midfield phenomena. Many contributing factors, not least contractual which may have affected his entire position at the club. ”

KC’s not had much game time either. I don’t buy the CQN posts about his fitness. There’s a possible argument that he lacks the pace that RD is looking for, but not much more than anyone else in the current team. He has definite talent.

I see it as he was always going to be sold this period, along with VVD, to bring in some green go. Izzy as well, which fecks up Stokes role. If it is all fitting in with RD’s plan then fair enough, but it isn’t, is it.

FFM, please tell me this never happened to Grace Kelly, cos that would ruin the rest of my life.

Tell me it didnay happen to her.

  20. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

FFM, add Tommy Boyd to that list. I saw him play golf last year in a very nip and tuck match. He was wearing light trousers and he didn’t look soiled at the end, even if his arse was twitching just a we bit.

Our very own kikinthenakas made certain his nappy was well fitted before we tee’d off.

    Tommy, if you’re luking>……………………………….here’s a finger .I.

Happy new year capn boyd BTW.

  21. ACGR,

I’m not too worried about Grace Kelly amigo – it happened to Ingrid Bergman (my adorable heroine), Marilyn, Bette, Jane, what throws me is that it happened to me and you don’t want to know more about that?

This has been difficult for me. I’m an important person. Do you know how long it takes to clean up a human bowel failure??

  22. ACGR,

:))) Tommy Boyd. Wouldn’t matter to me what accidents he has/ had – made the 90s enjoyable, a hun skelper during hun fake domination, one of the ones that had the skill to make the Peter Grants do what they do – a legend in my mind, along with TB and Paul. Seriously, he should know that. Some folk suit wearing the Celtic strip.
